As we have known for a while, South Mogadishu is having Islamic Movements(millitants, courts, etc) And now we hear that Merka and its area are having the light, also. Read on: "Islamic Courts Play Bigger Role in Somalia! MOGADISHU (Oct. 29) XINHUA - The popularity of the Islamic courts has rocketed in chaotic Somalia following crackdown on bandits and illegal roadblocks. Large demonstrations were held Friday in port town of Merca, 120 Km south of the capital, in support for the islamic courts. Sheikh Dahir Hassan Gutaleh, deputy chairman of the Sharia implementation council, told the crowd that they had no political agenda, but just to create a safe environment for the common people to conduct their usual businesses. A eyewitness in the town said he felt that there's nothing worse than lawlessness. According to eyewitnesses in Merca town, hundreds of militiamen from the Islamic courts, all in green uniforms and tarnished scarves round their neck and head, strengthened their positions around the port and the police station of the town. The Islamist militiamen have further spread their influence and power to some of the neighboring districts and villages so as to consolidate their presence in Lower Shabelle region where over 36 illegal roadblocks which hindered the business activities have been washed away. While the Islamic courts in South Mogadishu are effectively dealing with the insecurity along the roads between Mogadishu and the southern regions, the sixth Islamic court in South Mogadishu was founded by the Sheikhal clan Thursday. More than six battle wagons and 90 trained militiamen have been donated to the new Islamic institution by its sympathizers as the first round of contribution. During its inauguration attended by more than 600 guests from the other Islamic courts, Sheikh Nur Ali Osman, its chairman, said his men would apply the security building measures taken by the sister courts in both sides of the capital."
