What is a 'Comfortable' Salary for you?

Assuming you've finished all of your education (I still have 3 more years to go), how much do you feel like you need to make in order to live a comfortable life? What is your desired salary? How much do you want to be making 5 years from now?

I think 45K-57k is enough for me. My parents raised a whole family on half of that. I haven't internalized conspicuous consumptive values. I don't need a huge house and a fancy car. I don't want to be that person who's so insecure about their social standing that they have to compensate to keep up. I'm proud of my working class roots. Also, the work I want to do isn't in business, IT or engineering; it's in my values.

I didn't have to worry about money growing up, Alhamdulilah. Got my first job when I was 20. Paid my first bill at 21. I've had a comfortable upbringing and didn't experience the strain my parents did.

You know, it depends on a lot of things (i.e. location, whether or not I'll be given generous maternity paid leave). I will also need to learn how to negotiate my salary. That's in the future, InshAllah. For now, I'm focusing on identity capital, establishing who I am and what I want and networking.

If you love your job and what you do Vs feeling stuck with it, the difference can be tremendous. Even if you make stupefying amount of money and you aren't happy, money becomes worthless.

Very true. I want to live a life filled with meaning. I want to wake up every morning and know I'm making a difference. I want to be someone's inspiration. Don't get me wrong. I want to have a stable and family-friendly career. I don't have to make a lot of money, but I need my job to be family-friendly.

To answer your question, I will reciprocate my family's sacrifices by being the most morally upright, confident, and driven woman I can possibly be. I will involve them in every decision I make. I will always seek their approval. I will always need their support and guidance. I will take care of them when they reach old age. I think the best way to repay your parents is to do better than they did. That's what they ultimately want.
