Islamic does not allow laies in any situation except thre. (And it will be noticed that the threesituations exempted actually serve the poeple without truly decieveving the or doing tem any harm).

Those three Occausions are:
1)for making peace between two Muslims.
2)for pleasing one's wife and
3)in war.

In the first case, a man might go and say to one of the two quarrelling Muslims and say, for instance, "I am surpriced you hold your brother in such low esteem. Actually, he was speaking well for you and I think has lost of respect for you.
In the second case, on might say to his wife, for instance that the food she cooked was wonderful, (although the truth was very different),
simply to please her and generate a pleasant atmosphere at home.
In the third situation, when one for instance, captured by the enemy, he might lie to them about the details of the Muslim army.

To the above three, there is a fourth. It is that situation when a Muslim is facing injurious persecution becouse of his faith. He might say something to please his captors and secure a release if he can bear
it say nore. He might for instance, declare faith in their religion to revert back as soon out of their reach.
Apart from these occasions, about which the prophet him-self has ginev us directions, in no ather situation should Muslis speak lie...

The Question you have asked concerns the situation when speaking out truth will create a problem, It should come under the first answer, and whatever can create a problem or harmfull between the Muslims are absolutly Haram.....

Cilmi, if I say something and it is something that I believe(or know) to be truth, it is still my opinion, right?

Sometimes, the truth is more important than facts. The truth can be what is our belief at in any given moment of time. For example, we believe to be the truth that we are a created beings by Allah, but can you proof it's FACT to an atheist ?

Anyway, if you compromised the truth and lie about it in order to avoid quarrel, you are not only hiding knowledge, but you are denying the truth you believe. If you do not like to quarrel, you have a choice to be quite or leave from the argument.

You see, the truth always hurts, but you should not lie.
