You have to think rationally but its hard to expect that from a woman. There is simply no evidence to suggest the husband has not provided for this family nor is their evidence to suggest neglect. This is a case of mental breakdown, no co relation.

NPR just reported that they were on public assistance and lived in public housing and that the husband returned to Africa to marry a second wife.

Furthermore, they just reported that she had a history of post-partum depression and this isn't the first time she's done something "crazy" Neighbors report seeing the kids outside most of the time and knocking on their door for what seemed hours at times. One neighbor reported noticing the dead girl seeming very malnourished and looking around with googly eyes at her surroundings days before the incident. This woman should've received psychiatric treatment a long time ago, but she didn't. There were signs everywhere and people just ignored it.

To summarize this unforgivable crime that maybe the first of its kind in the history of the somali ppl

1-A taxiile by the name of Burhaan goes to Africa to marry a number 2
2-The wife with unknown conditions likely gets more depressed from the news
3-She neglects herself and her children, eventually locking them up in a closet until 2 of them died from suffocation

THe story is damning of the behavior of Taxiile somali men, who have been doing nothing short of neglecting their families to spend most of their lives in the airport to collect as much as they can, only to go to Africa and marry a young lady.

This story would hopefully shed light on this tragic behavior, were young women are at the mercy of hungary wolfes.

Either way you look at it, its a tragedy. Specially for the remaining kids who had to experience it and whose lives have been turned upside down by this.

This incident should also serve as a reminder that mental illnesses are rampant in our community, specially depression & its many variances. We're quicker in to believe "jealousy", "demonic possessions" and such nonsense than believing what is real. Postpartum depression is classified as a mental & medical illness, and is one of the first things a postpartum female patient is asked both by her primary care physician after partum and if she ever visits the emergency department. It is part of a series of health screening questions that the medical community in the U.S. has made mandatory to ask. And there is treatment for it.

The most widely known study of postpartum depression of Somali women was done by Harborview hospital and University of Washington a few years ago.

They found 1/3 Somali women to suffer from it, but it was never discussed and the women themselves denied being sufferers.
