Somalia: Federal Govt forces and Al Shabaab clash in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU, Somalia - At least seven persons from the opposing sides died when Al Shabaab militants attacked a military base in Araf neighborhood of Mogadishu's Yaqshid district late on Saturday night.
Local reports say that heavily armed Al Shabaab militants targeted the base with rocket propelled grenades leading to a heavy battle that lasted for nearly '30 minutes'.
A spokesman for Federal Government of Somalia said they have repelled a planned Al Shabaab attack.
He told that seven people were killed in the attack but he didn't give further comments on the casualty figures on both sides.
Al Shabaab military operations spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu-Muscab said in a recorded statement that the ambush was part of a series of attacks on Mogadishu military bases.
"Our militants targeted government troops base and killed soldiers and commanders. They have returned to their positions after the operation," he noted.
Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group continues to target soft structures and military and intelligence bases, assassinate government officials and carry out military-style ambushes in broad day-lights, making Mogadishu security situation extremely volatile.

We need to invest in spy networks. The government should actually try and catch them alive and interrogate them. Have them show you who is there leader their safe houses their training camps and all those important positions. This way you can hit their influential leaders and senior commanders. At the moment the government just gets attacked and they repel and sit around till the next attack.

The problem is that all security and military aid is stolen or diverted to clan militias.
The army & police don`t get paid....their budgets are embezzled.
There is no leadership in any ministry in Somalia.
Take the new cabinet...they`ll turn up in their shiny plastic suits, give interviews and photo calls etc.
At the end of the day they will be doing f**k all from their ivory towers in Mogadishu`s green zone.
When was the last time you saw a "general" leading an offensive on Al Shabaab positions,
or the intelligence services infiltrating their networks.
They should be leading by example....not filling their boots.

OD exactly before anything can happen we would need an honest government with a sense of urge to defeat al shabab. I think EU should stop all cash to the gov till they defeat al shabab. alshabab would be chased all the way to NFD, the kukuyo know what to do from there.
Horta what does amison do these days? al shabab are no longer in the capital, they only have small hit and runs once in a while and they target the police or somali soldiers. Amison just stay in their bunkers and do nothing other than transport senior officials. Am hearing they looking to increase their numbers?
Hodan your right. It's not going to happen overnight, but practice makes perfect.
