No, the North Sudanese aren't Coptic. Copts were the descendants of ancient Egyptians who converted to the Orthodox church. Most Copts don't even live in southern Egypt so how can southern Egyptians and northern Sudanese, who are of Nubian descent, be Copts? Sudanese like Omar al Bashir are Nubian mixed with Nilotic, not Coptic. The Copts are the Egyptians who didn't convert to Islam during the Islamic conquest led by amr ibn al as.Itrah wrote:CaliQase wrote:I don't know jack about Genetics, but I don't see how these guys can share a dna.
The North Sudanese are Ancient Egyptians (Copts) mixed with Nilotes.gacankudhiigle wrote:the vast majority of sudanese are culturally arab. it is very possible for omar al bashir and that man to have very similar dna.
Horners are the same thing (see results of Ethiopians & North Sudanese below):

Sudanese Arabs and Nubians are closer to Egyptians, especially Copts than to the South Sudanese. #fact. See plots above.gacankudhiigle wrote:No, the North Sudanese aren't Coptic. first of all, Sudanese "Arabs" are majority cultural Arabs who have minimal Arab DNA. They are Nubians and are the same people as the Nubians of Southern Egypt. Copts typically live in Northern Egypt, around Alexandria. The Christian population of sudan is around 1%, copts have little to do with northern sudanese. also, one of the maps you posted you had all of the distinct ethnic groups of sudan and southern egypt but on the map of ethiopia, you only had them listed as ethiopians when ethiopia has much more distinct ethnic groups than sudan and egypt combined.Itrah wrote:Sudanese Arabs and Nubians are closer to Egyptians, especially Copts than to the South Sudanese. #fact. Those Copts sampled in Sudan are immigrants from Egypt. They are basically Egyptians Copts.gacankudhiigle wrote:first of all, Sudanese "Arabs" are majority cultural Arabs who have minimal Arab DNA. The results based on full genome analysis shows that Sudanese Arabs, Nubians, Horners and the Beja are a mixture between Ancient Egyptians (Copts) and Nilotes.
You can't hide from this simple fact.

this may be true. it is very reasonable that cushitic peoples descend from an admixture of ancient egyptians and nilotic peoples.Itrah wrote:Those Copts sampled in Sudan are immigrants from Egypt. Re: “I’m not black,” they would say, “I’m Somali
We don't even have sufficient (complete) dna samples from the amazingly preserved mummies of Ancient Egypt, so how can we even come to the definitive conclusion that Somalis are mixture between Nilotes and Ancient Egyptians? Mitochondrial DNA helps (from bones and hair), but without nuclear DNA (which is quite hard to harvest from a 1000+ mummies), we're speculating.... a lot. I'm not against the idea, just saying let's not use one study here, another study there, another piece of evidence here and there....and say that we have irrefutable and conclusive facts about everything.
I think these are interesting discussions, but when we start taking them too seriously (like some white people I've met who are convinced Ancient Egyptians were white lol) I think we're treading dangerous waters.

Re: “I’m not black,” they would say, “I’m Somali
Somali-Americans will continue to identify as both Somali And Black because they navigate an unfortunately racialized society; because they are adept enough to understand that police treat them differently from their non-black peers, that teachers treat them differently from their non-black peers, that business owners treat them differently than their non-black peers, that the media treats them differently than their non-black peers, etc etc; and because they are enlightened enough to reject the toxic mainstream narrative against "blacks" that they've inherited. I urge you to consider the mainstream narrative of Islam in the West and reflect on how accurate it is.
Every *African Country*-American should know and remember the name of Amadou Diallo. He did not have the luxury to say to the cops, "I am not black, I am Guinean; therefore, reconsider how you perceive me." Another case is Abner Louima, a Haitian. Familiarize yourself with this gruesome crime committed by police because his black voice was considered worthless.

Healing the AA community also, in a lesser but nonetheless substantial way, heals the Somali-American community. It's tough having dual identities, and I understand your preference that we only embrace our Somalinimo, that we only focus on Somali issues. But I intend on living in America, I will continue to visit Somaliland as much as I can and I will continue to identify as Somali and Black.
Also, I believe most Somali-Americans (raised in America) agree with me, both in real life and on this site. Except Idman, I believe the other forumers agree with that position. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: “I’m not black,” they would say, “I’m Somali
Black is not a race...it is a color because if we were categorize races by skin color then some southeast Asians would be considered black. Some arabs especially Jordanians and Palestinians would be considered white. White and black and Brown aren't races and with that said since when are most Somalis black? Somalis vary in color as opposed to African Americans and other Africans. Some of us have black skin but that is not enough to label us black. We have our own country and our own culture with our own language and customs and we share no history with African Americans...so why should force ourselves to identify with them? We can be in solidarity with them and wish them the best but we don't and should not take their struggles as our own. We have a massive array of our own struggles to tackle and I should add Africans Americans have told me in that past that I am not black. I think it would be foolish of me to share a struggle with those kind of people.
African Americans are where they are because of themselves. They cried and fought for equal rights..what do they have to show for that? I think you folks need to stop resurrecting topics of this nature. We are Africans by continent and Somalis by ethnicity full stop! To be black at least in the American sense means having slave ancestors who picked cotton. Do you have one?
Lastly whoever wrote this article is suffering from an extreme case of insecurity. The author is suggesting that these kids are wrong to claim Somali first before black. The author suggests we should replace claiming Somali with claiming black. Absurd!
As adali said we should identify with ourselves alone.

That's everything I was saying on this forum for months, summarized into one succinct post.

Re: “I’m not black,” they would say, “I’m Somali
This thread reminds me of my recent trip to the doctors. My doctor (who is white) was filling out a form for me and she ticked Asian as my race. (Here in the UK Asian is Pakistani, Indian, Bengali etc) and I had to spend 10 minutes telling her I'm not Asian and that I'm black in the end I just told her I'm from Africa not Asia because she wouldn't accept Somalis as black and said that I did not look black. No white person has ever mistook me for black, growing up the black kids would say I'm not black, my parents tell me I'm not black, so I just don't identify myself as black. And I've never faced black struggles. Only ethnic minority and Muslim struggles never black and I don't see why some Somalis like to claim black struggles as Somali struggles smh.
