in islam, are women allowed to work alongside men? or should they confine themselves to certain professions such as teachers and doctors for other females?

the latter view is held by many of my somali male colleagues and to me the desire to seclude women indirectly potrays women as sex objects.....
something to be hidden otherwise....this kind of attitude equals us humans to goats.

as far as i know (and Allah knows best)there is not a specific verse in the Holy Quran or Sunnah that prohibits women from lawful employment. 2 of the Prophet's (PBUH)wives - khadija and zaynab were businesswomen, moreover, one the caliphs appointed during his time a woman as the marketplace supervisor.

i know that a woman's role first and foremost is that of mother but i believe that if the husband/father consents then a woman should be able to do any lawful work as long as certain parameters are observed.

don't know if this topic has been discussed previously but still would appreciate if anyone can shed some more light on this topic?
