I was in Somalia in 2010 and it is like any other any African country despite the lack of strong central government. The people work, run their businesses, nomads look after their livestock, and farmers tend their farms. Due to endless wars, there are many internal displaced persons (IDPs) but overall Somalia is improving. People outweigh peace before any thing else, help the IDPs as much they can, and allow business to flaurish.

If you are heading back, make sure you save around $50,000 USD and you should be able to live in a comfortable life provided you put your money into business wisely and you don't fully commit it into one project. If you can't save that amount of money, make sure you carry yourselves with skills which are in high demand like medical related skills, civil and engineering degrees, geology, and teaching skills. You could do well with these skills.

Your western passports would make easy for you to travel to Dubai and Far East Asia.

The general trend of the country is very good and the people have good hope that the civil war will conclude and strong administration will emerge.

Pray to Allah things will be much better and much easier in the near future and work for common good in your country, reject backward clannism, and help the poor and the IDPs backhome. You know the Hawalas near you.

I would be in Galkayo chilling in my Villa reading a book while dinner is being prepared by my personal cook. Somalia is heaven, and surely where all our futures should be.

street and otherwise smarts would prosper let alone survive.

Qualities of Somali diaspora that many locals lack:
1- work discipline
2- open mindedness
3- drive to succeed
4- ability to speak their minds, even if it is against the norms
5- second language speakers
6- computer skills
7- tolerance
8- diversity
9- corporate loyalty
10- responsibility

I would hire somali expatriates over locals in no time even if the locals have more qualifications on their resumes.

The best winners in Somalia:
Those who went to India, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Malaysia, Kenya, Tanzania, etc and came back with degrees. Almost every doctor, engineer or exec you see in Somalia was educated in these countries. You can succeed in your host country too but all the odds are against you and you need to work your butt off.

I had a dinner with a Polish and Australian ladies and a Kenyan and a Chinese guy the other night, who all agreed, except the Chinese who didn't visit other third world countries that Somalia is much better than many countries they visited in terms of electricity, water, communication, etc. I know all what they saw was Bosaso and Garowe. The only complaints they had was lack of paved roads. The Kenyan admitted we beat Kenya with electricity and water supply.

Somalia is not bad after all.

monk lol - i need a little time bro. I have them with me.

Grandpa come to somalia this summer or the nest to test the waters. Hargeisa, Bosaso and Mogadishu are all interconnected and not as separate as people around here put it. Business, religious and and academic community has no borders. A good example is that the best eye doctor whose clients come from as far as Kismayo and Borame with two offices in Bosaso and Garowe is an expatriate and hails from Caabudwaaq. So you can work or have business in all parts of Somalia.
