Orson Welles once said:
"In Italy, for 30 years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed. They produced Michalangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock!"

Look at us today! Somalis. Yes we are still mired in bloodshed and anarchy, hunger and disease. That is all covered by the mainstream media. But this is not all that we are about. We are about survival, and succeding in a foreign lands too. We are caring and care for our extended families back home.

CNN et. al will not tell you all this, after all who cares about a Somali who is suceeding...that is not 'breaking news'
-Did you hear in the news when Masjid Khalid opened in Canada?
-Did you hear about Dar-Al-Nuur in Virginia
-Did you hear about University of Amoud; did you know that 114 students attend and that there are 40,000 books in this library
- Do you know about the telivision station that opened in Mogadishu
- Do you know how many daily newpapers there are in Somalia.
- Do you know about the elementary schools that exist in Somalia
- Do you know about the doctors and other professionals who are working back home.
- Do you know how many students are in Universities world wide....can you imagine the potential they have!!
- Do you know how many Somali websites there are?
(thank you Somalinet for the global village:)

Please, let us celebrate the good in us, for so long the focus has been on the negative. If other people rejoice in our miseries. Let us acknowledge our valaint efforts of surival. It ain't "breaking news" , but it is equally newsworthy!!!.
Let us pay tribute and acknowledge the work of all the honest, decent hard working Somalis who are making a difference no matter how small both inside Somalia and in the diaspora.

Suban good for you.

I don't think we can celebrate opening a Masjid or Elementry school, instead we have to critisize ourselves regarding what we could have done to be .

Omarani bro, I agree with the need for critical assessment of our situation at all times. However, it seems that no-one is acknowledging the efforts of the community at large. All Somalis are not warlords or hatemongers.
Many, many, many Somalis are doing good against all odds. Let's hear about this. Let us have an eye for the postive too. If we relie on the inforamtion from the mainstream media to define our reality, we will continue to internalize a lot of negativity. Why not balance that out with the good news that is happening in our communities everywhere.

That is good brother we have actually survived in so many ways and we are still doing it upto this minute but to admit the true facts and not fiction we still have many problems. First of all we are the only country with people who speak the same language and share the same religion who kill each other with so much hatred. We are the only country with no government , no infrastructure. Think about how long it will take to get back to where the rest of the world are. We have done alot yet there's is so much left to be done. If you would any more discussion you can get back to me.

I don't see what's the point of dwelling in the past. Unless we are in denial we all know our status as a society. So if I'm not reading sister Suban wrong what she's trying to say or point out to us is that we need to move on and heal. We can't do that if we constantly are exchanging negativities.
Let's make the best out of the life we have and stay positive. Brothers and sisters, let's keep hope alive and pray for a healthy and better future.

Sincerely,
Wacan

All the power to you and the surviving brothers and sisters, despite all the odds. LOL!

Mr. Nasty:

Why do you have to be a player hater! If you couldn't achieve your potentials, now you got to come here and level the field to your step so you may feel OK in the midst of your failure.

Bro.
We (students and the educated individuals) are strong and are/will bring the pride back to our people (hopefully sooner than later)! Ya hear me!

SUUBAN!!!!

I applaud you for advocating for the promotion of the good side of the somalis....If there is any... We have actually two target groups somalis and non-somalis.

To the non somalis, It is always good to bring the good side of somali...A kind of promotion...and image maintance specially, after what is happening around the somali diaspora... We are outcasts everywhere...people live on social wlefare, unemployed...stand in shopping malls as if it ceelgaab.....the image of somalis in world metropolitians is one of disgrace....and one of nomadic life....

TO the somalis, I would prefer that we bring out the bad side....our shortcomings....the disease (cancer) that is killing us...trabilism, an alphabetism, social welfare/security, Qaad, family breakdowns, etc.....

Wa soomaliyey aan is jafno......

Think Positive, do positive, you will have positive outcome. We lost those three aspect ages ago. May Allah return them to us, so we rejoys as we were once upon a time.

I give credit to Suban to this intelectual thinking. Keep your heads high, one day you will regain your dignity.

thanks sister for bringing this topic so that we can discuss.Suban my sister i really dont think that somalis who live in tha western countries are engaged or ready to educate themselves.Believe me sis just imagine there is around 15000 somalis in Denmark of whom less than 100 study at universities or other higher education institutes. So tell me what and where is the future??Why as should i as a young somali youth be optimistic while my country is in disarray my people suffer due to hunger and diseases while those of us who have been lucky enough to come to the west dont use this tremendous opportunity to acquire knowledge and be the savior of our country(take the example of israel for those who know history i.e they built (jews)built a strong state mainly becouse of their knowledge)
Dear brothers and sisters one thing is clear "our future as a nation and as apeople" is bound to be grim becoz of many factors tribalism, ignorance,an alphabetism e.t.c
My brothers and sisters lets get knowledge !

Thank you Suban for opening a topic that touches each and everyone of us. We had our shortcoming in the west and else where, but we had our victories too. Thank you sis for balancing out the equation the way it's supposed to be balanced. Every nation had it's ups and downs and we are no different. let us remember our mistakes so we can correct them, let us forgive and not forget cause in remembering only we can avoid the paths that we have travelled before. Let us cherish life and live it to the fullest.

I believe
that if somalis truely understood the value of life none of us would have suffered . A fear is born inside of you when you know what life means and how valueable it is. A fear of being killed if you kill, a fear of being robbed if you rob, a fear of being rapped if you rape someones daughter or wife.As long as you have that fear in your heart, you will think twice before you commit a crime A fear of God and the ultimate presecution is also the best prevention of misconduct. We somalis have no fear ,and that is where our problems start. We walk around with the attitude of someone who has nothing to loose and that is why we lost everything.

Pc few of you attacked suban eventhough her point of view was every valueable and ligitimate. brothers and sisters we are trying to have decent civil conversation so please don't spoil it like everything else.

To suban
Good luck sister, i'm truely proud of you .

I love you all...as simple as that. Keep up the good work wherever you are and fear Allah. Respect your parents and help your relatives. Look after and care for our young children, mentor them and help them out in schools and wherever you meet them. Lots of good things had come out of the somali diaspora...including the positive role our great sisters are playing in our vulnerable society today...RESPECT FOR THE SOMALI SISTERS WHO INSTIGATED THIS INSPIRING TOPIC. Thanks Suban for your positive outlook to life.
Just having a positive mindset is in itself a big step forward for any refugee. However somalis should not put to much emphasis on using their education or experiences from the west to build up somalia.
One thing ppl should note is that once a person leaves her country especially as a refugee and settles in a far away place it is almost always impossible to go back for a variety of reasons.

From my own research on other groups that came b4 somalis eg iranians, indians, nigerians, arabs etc very few ever return.
What one can do is to establish a strong community in the country u live in. A strong community abroad will strengthen and encourage ppl back home. Besides u need a powerful community to lobby for your ppl in somalia.
By the way our children born in the west do not neccessarily have the same dreams about somalia as their parents they are first and foremost citizens of the countries thy were born in and they do not have that overpowering urge of returning to somalia soon!!
exile aint easy baby
