Wars in general cause mental health disorders, most common ones being post-traumatic stress disorder and prolonged combat stress disorder. Both ultimately lead to depression and other mood disorders. But, Somalia never really had a system of diagnosis for mental health disorders to start with, so the population always had swaths of both cognitive & mood disorders that went undiagnosed. The war's impact on such groups is unknown. However, going by what has been researched & shown -- wars do cause both physical and psychological stressors to civilian populations as well as soldiers. These stressors can be direct result of actual combat, from transitioning, or during adjustment periods after fleeing conflict. PTSD has been shown to plague war survivors for years, sometimes for much of their lives. Often times manifesting as clinical depression or even manic depression. With individuals living in virtual fear & uncertainty, adjustment problems to new environments, distrust of new governments/law & order, sleeping troubles, psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, etc. Even physical health of such individuals has been shown to be affected, with war survivors having higher than normal risks for heart attacks, hypertension and suppressed immune system. The human brain often struggles to conceal the ugliness of war from affecting the person, but because of the level of trauma involved -- it doesn't always succeed at it. Of course the effects vary across age groups & the intensity of the traumas.
