‘Come to Mogadishu’ Somali PM tells UN
International staff unlikely to comply with PM Mohamed's request

Mogadishu is now safe enough and the United Nations should move its offices and staff who work on Somalia into the country within 90-days, said Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.
Mohamed made the demand at a press conference in the war-torn capital where his UN-backed Transitional Federal Government, supported by African Union soldiers, is battling Islamist insurgents with links to al-Qaeda.
“We call on UN aid agencies to move their offices and staff members involved in operations to assist Somalia to Mogadishu, and I ask for this relocation to happen within 90 days from today,” he said.
“We know that a lot of money is spent at offices in Nairobi and people claim they cannot go and operate in Somalia but I say that Somalia is not worse than Iraq and Afghanistan, where UN agencies are active on the ground,” said the PM who gave up a teaching job in Buffalo, New York, when he accepted President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed’s invitation to take office in October.
The UN workers are unlikely to move. Life in Nairobi is comfortable, safe and well-paid, with benefits including tax-free cars, generous housing allowances, school fees for children and so on.
Many of the UN staff working on Somalia never visit the country, or if they do it is only to the safer semi-autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland leading some to question how you can rebuild a country you have never seen.
But as one UN worker on Somalia explained to GlobalPost, “If the UN insisted that all of us working on Somalia had to work in Somalia most of us would quit immediately.”

Indho adayg, who in the world needs these leeches leeching off the money they beg on Somalia's behalf? But as one UN worker on Somalia explained to GlobalPost, “If the UN insisted that all of us working on Somalia had to work in Somalia most of us would quit immediately.”
The armed warlords are gone, now it is time to tackle these political warlords who think Somalia is some kind of colony to personally enrich themselves from.

It is very encouraging that Farmaajo has given them an ultimatum and I hope he follows up with it. Many people will be against this decision because they stand to lose out. I know a guy that left Minnesota in 2008 to work with a certain UN organization as a regional rep in Somalia and the man today owns 12 Villas in Nairobi, do you think these people will give up without a fight?Voltage wrote:Indho adayg, who in the world needs these leeches leeching off the money they beg on Somalia's behalf? But as one UN worker on Somalia explained to GlobalPost, “If the UN insisted that all of us working on Somalia had to work in Somalia most of us would quit immediately.”

Xamud,
No they are not. They are cashing out on the money meant for the Somali people. Anyone who's ever went to Nairobi will tell you how the game is played. It's so immoral, it will make you question humanity.

right on the money, and if those foreign workers quit their jobs then their jobs will hopefully go to somali nationals.however,Farmaajo has to do more than pounding on the table.he has to outline a clear plan of how he gonna provide security for those workers, and UN offices.“We know that a lot of money is spent at offices in Nairobi and people claim they cannot go and operate in Somalia but I say that Somalia is not worse than Iraq and Afghanistan, where UN agencies are active on the ground,” said the PM who gave up a teaching job in Buffalo, New York, when he accepted President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed’s invitation to take office in October.
p.s:UNDP somalia overhead operating costs can be as high as 50% sometimes, thus the money get wasted on the unnecessary travel and lodging for those junior field officer.the relocation will actually save that money and allow it to be invest right into the somali people.

Why would anyone need 12 villas..that sounds a little exorbitant. And it is not about fight or not, either go to Somalia or leave and allow someone who will take your position. I know a Somali doctor working for the UN was told to go to Xuddur. After some deliberation, he decided not to and was replaced by a Peruvian who did. Simple as that.RovingMadness wrote:

Gedo_Girl who works for the UN told us she was disgusted beyond the world and actually got out of the field due to the corruption and level of inhumanity shown by these leeches.RovingMadness wrote:Xamud,

Imagine the amount of progress they could achieve with the money that`s being poured into Kenya and in the pockets of greedy workers. Life would be a bit easier for a lot of people. But this weak government needs to supervise the funds and how its used, otherwise it will end up in the wrong hands.

There is more than enough land in Mogadishu to create a Green-Zone. There is an arch extending from the port in Abdi-Aziz all the way up in Dharkenley compromising some of the biggest districts in Mogadishu. For the past year till now, a huge construction project has been going out around the Airport area and some speculate that this might be the HQ of the UN and other International offices.gurey25 wrote:imagine what could be done from the money currently spent in nairobi byt he UN staff?

The government's position should be that if Mogadishu is good enough for the Somali government personnel then it should be good enough for the UN agencies.

UN officers are way too comfortable where they are. They've completely lost sight of the objective of their existence. So this is a very good move from the PM. Lakin what is he going to do 90 days after the ultimatum if nothing materialises? Can the TFG refuse to accept the help...actually what help? What do UNDP and other UN organisations technically do that we would be so miserable without?
