Thanks for God, who gave me an opportunity to answer this question.
Constant desire and aspiration for name and fame is a destructive spiritual illness termed as love of fame.
A person is deprived of accepting the truth due of
this illness.
Rasulullahi (SCW) Says: “Two hungry wolves eleased
into a flock of sheep do not cause as much damage as love of wealthy and popularity does to a mu’min’s Deen.”

It is Haram desire for fame and popularity. However,if a person is granted popularity without desiring therefor, as is normally the case with the AWLIYAH, then Allah will protect him because this was granted to him without his hankering or desiring for it.

The love of fame, always desire other to praise and speak highly of him and he eagerly lends an ear to such speech, thereby pampering his soul. Animals are fattened eating grass and fodder, while man’s soul is fattened listening by to his praise. (And the end result of the fattened animal is known to one and all.(Trans)
AT THE END
The remedy to this disease is to ponder over death. If the entire world were to fall at the feet or a person in reverance and adulation, it will be of no avail in the solitude of the grave – for there will be none to solute and none to laud praises. Rather than striving for this temporary pleasure, the Everlasting pleasure
of Allah’s acceptance and happiness should be aspired for.

Peace Garyaqan

I can say better than Garyaqaan,

Seeking popularity is prohibited in Islam and speaking of proundness and fame. It's consireded spritual illness and one should avoid it. Because of this, you won't see Muslim scholars and Imaams being cadidates of positions and campaigning rather than they got elected while they are sitting in their homes. Do you know how the KHULAFAA got elected for being Amiirs of the ummah. The popularity of Fircown and Haaman kept them away from Islam and that's what jews caused to fight with Mohamed even thought they know him for his prophethood as they know thier children. They simply said we don't deserve to follow an Arab prophet but they did indeed knew him he was the true and last prophet. You know the companion of the prophet wanted to keep their popularity inside their hearts and that's what they were know for. One of Salafi scholar said, "if you see a person who is odler than you, tell you heart that he is better than you because while you were in womb of your mother, he alive and worshiping Allah. And vise versa, if you see a person that's younger than you, tell your heart that he's better than you because you were disobeying Allah before he was born. That's how humble they were and it's Islamicaly wrong to claim proudness at it's unkown weather it'll end up in heavan or hell.

Asalamu alaykum Ikhwan,
This is my first time here! I must say it's an interesting page. About Popularity,...popularity can be a bad thing or a good thing depending on the Circumstance. If it is desired its a Bad thing, on the other hand, if its brought upon you without you actively seeking it, then it is a good thing. This is clearly evident from the sunnah of the prophet PBUH. Before you proceed, Let me tell you that I am not a scholar by any stretch of the imagination, but I do take great interest in Islam.

There is the well known Hadith about - three people being thrown into the hellfire due to The love of Praise (popularity); the scholar (who taught for fame), the martyr (who fought for fame), and the person who gave his money in charity (so people would say he is generous). These three people desired the pleasure of people over the pleasure of Allah. Also it is apparent that the person who desires the praise of people must feel some pride in himself, for he feels himself worthy of being praised. Also this person is in danger of becoming arrogant and boastful!

However if a Muslim is well liked by all people this a great sign that Allah also likes him/her. The following Hadith illustrates this. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
If Allah has loved a servant [of His] He calls Gabriel (on whom be peace) and says: I love So-and-so, therefore love him. He (the Prophet pbuh) said: So Gabriel loves him. Then he (Gabriel) calls out in heaven, saying: Allah loves So-and-so, therefore love him. And the inhabitants of heaven love him. He (the Prophet pbuh) said: Then acceptance is established for him on earth. And if Allah has abhorred a servant [of His], He calls Gabriel and says: I abhor So-and-so, therefore abhor him. So Gabriel abhors him. Then Gabriel calls out to the inhabitants of heaven: Allah abhors So-and-so, therefore abhor him. He (the Prophet pbuh) said: So they abhor him, and abhorrence is established for him on earth.

It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, Malik, and at-Tirmidhi)

A more clear Hadith on this issue can be found in Tirmidhi: A Bedouin said to the Prophet, sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam:

My praise [has been] embellished, and indeed my vilification [has been] disgraced. The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam remarked: That is Allah. [Tirmidhi 3266, Kitab Tafseer al-Qur'an, Declared Saheeh] So it is clear Ikhwan that reputation is a very important thing as it indicate to others and more importantly to ourselves our standing. Often I hear fellow muslims say I dont care what people think about me! This type of attitude frightens me because often the person saying this is trying to be humble or atleast appear so. I think, it would be better to say (if one must say anything) im not doing this for the sake of people but rather for the sake of Allah. Similar expressions are found in the Quran.

Finally, Islam has a way in which the negative and positive aspect of popularity can be balanced. We find in Ibn Majah: On the authority of Sahl bin Saad Al-Saedi, who said :

A man came to the prophet and said: "O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and people to love me." He said: "Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what people possess and people will love you."

a fine Hadith related by Ibn Majah and others with good chains of authorities.

I hope this helps. Please feel free to correct me or to add on or to elaborate...
Asalamu Alaykum
