Unrecorded Date Large number of Somali women continue to utilize bleaching creams to have lighter skins and look beautiful. These creams contain contain hydroquinone which is considered to be toxic. Hydroquinone prevents the production of melanin - the vital skin protection and pigmentation that gives black people our dark brown colour. (Albinos lack melanin and that is why they look white and are prone to skin cancers).
Melanin protects the skin from the cancer-causing ultra-violet rays of the sun. It also helps slow down the ageing process.
I am horrified and wonder why our beautiful sisters are destroying their skins and endangering themselves by using poisonous creams which are literally health hazard.
Why are our sisters using such creams? Do they use these creams because of low-self-esteem? Surely if they felt good about their skin colour or themselves perhaps they would not have used them. How can we educate our sisters agaist the physical and psychological dangers of these products as well as the worldwide ban on their manufacturing?
