Dear Sister:
I too am having the same problem. I took shihadah nearly 4 months ago, but have been unable to fully immerse myself in Islam. I wear the hijab when I go to Muslim households, but otherwise do not wear it at all. I feel that it is hard for me to be a good Muslima because I do not speak Arabic and learning to read and write it is very difficult for me. Insha'allah, I will have a better time with it in the near future. Because I do not speak Arabic, I feel that I am too dependant on other Muslims to interpret many things for me and would prefer to seek the guidance and knowledge of Allah on a personal basis. So, my advice to you is stick to it and your efforts will be rewarded. P.S. Where are you from? If you are from California maybe we could help each other out. Kinda be a motivating coach for one another. Another thing, as long as the man is a good practicing Muslim it is xalaal for you to marry him, he does not have to be a Somali. But if that is your preference then keep waiting Allah will provide a good Somali Muslim man for you if that is His will. Good luck and keep your head up. Salaam - Nika

Salamzzz All

Sis its really good to hear that ur trying ur very best to practice ur deen we don't see that very often. I would say that I know wat ur going through but I would be lying. But wat I know is that this is all a test and that U must hang on and inshallah by the grace of ALLAH(swt) U will become stronger bit by bit....and for U to admit wat ur going through is one step up the ladder towards ur GOAL.
What I would suggest is:
*for U to surround yourself with Muslim friends that will tell U wat is wrong from right.
*And the issue about the Men.....I would say that U leave it to Allah and you'll be guided to the right man
And from their U would progress inshallah
That's about it!!!!!!!!

If I have said anything that has offended any1 please forgive me and anything GOOD I have said came from ALLAH(swt) and anything Bad came from Me.
Salamzzzz All:)

ASalaamu alaikum:
My dear sister in Islaam, since a few people have already given you words of encouragement, I don't really have anything to add. The only thing I can say is that eemaan flactuates. It is upto us to try and bring it up every time it goes down. Please read the post below. It is an excerpt taken from a book by Sheikh Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid called "Wasaa’il al-Thabaat or Means of Steadfastness: Standing Firm in Islam" If you have time, you can read the book in its entirety. You can locate the whole book on the internet at:
http://www.islam-qa.com/Books/WasaailThabat/english.shtml

May Allah make us those that remain strong in our deen. ameen.

"Thinking about the delights of Paradise and the punishments of Hellfire, and remembering death.

Paradise is the abode of joy, the consolation of those who grieve, the final destination of the believers. The soul is by nature not inclined to make sacrifices or work hard or stand firm unless it gets something in return that makes difficulties easy and helps it to overcome the obstacles in its way.

The one who knows about the reward will find it easy to work hard, because he will be aware that if he does not remain steadfast, he will miss out on Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth. The soul needs something to lift it above the dust of this earth and raise it to the heavenly world.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used the mention of Paradise to encourage his Companions to stand firm. According a a hasan saheeh hadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by Yaasir, ‘Ammaar and Umm ‘Ammaar when they were being tortured for the sake of Allaah and said, “Patience, family of Yaasir, patience, family of Yaasir, for your destination is Paradise.” (Reported by al-Haakim, 3/383; it is a hasan saheeh hadeeth. See Fiqh al-Seerah, ed. Al-Albaani, p. 103).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to tell the Anssar: “You will face selfish people after my death, so have patience until you meet me at the Hawd (cistern – on the Day of Judgement).” (Agreed upon)

Similarly, one should think about the situation of both groups (believers and kuffaar) in the grave, the gathering, the reckoning, the scales of justice, the bridge over Hell, and the other events of the Hereafter.

Remembering death protects the Muslim from backsliding and helps him to adhere to the limits set by Allaah, so that he does not transgress them. If he knows that death is closer to him than his own shoelaces and that his time could come at any moment, how can he let himself slip or persevere in deviation? Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Always remember the destroyer of pleasure.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 2/50; classed as saheeh in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 3/145)."

Assalam alaykum: This is an advise from your brother in Islam. For me, whenever my Iman is down, thinking about Death are one of the things i do to bring be back to reality. So inshallah you will read the 2 enclosed poems that are attached.

DEATH

The Righteous will die,
and the wicked will die ....
The warriors who fight jihaad will die, and those who sit at home will die ....

Those who busy themselves with correct belief will die,and those who treat the people as their slaves will die ...

The brave who reject injustice will die,
and the cowards who seek to cling onto this life at any price will die ...

The people of great concern and lofty goals will die,and the wretched people who live only for cheap enjoyment will die ...

Every soul shall taste of death ...

- from the book 'DEATH' by Shaykh 'Ali Hasan al-Halabi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I AM A MUSLIM BUT ONLY BY NAME

I am a Muslim, but only by name
When it comes to practising, what a shame!

I go to friends and relatives in suit and tie
It's alright if I occasionally lie

Yes I practise, BUT when it suits me
Or more to the point, when it pleases society.

If I show my ankles, they'll point and laugh
They'll think it's too short and reckon I'm daft.

If I trim my moustache and grow the beard
They'll reckon I'm a fanatic or something weird.

If I wear the sunnah I'll get great reward
But the Kuffaar will look down on me, that I can't afford.

Yes I'm a Muslim, but only by name
I make excuses which I admit are rather lame.

Yes I'm a sane man and I'm on the right track
Who am I kidding, I feel like a right jack!

To hide my inferiority complex I protest it's unimportant
Though my heart screams to tell me I'm a blatant fraudulent

The best thing is no-one can hear what's going on inside
People think I've got it made and with my life I'm satisfied.

But I'm afraid this is a fable and it's a pure deception

I have no peace of mind but this I daren't even mention.

If I remain ignorant it's OK, 'cos then I don't have to practise
Yes I'm convincing and these are baseless evil tactics.

But I read the Kalima and I think I have Imaan
I can't help my attitude - I was placed in a Kufrstaan.

Yes I'm a Muslim but only by name
And with my precious life I'm playing a foolish disastrous game!

Assalam alaykum, this is from your muslim brother in Islam. For it is known that from the things that increase your iman, one of the best is a reminder of Death and reality. Thus, this is a poem on Death by one of the learced students of knowledg in Islam.

To the sister that posted this question, please read the hadith below.

The Muslim Repents and Turns Back to Allah:

From Abu Sa'eed al-Khudree (radiyallaahu 'anhu) who said that Allaah's Messenger said: The example of the believer with regards to eemaan is like the example of a horse with regards to its tethering stake; it roams around and then returns to its tethering stake, and the believer is negligent and then he turns to his eemaan. So feed the pious with your food and treat the believers well. Reported by Ahmad (3/38,55)
