The Nomadic lifestyle needs to be abandoned.

Post by Lancer »

Folks, I think it's time we realize the current lifestyle of many people back home is not sustainable. These reoccurring droughts are not only the results of bad rain but also the overgrazing of the land. Our soil is being depleted and desertified at an alarming rate and I even read a British report in colonial times a while back mentioning this problem. Our population has gone up but the land we grazed on hasn't meaning these short cycles of drought tells us the soil is at breaking point, not to mention climate change isn't helping either. The nomads needs to be settled on our vast coastline and given fishing boats, taught how to fish and the government should be building cooling facilitates and roads so they can get their seafood to the market. We have a large landlocked neighbor(Ethiopia) with a huge market we can provide for and the rest can be sold domestically or exported to other countries abroad. Small scale farming can also be taken up and we can use groundwater as an insurance to irrigate crops when the seasonal rains fail. We need long term solutions to our problems instead of settling for prayer rains and fundraising while ignoring the root cause.

Successive SL governments have been an utter failure. SL politicians and its diaspora have failed. Even after 25 years A QUARTER OF A CENTURY of peace and stability, in 2016, in the 21st century it has:

No effective legal system
No financial system/institutions
No regulation of the economy
No economic growth strategy
No sidewalks/pavements/street lights
No water treatment plants
No sewage & waste water systems
No roads
No modern, international standard ports
No modern, international standard airports
No power plants
No factories
No manufacturing industry
No proper healthcare facilities
No hospitals
No high quality education
No employment
No welfare/social security for the most vulnerable people
No ICT industry (excl. telecoms.)
No world-class universities
No world class architecture

Corruption, corruption, corruption
Dependent ENTIRELY on imported foodstuffs
Extreme shortage of water
Half the population addicted to QAT ($100's of millions given to ETHIOPIA every year)
Still exporting basic LIVEstock in 2015 (no modern mechanised abattoirs, no value added activities)
The majority of the population lives in utter destitution
A remittance-imports-livestock economy monopolised by a small group of rich men/politicians
Poor property ownership laws/rights

But there is 'peace' and 'democracy'... and the clan-obsessed morons can bootyclap for Kulimye/UCID/other pointless parties, so its allright.

Our lack of interest to settle in coastal towns is a big part of this problem. Charcoal trade is an other major problem. The ultimate cure for both problems is a cheap and affordable electricity . There can't be a huge fishing and manufacturing industries without cheap electricity. And we can't use modern cookers without cheap energy . The Government must seek alternative energy sources. Ethiopia is a good of source of cheap energy we should buy some electricity from them for our western towns, we should also keep investing green energy and pursue exploring our own oil fields.
