Is Somalia better off without government?
Everytime there is a conference, whether reconciliation, establishing a government, nominating a group of losers or any other talks, it just aggravates the volatile situation of the country and someone or some groups undermines the attempts no matter how genuine and honest they may be. It seems that ppl were happy and content under the tenure of the warlorships and lives was going on with no hassle.
We have already showed the world and set a trend that a country can exist, function and actually sustain it's citizens without government and we didin't lose a sleep on that. So, why don't we forget about government if it only exacerbates and mires things for us? Maybe we are created this way.

Well if the southern Somalis set up adminstrations like that of the S/land and puntland ones, and ogadenia and the NFD were some how freed from Ethiopia and Kenya, i think Somalia would be great without a government.

Luggoyo the conferances themselves are the root cause of war.
unless you have a truley somalia and antional peace conferance inside somalia, you will have war.
unless people undertand that thier caln will not be handed power to rule Somalia like a royal family
there will be war.

Small government is beautiful.
Gurey,
you are right. Everyone thinks the President will be like Siyaad and his qabiil will live off the govt like his Marexan.

Yes! I think that is exactly right. So how do you guarantee that no one man or clan can acquire dictatorial powers?

Grant,
Simply by dividing power and having a strong supreme court & parliment to neutralize the power of the Presidency.
Division of power is what is leading to the chaos in Somalia.
The Constitution is clear about the division of power yet the executive branch has effectively grabbed power after Yusuf desposed the Speaker of Parliment Sharif Xasan who was an effective check on the President and the PM.

Small government is a good idea.
Gov't should be in the capital and everyone should do their own thing, I think that's what the TFG is about anyway, but there's hardcore clan nuts that won't tolerate the TFG.

Abdiwahab, when one complains on brutality by MSB I usually turn the other ear cuz it may or may not happen. I'm not one of these guys who worship leaders. But I seriously dispute your claim that Marehan "lived off the Dawlad". I wil swear that Hawiye benefited more economically than Marehan. The two most neglected clans during Siyads reign were Lelkasse and Marehan.

LuqGanane,
Brother, the Marehan lived well off the government. There was a benefit to being Marehan under Siyaad after 1981.
But to be fair, I will criticize the a Hawiye President, Aden Abdulle, who let the Majeerten get a taste of power and corruption under his government. Under his rule, they went nuts until the Jalle put them in their place in 1969.
AW, Fair N Balanced since July 1, 2007.

Re: Is Somalia better off without government?
Sir Lugoyo, we're not talking about a landruiser or a house. We're talking about the things that matter. What did MSB do for Gedo? Cabudwaq? Balanbale? etc. the answer is nothing. Lelkasse and Marehan degans were the most neglected. The one thing Marehan did get plenty of was very high ranking positions in the army, and advanced military training in Russia. The capital police, reb berets were dominated by Marehan, to protect MSB. Other then that, the people that made the most money out of that Dawlad were Hawiye, Majerten and Issaq. Besides, how idiotic is it to say that one qabil was taking all the recourses? If Marehan were milking the recourses of an entire COUNTRY, we would be rich as hell right now. The bottom line is you could question whether MSB was brutal or not, but when it came to distribution of recourses there will never be a more fair head of state for Somalia. Never.
