My Beef with Somali Restaurants!
two people do all the cooking, taking orders, and cleaning (so be prepared to wait)
Most of them don't have menus and if they do, not all of the things on the menu are avialable.
It takes too long to wait for food and the waiter ignores you (but you don't have to tip them)
Tableware is available at some restaurants but not all of them offer
the drinks(orange, mango, watermelon) are cheap chemical mix that are bitter or sour (not real fruit juices)
They don't have appetizers before the meal (except soup) or deserts after the meal
Most restaurants staff can't speak good english and aren't open to non-Somalis
most of them have dirty bathrooms
Most of them don't carter to upper-class customers, so if you think about bringing your manager or holding a bussiness meeting you will be disappointed
Most of them are located in ghetto parts of the city
Most staff/waiters aren't wearing uniform or name tag (so you can't tell a waiter from a customer).
Most of them are suited for single men but if you have a family party and bring children, wife etc, will have difficult to find a table.
Aside from this the food is great.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The irony is that, most Somalis like this kind of home-like, informal atmosphere. they don't like to be served with a menu by a professional uniformed staff with a name tag that smiles at them and gives them a check and expects a tip at the end of the meal and be charged with $50, that will make us uncomfortable.
they like to walk in any time and call the guy out to serve him a mix of pasto and bariis with moos. and then leave all the left over and trash at his table and pay $6-$8.
