Anderson Cooper & Sanjay Gupta 1 hour cover on Somalia
CBS and ABC were the first American stations to send reporters to the famine but they cover about 5 minutes for the network shows. CNN is the first cable news channel to send reporters to Somalia and is devoting one hour prime time coverage tonight on AC360 with Anderson Cooper and Sanjay Gupta there right now. This is amazing attention for Somalia especially considering the simultaneous events competing for attention right now in the US. CNN International had that lady reporter there for a week now, but CNN US hardly talked about Somalia famine until this

the reason for the coverage is simple, there is an international response to the al shabab clandenistinely going on,unknown to you, frenc and us jets from aircraft carries have been bombing kebabs for a week, kenyan army forces and helicopters have been spotted in south somalia dif district, the media coverage is just a preceed to the huge anti al qaeda operation taking place.

They always said where CNN goes, US foreign policy goes. Let's hope this is the beginning of active re-engagement in Somalia by the US. CNN seems to have a mandate to reignite public awareness on the Somalia issue.

This will lead to a few million more aid dollars/donations. But the military engagement that's needed will never happen.

You need US troops on the ground again. But that's not possibleVoltage wrote:They always said where CNN goes, US foreign policy goes. Let's hope this is the beginning of active re-engagement in Somalia by the US. CNN seems to have a mandate to reignite public awareness on the Somalia issue.

Re: Anderson Cooper & Sanjay Gupta 1 hour cover on Somalia
I am not talking about US ground troops and frankly even I who favor foreign military intervention outside of Ethiopia realize US ground troops are counter-productive. US military involvement complicates for Somalia, for US, for world and for the continued appetite to be involved in Somalia. US foreign policy turning towards Somalia is beyond troops. It is about making Somalia a priority in foreign policy, aid, support to AMISOM, and political and economic push into the country.

They're reporting from Dadaab which is in the NFD, Kenya. But I just heard him say they'll be reporting from Mogadishu tomorrow.
