I explained in detail about the non-native ordinance privileges if you go back to read my last post.

Crazyssomi, you have an audacity to come here and challenge the text, but you don't back up your points sxb. Look at the irrelevant topic you posted there: A biography of the speaker of Somali-land region parliament? c'mon?

Ducaale

I read your post, But gurey is implying that the non native status had some restrictions that the asiatic status didn't have!.

Is it tru that Isaaq wasn't giving the non native status the Harti were given, and that was the cause of their uproar?.

You know what, arinkoo dhan baa guracan, the whole shitt is disgusting!. Africans begging the British for 2nd class status instead of 3rd class status!. Abwaan HabarJeclo ah ( Maxamad Nuur Fadal ) baa gabay ku faanay helitaanka second class status oo xataa qabaailada kale ee Isaaq ku caayay inay third class statuskii iska aqbaleen!. Laughing

Maxamad Nuur Fadal:

Ee ficilka baas iyo hawadu, nala buraanleysay
Barna lama hadhin reer tolkay, baasihii dhacaye

Markay baaxad sooraha gashaad, naga baqoosheene
Markay berisamaadkiyo ahayd, baanisaha tooxan

[Qoute from the article

Lucky,

Harti preceded the Diaspora of Isaq in Kenya. In fact, Herti were tradesmen, activists, land owners inter alia. For instance, the Herti were instrumental in founding the Daarood Ismailia Committee in 1932 and it actually supported the Isaq in its pursuit of this status. “While Darod Ismailia committee initially supported the Isaq in is Asiatic status, it soon gave the impression to be satisfied with a special Somali status "quote]
Gurey, One more clarifications about the colonial ordinances. The one applied to the European did cost 40, Asians paid 30 shilling, Non-Natives (like the Harti) paid 20 , and natives paid 10 shilling. The agitation surfaced after their objections to the Native Authority Ordinance. For Somalis, the ordinance was only made to apply to the Isaqs. Hence, the Non-Native Ordinance had privileges a lot similar to the Asians if not equally, at the same, it offered Hartis their exclusive rights to establish exclusive clubs such as the Darood ismailia Committee, and Darood Welfare Committee.
Ducaale first of all non-native ordanace act applied to all somalis,
not your harti only.
Secondly , you are getting the time line of events jumbled up.
Native ordadance act first came into effect in 1924, and then changed in 1928, the somali issue started back then in the 20 and heated up in the 30's.
Issaaq were among the first somalis in Kenya Proper, and were mostly
merchants and retired soldiers inte KAR regiments.
One could argue that they preceded the harti becuase most of them arrived during the disruptions cased by the MAD Mullah.
Infact retired issaq soldiers in the KAR were given Land in Isiolo.

This was not restricted to kenya only .
I have an uncle who as a 8 year old in 1936 remembers a riot in Dar es Salam
where issaaq clashed with police and destroyed alot of property.
This was started because an isaaq guy was denyed entry to an indian run
shop where the owner had a sign marked " Natives served at the back".
The guy beat up the owner and as others came to help the indian, somalis passerbys got involves and several people arrsested .
These were the conditions of the 30's.

And Mataan yes Asians which meant Indian and Arabs had more rights as to ownership of property and employment.
All somalis were exempt from the ACT but the Isaaq wanted to have the same rights as the Asians.

Another thing i do not understand is why Ducaale talking about the
SYL and nationalism.
What does this have to do with the issue??
The SYL was founded in 1943 in Moqadishu and spread through all somali territories. By that time the Asian status issue was nearly dead,
and Isaaq were giving up and settling for what they already had.

And another Irrelevant thing !
The Ismacilia Club ?? what does that have to do with the issues again.
You dont hear us braging about long extinct political assosiations do we?
For your info the isxaaqiya club was formed in Aden in the 1880s to
form cooperation between isaaq in Yemen.
Could your ismacilia be inspired from that??

First of all Gurey, I am trying to clear up things and how things related to, copied, and developed from one another. I am letting you have an intrinsic view to it. I don't appreciate denigrading my brothers, but i am fighting with the slave mentality and dehumanizing of a self-identity, which is the lowest stage of low self-esteem. I will try to give answers quote by quote.

[quote="gurey25
((Ducaale first of all non-native ordanace act applied to all somalis,
not your harti only.))

Yes it all applied to Somalis, but the Native Ordinance was still applied to the Isaq. You should reread what i wrote , esp from the quote i provided as a source.

((Secondly , you are getting the time line of events jumbled up.
Native ordadance act first came into effect in 1924, and then changed in 1928, the somali issue started back then in the 20 and heated up in the 30's.))

Yes it did start at that period and it came into effect in all over British East Africa. The first rebellion took place in Kismayo since Kismayo and Nairobi used to come under the British Colonial adminstration in East Africa. In fact, two years before the rebellion, A letter written in English was sent to the Chief Native Commissioner from "Somali Daarood" . I am taking this quote from a historical document by Catherine Bestemen. It was in 1922, when first the classification started.

"The government officials who have visited our country know we are descendents from Arabia, and this we have already proved and we can prove we assure you we cannot accept to be equalled and compared with those pagan tribes either with our consent or by force even if the government orders this we cannot comply with, but we prefer death than to be treated equally with these tribes for as the government knows well these are inferior to us and according to our religion they were slaves who were used to trade during the past years"

This letter, in fact, forced the colonial administration to hold Somalis as distinct and a superior group. The Darood in Kismayo who are comprised of Ogaden, Harti, and Mareehaan, objected to the classifications of Somalis into the natives in Kenya and it was they who revolted against it. For instance, Herti uprising in 1893, Ogaden revolts in 1898 and 1901, Marehan resistance in 1913, and Aulihan rebellion in 1916 were engaged in a decisive battle sequentially. These groups claimed indeed to be descendents of Arabs, but they had never contemplated of forgetting their Somalinimo. They fought for their rights and independency and hold with contempt for even the Europeans , let alone Indians.

((Issaaq were among the first somalis in Kenya Proper, and were mostly
merchants and retired soldiers inte KAR regiments.
One could argue that they preceded the harti becuase most of them arrived during the disruptions cased by the MAD Mullah.
Infact retired issaq soldiers in the KAR were given Land in Isiolo.))

Saxib, Somalis first appeared in Kenya and around Tana River around 1860 and they were mostly Darod pastalorists. They conquered the natives and enslaved them. The Herti, by exception, were traders who arrived in Nairobi and East Africa by sea. The Whole EastLeight belonged to a man named Ahmed Dahir Lord, a Warsangeli merchant. He was called Lord by the colony because of his feudal appropriation of property. After Independence , the government expropriated his entire land property and declared as a public property. He later became MP and was the architect of NFD, the North Frontier District. Ever since the advent of Colonialism, Somalis ,esp Darod, were engaged in massive battle with the colony. in 1923, the Senior Commiossioner of British EAst Africa appealed to his governmend and said, "You are dealing with the most advanced brain on the East Coast" .

(((I have an uncle who as a 8 year old in 1936 remembers a riot in Dar es Salam
where issaaq clashed with police and destroyed alot of property.
This was started because an isaaq guy was denyed entry to an indian run
shop where the owner had a sign marked " Natives served at the back".
The guy beat up the owner and as others came to help the indian, somalis passerbys got involves and several people arrsested .
These were the conditions of the 30's.))

This is a typical for Somali identity saxib. We are fierce by nature and don't take belittling insults or segregation easily. This is what Richard Burton said of our people. Somalis are ''fierce and turbulent race of republicans''.

((And Mataan yes Asians which meant Indian and Arabs had more rights as to ownership of property and employment.
All somalis were exempt from the ACT but the Isaaq wanted to have the same rights as the Asians.))

Somalis could own property in Kenya and have their own institutions. Why do you think Darood Ismailia Committe was established? Why do you think Ahmed Daahir Lord had extensive tract of land. He used to collect tax from the natives who grazed in his land and he was allowed to collect tax. Besides, the Non-Native Authority ordinance granted the Somalis to Asiatic Hospital ward , but it was discontinued because Somalis were considered "Alien" or Foreign and after the Indians resented the Isaqs claiming their identity .

((Another thing i do not understand is why Ducaale talking about the
SYL and nationalism.
What does this have to do with the issue??))

You haven't read what i wrote, do you. SYL was a fervor of nationalism and its impact was felt as far as Dara Salaam and further where Soomalis lived. I brought SYL to show how it had an impact on ISAQ to get back to the reality and even bolster their low-steem. It was successful.

Again you fail to understand the issue.
Where does it say on that document that darrod had different rights than the isaaq, in kenya.?
All somalis were treated the same, except for those in the NFD
where the british had little control.

Low self esteem? slavish mentality.
Actually those satisfied with thier role and do not protest and fight for more rights can be said to have low self esteem.

This was a political issue and that is why the Asian or arab status was emphasised rather than somali.
Darood may not have taken thier claims arab orgin seriously but isaaq still do take it very seriously, back then and even now.

You accuse the Isaaq of not bieng nationalistic?
The greatest example of nationalism for the somali cause, was the overwhelming support for unity with the south.
We rushed straight into the union with out thinking about the disadvantages, and sacrificed our own administration.

The union in the 60's must have been the most disastrous union in all of Africa, the consequences of the union can still be seen today unfortunately.
