Somali tribes and politics

Post by Estranged »

So.. What's the deal? Which tribes are hostile to each other and why?

What I know..

There was a dictator; he was overthrown and people fought over who should become the next leader. Next thing you know it's a war between tribes (or was it so since the start?).

Isaaq vs Hawiye

Darod vs Isaaq

Hawiye vs Darod

Hawiye vs Hawiye

(Btw, I self-taught myself some of the tribes, my mum's an anti-tribalist because of the war).

Who fought who and why? And what role did the smaller tribes and minority groups play?

Thanks to anyone who takes their time out to explain it to me. :)

PS: I'm obviously against tribal animosity but still want to know what happened and how it affects our relations today.

With all these problems, they're still concerned whether they should take ogaden (see ethio thread) or not. Not sure why they would put this as their fitst priority? :?

^ technically everyone has fought. even with in tribes it broke down to sub vs sub.
for example majeerteen has killed dhulbahante and had incured into their land in the sool region before somaliland became powerful enough to lay claim to all of sool and sanaag. you see even the harti's killed each other over politics, in somaliland they say siyaasadu maaha wax saxlan meaning politics is'nt a easy thing, people will kill their own mothers for a seat

Isn't Ogaden colonised by Ethiopia? It's a part of Somalia so I can understand why it is a 'priority' for many of us. Besides, I heard the Somalis in Ogaden are heavily oppressed by the Ethiopians. Because of this I support the sentiment (to free Ogaden). Even for Islamic reasons (to free a Muslim land from Non-Muslims).

So it was everyone killing everyone? I thought there were sworn enemies, allys, neutral tribes etc. :/

the sworn enemies are usually those that border each other. isaaq and darood are the only two that can fit in to this category. but even then it will be sub clans of each these two rival tribes that experiance conflict. for example cidagale and ogaden in the hawd, hy and ogaden in the hawd. hj and dhulos in the east, hy vs dhulos in the east, hy vs warsangeli in the east. these are all historical events though and isaaq and darood intermarry heavily. sacad muuse vs gadabiirsi in the western part of somaliland etc etc
in terms of allies hawiye and isaaq allied in the 80's against darood which lead to the end of the siyad barre regime but isaaq ended that alliance when the caydiid militia decided to act on its own in certain places in the south with out sharing information or decision making with the snm in the north.
and neutral tribes are the powerless ones, in the horn of africa if youre not a trouble maker then youre a nobody
