And I just wanted to say kheyr Allah ha siiyo to all my dugsi teachers. I am truly greatful for all of them. Some of them have passed away, Allah jano ha ku waraabiyo.

One of my earliest memories is being hit with a stick by a dugsi teacher, i was in shock for something like a minute or 2 , and then
attacked and severly beat up my teacher, who was an old man.
i was 11.
.
This is the typical somali duugsi experience.

You are an amusing person.WiglessBidaar wrote:Stimulating post Union.
When I stepped out of line in the madrassah I went to many light years ago my teacher, a Pakistani women, kept me behind after class and, taking my thirteen inch ladypoker out of my pants, stuck it in her mouth.
No, I'm kidding. But that's what I used to tell my classmates and what finally got me thrown out of the dugsi. Good riddance. That place ruined my spirituality.

The thread was directed at Somali duugsi's.gedo_gurl wrote:I went to a proper Mosque, multi cultural and a home away from home for most of us, one we still go to. We never had any of this otherwise other parents would call the police. I am sorry you had to go through that as a kid, you guys have had crazy dugsi experiences.
I agree that weekend religious classes by other communities are much more civilized. Kids actually look forward to going to those. But going to a somali duugsi was a dreadful experience, one that ruined your weekend prospects.

Looks like they're doing duugsi classes inside a coal mine.arabmtu wrote:I've undergone that punishment many times, not at dugsi; at middle school. I also studied with similar wooden tablets. I do not have any negative memories.

I'm not talking about dugsiyaal across the world. I'm talking about the culture of violence inside somali duugsi's, which is predominant. It's an exception to find a somali duugsi that doesn't use unregulated violence, even in the west.Adali wrote:there are no set punishment for all dugsiyaal across the world, so your question has a false premise. I don't know what your dugsi was like but it sounds horrible and not like a dugsi at all.
i agree violence does exist in some dugsi and it is not great for the children, but to get 8-12 year old to read fluently and memorise ancient text of another language is hard work, it takes sweat, blood and tears, much harder than learning to play piano.
i wonder if the new generation of Somalis born in the west or grew up here from the age of 10 or younger would send their children to dugsi.

I don't have a hatred for religion.Twist wrote:I am curious, is this where your hatred for Islam started from?
I just think religion should be a benign, positive framework in which people live their lives.
I oppose people who seek to pervert religion to make it overbearing and oppressive.

eye opening thread
we should make dua for our teachers, because i have come across so many somalis who became lost in life because they werent raised with going to dugsi and stuff. xitaa ilmaha qaarkood waa iska macangag ama damiin oo quraankii kumaysan dadaali jirin laakin edeb bay yeelanayaan, and edebta iyo akhlaaqda is the most important thing oo caruurta ey baran karaan

Hmm... this reminded of ramshackle dugsi that barely provided shelter from the elements, Loox and Khad made from grounded charcoal mixed with milk or water. My Macalin must've been Ghandian pacifist 'cause he never raised his hand against anyone.

My childhood passed in solitude, my best years spent under the gentle and protective guardianship of my helicopter parents, which so refined the groundwork of my character that I could never overcome my intense distaste for the brutish nature of somali duugsi.Advo wrote:Youll sound cadaan, before i dropped out of dugsi i use take my beatings like a bowse and kept it moving. Then i completely left dugsi without the consent of my parents, then a year later my dad followed me to the park and busted me lol....i miss using dugsi tuition for personal needs.
