I agree with union. There are better methods of teaching, but I don't see much wrong with a ruler or belt across the palm, given a valid reason. Specifically ill behaviour and refusal to learn lessons, not the inability. That distinction needs to be made. Most macallins do not focus on methods of memorization, proper pronunciation, etiquette, nor understanding, but simply on drilling Qur'an into a child's mind like Buddhist mantras. For years I had no idea what I was reading, until I decided to pick up an English translation on my own. The same goes for the environment in which you are taught the Qur'an, since I feel it will have an impact on your appreciation of it. Although dingy basements and backrooms are all that the diaspora can come up with, for now.
Even with all that, I also agree with yung's comment. I don't regret a single cable cord or plastic hanger.
Lol @ key. You don't come off as a teacher's pet.

Never had that misfortune in dugsi. Macalinka only pissed me off when he wont stop preaching abt boys being able to do anything while girls were either to be followed or remained home. U dont preach that to a ten year old on regular basis. That had me quit dugsi.

Stimulating post Union.
When I stepped out of line in the madrassah I went to many light years ago my teacher, a Pakistani women, kept me behind after class and, taking my thirteen inch ladypoker out of my pants, stuck it in her mouth.
No, I'm kidding. But that's what I used to tell my classmates and what finally got me thrown out of the dugsi. Good riddance. That place ruined my spirituality.

People should know it was and still is the the lack of financial means that forced teachers and parents to rent a small apartment/house and bring kids to learn Islam. In well-to-do Muslim countries, it is the normal schools that teaches the deen, and the teachers receive sufficient income from the state, wealthy muslims, or Muslim charities. For instance, Al-Haramein was funding many Quranic teaching schools in Somalia before it was bannned by the USA government, and in those days many of the Maclimiin dugsi in Somalia was sufficiently paid.
Fyi, this is an Islam bashing thread, so people should it understand in that prespective.

I went to a proper Mosque, multi cultural and a home away from home for most of us, one we still go to. We never had any of this otherwise other parents would call the police. I am sorry you had to go through that as a kid, you guys have had crazy dugsi experiences.
Re: Why are duugsi's so unpleasant?
I've undergone that punishment many times, not at dugsi; at middle school. At dugsi, punishment usually involved the palms being hit with a long stick. My dugsi's structure was similar to this one:Perfect_Order wrote:I remember this one punishment where dhegaha la qabsanayo, while standing you had to put your arms around and through your legs and grab your ears. And this could last from 5mins to 10 to 20 to even an hour![]()

I also studied with similar wooden tablets. I do not have any negative memories.

i was strange as a child, i was very calm and collected, always cheerfull and full of fun but i would lose it sometimes and go into an extremely violent
fit..
One of my earliest memories is being hit with a stick by a dugsi teacher, i was in shock for something like a minute or 2 , and then
attacked and severly beat up my teacher, who was an old man.
i was 11.
ive never been to another dugsi since, and i was called shaitaan by the other kids and some of their parents.
years later i memorized a good portion of the quran on my own, and Islamic studies was one of my favorite subjects..

Dugsi wasnt all bad, to be honest. When I was 10 n finished Juz Camma, our teacher put together a little party. All the other students who were also done and I, got these fancy golden printed green Kitaabs (even if it meant we werent fully finished with the Qur'an), xalwo & buskut was served, and our parents were invited to come see us. One of my proudest days to date.

Re: Why are duugsi's so unpleasant?
there are no set punishment for all dugsiyaal across the world, so your question has a false premise. I don't know what your dugsi was like but it sounds horrible and not like a dugsi at all.
i agree violence does exist in some dugsi and it is not great for the children, but to get 8-12 year old to read fluently and memorise ancient text of another language is hard work, it takes sweat, blood and tears, much harder than learning to play piano.
i wonder if the new generation of Somalis born in the west or grew up here from the age of 10 or younger would send their children to dugsi.

Re: Why are duugsi's so unpleasant?
Man I miss dugsi, I need to go back or something. Most of the kids who got hit deserved it. Been to many different dugsi's and for some reason Somali children are crazier than most other children, and thus their teachers are more strict than others.
I think dugsi needs both aspects, just teaching kids to memorize the Quran isn't nearly enough.
In one dugsi i went to we had a Iraqi teacher who used to come every other week and teach us about diin in English. From the sirah of the prophet to a bunch of other things. That was my favorite part of dugsi. When we got older the maclin used to teach us out of riyadus saliheen about prayer, fasting and other topics.BlackVelvet wrote:Cramming verses without understanding the meaning is kinda weird to be honest. Duksi should be a place where children are taught about religion and not to just cram things they don't even understand. How many people read As-Shams like it's a song? HA...HA....HA. To this day it feels wrong reading it in any other way![]()
