[Well which group, other than themselves, would al-Qaeda not consider to be apostates or kaffirs, if they ended up on conflict with them?]

How about Hamas, Taliban, ICU, Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, Pakistani Islamist parties, Kashmiri insurgency and many others?

In other words only other Salafis. Just about everyone else on the planet is not Salafi.

James Dahl,

What Salafists are you talking about? No Muslim can claim to be Salafi. Muslims can claim to be following the path of the Salafis who died over 1300 years ago.

The only people who call themselves Salafis are a sect produced by the Saudi Monarchy and they are known to most Muslims as "Salafi Jadiid" i.e. "The new Salafis".

This sect is pro-Saudi Arabia & pro-US foreign policies, they support the invasion of Iraq, they support Abdullahi Yusuf's government, etc. They are pacifists and discourage Jihad.

Protestants never called themselves Protestants either, they referred to themselves as "Lutherans" or "Calvinists" or "Evangelicals".
Protestant was a label that other people used to refer to them collectively.

Salafi has become such a term to collectively refer to the new, conservative groups that have emerged in the 20th century in Islam.

What does everyone think of the term "Takfiiri" to describe the Taliban, ICU types?

The reason is that people keep wanting to make a broad label to lump so called "radical islam" into one big category, and seperate it from so called "mainstream islam".

The word they use for the resulting group varies; Wahhabi, Salafi, Takfiri, "al-Qaeda aligned" (even if they're not) etc.

No such thing as a Wahhabi. However, sometimes, you can use the term salafi to differniate and mael a clear distinction that you trying to adhere to the path of the first three generations. It is merely an affirmation of your intention to adhere to the manhaj of the Salaf, it should never replace the title that Allah (SWIT) gave us.

Pay attention to Sheikh-ul Islam ibn Tamiyyah's following statement:

"I do not mind which out of the two blessings was greater. that Allaah guided me to Islaam, or that he kept me away from these innovated sects. By Allah , the Most High, in the Qur'an He called us the Muslims, the Believers and the Worshippers of Allah, so we will not leave the manes which Allah has names us with in favour of names innovated by the people which they call themselves by and also their forefathers for which Allah has send down no proof"

By the way, those who refer to them as 'Salafis' and commit acts that are contrary to the Islamic teachings, is what we call the pseudo-Salafists, who are the ignorant ones that you see on tv with the suicide and car-bombs.

The famous statement of the late Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (RH) in his sharh of 40 ahadeeth:

From his [the Prophet] SAW statement,

"Whoever lives amongst you will see much differing, so adhere to my Sunnah",

It can be learnt that if parties (ahzaab) within the ummah emerge in increasing numbers then one should not affiliate himself to a party (hizb). In the past, many groups have appeared; Khwaarij, Mu'tazilah, Jahmiyyah, Shee'ah, even Raafidah. Then there appeared, later on Ikhwanis, Salafis, Tablighis, and all those like them. Put all of them to one side and take [the path] ahead. Which is what the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallaam guided to, "Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs." No doubt, it is obligatory for all Muslims to adopt the way of the salaf as their madhhab, not affiliation to a specific party (hizb) named, "The Salafis". It is obligatory for the Islamic Ummah to adopt the way of the salaf as-salih as their madhhab, not bigotry to those called "the salafis". Pay attention to the difference: There is the way of the salaf, and there is a party (hizb) called "the salafis".

What is the objective? Following the Salaf. Why? The salafi brothers are the closest sect to that which is right, no doubt, but their problem is the same as others, that some of these sects declare others as being misguided, they declare them to be innovators and as being sinners. We don't censure this, if they deserve it, but we censure handling this bid'ah in this way. It is obligatory for the leaders of these sects to get together and say, "Between us is the book of Allah, and the Sunnah of His messenger, so lets us judge by them and not according to desires, opinions and not according to personalities. Everyone makes mistakes and achieves correctness no matter what he has reached with regards to knowledge and worship. Infallibility is [only] in the religion of Islam."

In this hadeeth the Prophet SAW guided to the way in which a person secures himself. He doesn't affiliate him to any sect, only the way of the salaf as-salih, to the Sunnah of our Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallaam and the rightly guided caliphs."
