1. A Mercy of Allah to the Muslim Ummah by the 2 Eids

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said : "The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) came to Madeenah and the people of Madeenah, in Jaahileeyah (the days of ignorance before Islam) had two days for play and amusement. So the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "I came to you and you had, in Jaahileeyah, two days for play and amusement. Indeed Allah has replaced them for you by that which is better than them: The day of Nahr (Slaughtering) and the day of Fitr (breaking fast)."

[saheeh reported by Ahmed, Aboo Dawood, an-Nasa'ee and al-Baghawee]

Shayk Ahmed Abdur Rahman al-Banna said:

This is because the two days (al-Fitr and An-Nahr) are from the legislation of Allah, the Most High. His choice for His creation and because they succeed the performance of two great pillars - Hajj and fasting. In them Allah forgives the pilgrims and all those who fast and spreads His Mercy over all of His obedient creation. [fath-ur-rabaanee 6/119].

2. Permission to listen to the Daff played by young girls.

[daff = a simple hand drum (like a tambourine without the jingles)]

Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) said: "The Messeneger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), entered into my presence while I had two young girls singing the songs of Bu'aath (a great battle), so he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) reclined upon his matress and turned his face away. Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) then walked in and rebuked me (told me off) and said: 'The music of shaytaan in front of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam)!' Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) approached him and said : 'Leave them'... Aisha (radi Allahu anha ) continued, "And when the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) dozed off I signalled to the young girls and they left."

[reported in Sahih Al-Bukhari (949, 952) and Muslim (892), Ahmed (6/134), Ibn Majah (1898)]

and in another narration "O Abu Bakr every people have an Eid and this is our Eid. " [Sahih al-Bukhari]

The two girls were not trained singers and the poetry they were singing contained the description of war and bravery. Hence mentioning it aids the affair of the religion.

As for songs that mention filthy deeds and openly invite to forbidden acts and manifesting evil speech, then they are prohibited. It is inconceivable that this would take place in front of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and he would forget to censure it.

Haafidh Ibn Hajr said:

"The benefits of this hadith are : The legality of being liberal towards the family during the days of Eid, by all means that provide ease for the soul and relaxation for the body from the toils of worship. However,

abstaining from such things is better. Also that displaying happiness in the days of Eid is from the symbols of the Religion" [Fath-ul-Baree 2/443].

3. Adornment and Beautification for Eid

Imaam as-Sindhee said :

"... It is known (from hadeeth) that the beautification for the day of Eid was an established custom amongst them (the companions) and the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did not disapprove of it. So the custom remained."

[Haashiyat-us-sindhee 3/181]

Hafidh al-Hajr said :

"... Ibn Umar (radi Allahu Anhu) used to wear his best clothes for the Eids." [Fath-ul-Baree 2/439]

Imam Malik said :

"I heard the people of knowledge deeming the preferabilty of wearing perfume and of beautifying in the Eids."

Ibn al-Qayyim said in Zaad-ul-Ma'aad (1/441):

"He (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) would wear his best clothes when proceeding to the two Eids and the day of jum'ah. On one occasion he wore a green Burdah..."

[Refer to Silsilatul-hadeeth as-Saheehah 1279]

4. Going to and returning from the Musallaa (Place of Prayer)

Jabir (radi Allahu anhu) said : "When it was Eid the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to alter his route of returning."

[Sahih al-Bukhari 986].

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah said :

"The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to change his route on the days of Eid, such that he went by one route and returned by another. It is said (he did this) to give salaam upon the people of both routes. Or that both groups get some of his blessing. Or that anybody who has a need can take care of it. Or to make manifest the rituals of Islaam... and this is the most correct opinion - [The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did this] for all of these reasons and for other reasons of wisdom which his actions contain".

[Zaad-ul-maad 1/449]

Tirmidhee (530) and Ibn Majah (161) transmit from Alee Ibn Abee Talib (radi Allahu anhu) that he said : "From the sunnah is to proceed to the Eid (prayer) by foot." [Declared hasan by Shaikh al-Albaanee hafidhahullah]

5. Takbeer in the Eids

Allah, The Most High, says :

"...(He wants you) to complete the period (of Ramadan) and to magnify Allah (Takbeer) for that to which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:185]

It is established that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to emerge on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr and say Takbeer up until he reached the musalla (the prayer place) and up until he had performed the prayer. So

when he had performed the prayer he stopped saying takbeer.

[Silsilatul Hadeeth as-Saheehah (no. 170)]

Umar (radi Allahu anhu) used to make takbeer in his tent in Mina such that the people in the masjid could hear him and so they would make takbeer and the people in the market would make takbeer such that Mina would resound with takbeer.

[saying of Al-Bukharee in his Saheeh (2/461): "Chapter: Takbeer in the days of mina and when proceeding to Arafah."]

When Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) would leave his house on the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr and 'Adhaa, he would say the takbeer aloud until he reached the musalla (prayer place) and then make takbeer until the imaam came. [al-Daraqutnee and Ibn Abee Shaibah with an authentic chain, refer to Irwaa

al-Ghaleel (650)]

The manner of takbeer has been reported from some of the companions (radi Allahu Anhum) :

Ibn Mas'ood used to say :

"Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. Laa ilaaha illallaah. Wa-Allaahu-akbar. Allaahu Akbar. Walillaahil Hamd."

(Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. There is none who has the right to be worshipped except Allah. Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and to Allah belong all Praise.)

[Reported by Ibn Abee Shaibah with an authentic chain]

Ibn Abbas (radi Allaahu anhu) used to say :

"Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar, Walillaahil Hamd. Allahu-Akbar wa ajallu, Allahu-Akbar 'alaa maa hadaana"

(Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest and to Allah belongs all praise. Allah is the Greatest and Most Sublime. Allah is the Greatest to that which He has guided us to.)

[Reported with an authentic chain by al-Baihaqee in Sunan al-Kubra 3/315]

Salmaan al-Khair (radi Allaahu anhu) said : "Make Takbeer of Allah say: " Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar kabeera."

This is what is known from the sahaba. However many of the lay muslims have opposed this dhikr and innovated dhikr and additions which have no basis at all....

Hafidh Ibn Hajr said :

"Indeed additions have been invented, on this day, which have no basis." [Fath-ul-Baree 2/536]

Also saying the takbeer aloud does NOT mean that it is permitted to say it in unison (everyone together in chorus), as some people do... so be cautious.

6. When to eat during the two Eids

Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said :

"The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would not set out in the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr (eid after Ramadhan) until he had eaten some dates."

[Sahih al-Bukhari 953]

Imam Al-Muhallab said :

"The wisdom behind eating before the Eid prayer is so that no person with doubt in his mind thinks that fasting remains until after the prayer. So it is as if he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wanted to stop this from

occuring."

[Fath-ul-Baree 2/447]

Buraidah (radi Allahu anhu) said :

" The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would not leave on the morning of Eid-ul-Fitr until he had eaten and on the day of Adha he would not eat until he had returned from the prayer and he would eat from his sacrifice" [Tirmidhee (542), Ibn Majah (1756), ad-Daarimee (1/375), Ahmed (5/352) with

a hasan isnad]

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

"... as for Eidul-Adhaa, then he (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) would not eat until he returned from the musallaa and he would eat from his sacrifice."

[Zaad-ul-Ma'aad (1/441)]

7. Bathing Before the Eid Prayer

Nafi reports :

"Abdullah Ibn Umar used to bathe on the day of Fitr before setting out to the Musallah (place of prayer).

[Reported by Malik 1/177 with an authentic chain]

Imam Sa'eed ibn al-Musayyib (a famous taabi'ee) said:

"The Sunnah acts of Eid-ul-Fitr are three: walking to the musallaa, eating before proceeding to the musallaa and bathing." [Reported by al-Firyaabee with an authentic chain. Refer to Irwaa

al-Ghaleel (2/104).]

8. Does one pray before of after the Eid prayer ?

Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu Anhu) reports :

"The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prayed two rakahs on the day of Fitr and he did not pray before or after this... "

[Sahih al-Bukharee 989].

9. The Greetings and Congratulations of Eid

Some of the companions would say when greeting each other after the Eid prayer :

Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minkum wa Ahaala Allahu alaika

(May Allah accept it from you and us and may Allah make it return to you)

[Majmoo al-Fataawaa (24/253)]

also:

Muhammad ibn Ziyaad said:

"I was with the Abee Umaamah al-Baahilee and other companions of the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and when they returned from the Eid, they said to each other:

Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minkum

(May Allah accept it from you and us)

[Mentioned by ibn Qudaamah in al-Mughnee, Ahmed said the chain of narration is good, refer to al-Juwhar an-Naqee 3/320]

10) Reprehensible acts done at the Eids

i) The man "beautifying" himself by shaving the beard.... the authentic hadith contain a command from the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) to leave the beard...

[sahih muslim]

ii) Shaking the hands of strange (non-mahram) women.

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

" To pierce a metal comb into a man's head is better for him than for him to touch a woman, for whom he is not a mahram."

[ar-Ruyaanee in Musnad 227/2 - hasan chain]

iii) Imitating the non-believers and westerners in their clothing, in listening to music and other reprehensible acts. Indeed the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said :

"Whoever imitates a people then he is from them."

[Ahmed 2/50,92 - hasan]

Also the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said :

" There will be a group of people from my ummah who will seek to make fornication, the wearing of silk, intoxicants, and musical instruments permissible (halal). Indeed a people will stay at the side of a mountain

peak and when he (a needy person) comes to them in the evening asking them for aid, they will say to him: 'Come back tommorow.' Allah will destroy them and cause the mountain to fall upon them and change others into apes and swine, and they will remain like that until the day of judgement."

[Sahih al-Bukharee 5590]

iv) Entering into the presence of women who are non-mahrem for them.

v) Open display of beauty by women, going to the market and other places (dressed without hijab).

vi) Particularising the day of Eid for visiting graves.

vii) The abandoning of praying in the masjid by many people (once Ramadan is over).

viii) Not having compassion for the poor and needy. The sons of the rich people display their joy and happiness, they eat the appetising food - and they do all of this in front of the poor and their children without having any feelings of sympathy.

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother that which he wishes for himself."

(Sahih Al-Bukhaaree: 13
