There is nothing wrong with trading in livestock or fish or even farming, Somalis need to diversify their economy as much as possible.

The Economist, as well as most of the other "western corporate media", regularly publish fabrications, distortions and outright propaganda.
They work hand in glove with the security/intelligence services to advance their Imperial agendas, Iraqi WMDs and Gadaffi slaughter being a case in point.
SL/PL are shitholes for the majority of their populations, no jobs, schooling, health etc. These tribal fiefdoms will never be able to develop any meaningful economy that can meet the needs of their people.
The economist, like other nefarious western groups/individuals, want to see the formal recognition of these two entities, in order to exploit and pillage Rep Somalia resources.
Did`nt you ever hear the old African saying "beware of white men bearing gifts "

Let me correct you there. You are already biased being anti SL/PL but dont let that make you deny the fact that SL actually does provide free education for its population. Sure, it may not be great and it never boasted that nor are employment rates good. But it does function as a government and provides some services even if basic for its people, whether or not you like them as an entity.original dervish wrote:^^^ Your clearly chatting outta ya backside!

This paragraph of this poorly written hardly researched article was the nail in the coffin for this author. Boasso is nowhere near 1 million people, while Hargesia just cracks the 1 million mark. But with north Somalia recovering somewhat, while the south is mired in famine, one conclusion is inescapable. The Somalia of the past is gone. The southern breadbasket has fallen too far behind. Even though it may slowly be freed from extremist control, Mogadishu will only ever be the capital in name. The country’s economic centre of gravity has shifted to the Arab-facing north. Bossaso has grown from 50,000 to 1m people since 1991. Hargeisa has expanded even faster. The best hope for the south is that some of the dynamism spreads.
Of course. Its also only certain diaspora members who belong to the classes who are making $$$. The poor deluded rank and file who flag wave for their clan enclaves, have zero jobs and zero economic gains to speak of.original dervish wrote:I think most knowledgeable Somalis (those not infected by clan-ism), accept the reality that sl pl and all the other "semi autonomous" regions, will never be economically viable.
A corrupt political class, an inefficient bureaucracy and a well connected business class has grown up around these two entities. They exist only to benefit themselves.
