Army Or Marines

Post by AbdiWahab252 »

I got a delinquent nephew who has taken a turn for the worse. With the end of the Iraq and Afghan war and to make him into a tougher more disciplined young man, I am trying to convince him to join the military. It will give him structure. He will get his ass kicked and go through hell which will discipline. In addition, with no major wars in the future & dismal economic opportunities for young people, the military seems like a great place. After all, you get a nice pension after 20 years of service.

The Marines seem to be the bad asses. The training is tougher, a smaller group and grueling experiences. My friend who joined up just when I was heading to university is now a high ranking officer and planning to retire with full benefits.

The Army is not bad but I worry that his lack of intellect will have him doing the dumb jobs: truck driving, infantry, etc. His ASVAB score was awful. Yet, the Army is a larger institution with more opportunities.

So any recommendations on how to reform a potential hoodlum before its too late ? Or is it off to the military to set him straight ? I am sure with a first name Ali and being from the land of the Black Hawk Hunters, he will really enjoy it :jawalrus:

Most people I know who joined the armed forces said it was the biggest mistake of their lives

Marines you will comeback as a bread dead Jarhead. Army is easy going to the marines, I know a guy who was functionally illiterate who came out of the army

The kid needs role models who are proactive and hold him accountable. Not no institutionalized servitude

PO,

The US military is a cake walk. I would have thrown him into National Service in a third world country where a volunteer would live off the land, nursing yourself from malaria, being eaten alive by bugs, no electricity, showering ever couple of days.

Saxib, don't try to live the moriyaan life you missed out on through your nephew :snoop:

Just be a good mentor, and make him work toward something.

Abdiwahab - if the only idea you have of him becoming a good person who contributes to the well being of his family and the society at large is to encourage him to pick up a gun and become a foot soldier who takes orders from another man, and fights another man's war, then why not encourage him to join Galmudug forces so he can defend tolka? I am giving you this advice if you see foot soldier as the only solution.

Education. Idle minds are the Devil's playground. If he is studying all the time, he won't have the time to be a delinquent. Take responsibility and don't push him onto the armed forces, they're not gonna take care of him. That's not their job, their job is to make him into fodder for political ambitions. Take him to a doctor or an engineer and show him successful people and what he can achieve through hard-work and discipline.

Jasmine,

Galkacyo is not an option plus he is no longer a minor.

JamStreet,

The Galmudug forces need officers not another dumb ass who can fire a gun. As for joining the US forces, he gets benefits, training, and a nice pension. He can Hussein Caydiid it years down the road if he has abtiyaal like you.

AbdiIsmail,

he has enough mentors what he lacks is motivation and ambition. He is always looking for the short cuts in life and puts more effort into avoiding things than doing them. I will talk to him one more time and if that fails, I will encourage him into the military. At least he will come out of it appreciating civilian life.

PO,

I spent time with the kid when he said he didn't want to go to college. I convinced his mother that was okay. I tried to get him into vocation school to become a plumber or mechanic. He drops out after one semester.

On a second thought, if he is as brain dead as Hussain Aidid then the army is his best option. Hussain Aidid is complete moron who is disgrace to his abtiyaal.

I know two boys who came from the Philippines in their late teens, too late, really, to get caught up in school. One joined the Army and ended up driving and maintaining a car for some general officer in Germany. He worked for a while as a mechanic when he came home, but has now owned his own trucking company for years. The boy who served in the Marines got preferential access to police training when he got out and is a long-time deputy sheriff.

The Army is likely to teach him a skill. Marines is Marines.

The sheriff makes more money.
