(SomaliNet) Reports from the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northeast Somalia say that the army commander of Sool region in Puntland state defected into the self-declared break away republic of Somaliland on Sunday.

Mohamed Hussein escaped into Somaliland where he was welcomed by the Somaliland authorities in Aynaba district of Sool.

It is not yet clear why he joined Somaliland and there is no word from Puntland on his defection so far.

There has been territorial dispute between Puntland and Somaliland for many years.
