Today, 10th January, 2001CE the Shaikh, Allaamah and Imaam, Muhammad bin Saalih al-Uthaimeen breathed his last after the Asr prayer, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Shaikh had been ill for a while due to cancer and was receiving treatment for this ailment.

From Abu Khidr Shakeel ibn Muhammad al-Amreekee, student at Makkah al-Mukarramah who narrates on authority of Shaikh Wasiyullaah, that the Shaikh had resumed giving lectures in Ramadaan but only by way of telephone from the hospital. He subsequently gave lectures in person in the Haram al-Makki but was later told that he could not give any more lessons and was returned to hospital. He passed away after Asr prayer today. His funeral prayer is due to be held after Asr prayer in the Haram al-Makki tomorrow.

This is indeed a great calamity since along with it, knowledge has been taken away from the Ummah. Sa'eed bin Jubair was asked, "O Abu Abdullaah, what is the sign of the perishing of the people?" He replied, "When their scholars perish" (Daarimee, no. 324) and the hadeeth of the snatching away of knowledge by the taking away of the scholars is well-known in this regard.

We pray to Allaah that He grants Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen an abundance of mercy, forgiveness and that He rewards him with Paradise for his service to Islaam, the Muslims and the Ummah, just as we ask Allaah that he hastens the sending of Mujaddids (Revivers) such that the light of Tawheed, Sunnah and Salafiyyah, remains uppermost, aided by Allaah, till the affair is established.

Abu 'Abdullaah Muhammad ibn Saalih ibn Muhammad ibn al-'Uthaymeen at-Tameemee an-Najdee was born in the city of Unayzah, Qaseem Region on 27th Ramadhaan 1347 A.H./1926 C.E. in a famous religious family.

He got his education from many prominent scholars like Shaykh 'Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa'dee, Shaykh Muhammad Ameen ash-Shanqeetee and Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz.

When he entered into teaching, a great number of students from inside and outside Saudi Arabia get benefited from him. He has his own unique style of interpretation and explanation of religious points. He is from among those scholars who served Islaam without any type of religious prejudice and kept themselves away from the limitations of blind-following. He is distinguished in his great exertion of effort in religious matters and analogical deductions which clearly prove the religious understanding he possesses, and the correct usage of the principles of religion, he adopts.

In giving religious verdicts, like Shaykh ibn Baaz, his Fataawa are based on evidence from Qur.aan and Sunnah. He has about fifty compilations to his credit. Presently he is teaching Religious Fundamentals at the Sharee'ah Faculty of Imaam Muhammad ibn Sa'ood Islaamic University, Qaseem Branch. He is also a member of the Council of Senior Scholars of the Kingdom, and is the Imaam and Khateeb of the big Mosque of Unayzah city.

Sheikh Uthaimiin

As I have known him, was a servant of Allah, ( Wa laa nuzakee alallahi ahad). To this days his lessons are helping muslims the world over, so in a sense, he is not dead, but living through his writing and tapes. He was known to speak the truth, help the poor, and was never allured by positions and wealth.

It is unfortunate that many non Arabic speaking brothers and sisters can not understand his lectures, but this man was a monument along with Shiekh Bin Baaz, Al Jibreen and others who have maintained ballance and foresight in their attempt to guide a loose herd and focus attention to the true path of Prophet Muhamamad SAWS.

Their task was the toughest a Scholar can live, a world of contradictions, ahwaa like the oceans, division among the believers, enemies lurking form all directions and weak, if not unsincere leaderships.

His funeral was quite a sight, as I heard, so many people came from all over to bid him farewell, why, because they all respect for what this man stood for. While others die and are never mentioned. " wa ajcal lii lisaana sidqin fil aakhiriin"The Good news is that Allah is alive and will never die. So let us concentrate in his worship like Sheikh Utheimeen and others we have a lot of respect did before us.

May Allah protect sincere Ulima of this Umma, and may Allah bestow upon them the right Hikmah to guide the Ummah in these difficult times. aamiin
