Zeila was never ciise and was never ruled by a Somali before sharmarke Ali saalax (1790-1861), after his murder by the French in 1861 aboard a French vessel docked at jida Saudi arabia, the French installed Abu Bakr Pasha a Cafaar. Before Sharmarke Zeila was ruled by foreigners Maxamed Al Bardi was one later defeated by Sharmarke around the 1840 all the way to Sacaaid Diin himself a contemporary of sheikh Isxaaq who later was killed by the Ethiopian King around mid 1300s, buried in the island in a white tomb thus the name of the island.

The population of the town was a mix of Somali, Adari, Arabs, Jews and Greeks and some Turks and Cafaar, all mixed adopting a dialect and unique culture and the Zeila dance, the Pearl diving ancient songs in unintelligible now with the death of the Zeila dialect.

Don't listen to the Ciise and Gedabursi recent factious claim.
