Kamal it maybe great news but what is the source of this great news?Or is it the same old news that Somalia has petroleum but cannot drill it because Saudi Arabia is against the drilling?Give us reliable data and where the petroleum and natural gas is in Somalia.

Dear Kamal
Indeed it is a great news for having such resources in our homeland. But the question is do we have the skills, capital and expertise to exploit such resources burried in our yards. Somalis do not understand any thing about economic development - or resource exploration. since when have the Somalis exploited the marine resources God given to us...despite their abundance we continue to die of starvation.

If that is true that there are lots of oil in Somalis - the day when such resources are to be explored - Somalis will start killing one another - certain clan would want to control all the oil revenues than sharing with all Somalis. Every clan will start taking ownership of such national resources - so and so clan will say that the resources are in our clan territory and no one has a right to exploited it or have control over its revenue.

So in my opinions that we somalis are not ready for such an event. We still have a long way to go. Exploration of resources requires stability, security, democratic government that does not embezzle all the revenues, equitable and effective ways of utilizing oil revenues in social services such as education, healthcare, employment creation and housing. At the moment, Somalia continues to be without a government - total anarchy, lack of security/stability...etc.

I conclude that first that the Nirigta maxay nuugtaa maxayse ku nuugtaa.

Salaam

Those are some great points you have highlighted. It's sad that we somalians can't find peace and stability.
I would hate to imagine what it would be like if we were to try and explore the potential natural resources of the country espeacially with each clan trying to manipulate and control the potential revenues.
You are right bro we need a strong government and stability before any exploration can take place.

I wanted to tell you that there are reliable data on the exploration that was carried out before the fall of the last Somali government that show there is a large abundance of natural gas (Commercially viable too) and petroleum which at the stop of the exploration was not in commercially viable quantities. But there was high optimism that given the low rate of exploration that was carried out there is a high chance of commercially viable oil to be discovered as can be supported by data from landsat images that were taken at that time. Geological analysis also show the high chance of oil discoveries in several areas despite the low rate of exploration and drilling of wells i.e. less than 100 wells for more than half a million square miles.

Areas of a high potential petroleum discoveries include central somalia (Mudug region), Areas close to mogadishu i.e (Afgoye and qoryoley) and in north somalia coast there is an offshore petroleum discoveries possible. The commercially viable Natural gas is also in North Somalia.

Mohamed Ali

I ‘am very happy there is PETROLEUM IN SOMALIA because this could be a way to build our economy, but that’s not the only resource of income Somalia has when it comes to economic growth. From the knowledge, and research I have gathered I found out that east Africa’s coast has more seafood than North America and Europe put together. WOW!!!! Now the question is, can we protect our ocean? Or are we so cut up with the clan thing that we don’t care about who takes what. If this is the case than we can forget about PETROLEUM IN SOMALIA, because before we know the Americans will take over the country, and they will be the one’s drilling or should I say stealing oil just like the Asians are emptying our coast, right about now.

You are absolutely right there is a lot a fish in Somali seas. I am in Canada and they have this tribe called the Newfies who live in Newfoundland and Labrador. These guys are such good fishermen they completely emptied their part of the Atlantic of all fish. Now they just sit around collecting welfare. We should take these guys to start a fishing school in Soamalia. If we are even 5% as succesful as they were we would be rich indeed. No more skinny Somalis they would be filled with fish protein.

You have touched topics that would be relevant soon if the going Djibouti conference bears fruit. Then we would need your skills nard smarts to build a strong civic society that is not dependent on government, but would keep the government on its toes, whether it may be resource management, equitable distribution of wealth, and making sure that the operations of the government machinery is transparent.

It is old cliche that a people get the kind of government that they deserve. from now, Vigilance should be the cry word of our people.

Ok is every body ready for the bad news? SOMALIA'N TERITORRY HAS NO PETROLIUM RESERVES. What we are very lucky to have is the longest coastline in the continental Africa. This "we gonna strike oil" bullchit is the collective fantasy of the somalian people, that somehow there is a magic bullet for our misery. The fact is, the majority of the somalian population has always lived in extreme poverty in world standards. Before and during this dark period, infact in the recorded history of somalians. What we need to do my brothers and sisters is stop fantacizing about this oil crap and get down to the hard task of reconciliation. Lets build a new nation out of the rubble. Lets lay the foundation of democratic society that would be the envy of every African nation. Lets make sure that the future leaders of the Somalian republic wil never have to kiss azs for diplomatic recognition and a sack of grain to feed a failed society.........thank u!! Lord bless all Somalians

Brothers and sisters(somaalis)-Alxaamdullilaah, thanks to allah we have got enough interlectuals and we are our selves. To be very precise, the petroleum, gas, fisheries, oil, long beutiful beaches, fertile land and etc are our resources no doubt just to mention afew.Surely, none of these is ever exploited even the least. But the question is, that fact that we now realized them how do we go about exploiting them? The basic factual answer is this brothers,-we need to prioritise them.Firstly let's protect our caostline, the fisheries, the birds, the beaches being altered and exploited by foreigners without us even realising that actually there is something going on in our ocean.Secondly, the petroleum issue can easily be delt with after we succeed in those other forementioned areas. Can we feel moved and motivated whenever these issues are mentioned, i know others will just read and more worse some will not even bother . MAY ALLAH (SWT) BLESS AND GUIDE US ON THE RIGHT COURSE AMIIN.

It shame that certain tribes can't not find peace.
But if u said u were going to dig the the oil then u need to be profesiolism, expertise, and above the equipment and the patience. Somalians don't have 30% of that. There are about a many places in somalia where there is are oil.

*Ceerigaabo
*Saylac
*Boosaaso
*Laascaanood
*Garowe

Those are the confirm places may be there is a lot more we have rich country but not quality peolple. As siyad said "Dal baa iga haraya dadu igama harayo".

While we all agree that there is a buried treasure in our own land, and the need for stability to explore these natural resources. let's ask ourselves, what are we (individuals) doing to facilitate peace in our Somalia?.

assalamu calaykum:

Remember the availability of petroleum does not build a country as some of you suggested...Brains build a country ie human-capital....that is what somalia need......

Legend (political rhetorics) has it that somalia has abundance of oil, natural gas and uranium...but are those things edible? I sence the same kind of rhetorics in here......

We do neet petroleum or metals...we need to farm , herd animals and fish.....

I AGREE WHAT OTHER BROS SUGGESTED, WHAT BUILDS A COUNTRY IS MAN-POWER NOT PETROTEUM OR ELSE SO LOOSERS DO NOT FORGET YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO DO THAT JOB. WHILE SITTING AROUND AND PRAISING TRIBES, REMEMBER DO SOMETHING TO HELP THE COUNTRY AND THE PPLE.

Oil Man

Monday, February 19, 2001 - 09:32 am
Hi, this is my first time ever being in this forums and was interested in joining this conversation about oil. I myself am deeply involved with oil affairs, since I work for Saudi Aramco, the worlds' largest oil company. Without a shadow of a doubt there is oil in Somalia, as a matter of fact 8 of the top oil companies still have contract to explore for oil in Somalia from the Siad Barrie regime. It has been a known fact that Somalia contains oil since the starting of the 20th century, but the reason production never started are due to two reasons. The first is Somalia's late achievement in gaining independence. The second reason is disputes over how oil got into Somalia. What I mean about how oil got into Somalia is, some geologist think that the oil in Somalia is oil draining down from Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Therefore, Somalia should not be allowed to gain contracts to drill for oil since the oil technically belongs to the Arab countries. After years of research, it was finally discovered that the oil in Somalia is rightfully Somali property. Now I bet you are still wondering why after gaining independence, and research-proving oil in Somalia is Somali property, why was oil exploration still lacking. Well that is not all true; oil exploration in Somalia did take place, but mostly in the North of Somalia. However, even the most of the explorations took place in the North of Somalia does not mean all of Somalis oil is in the North. That does not even mean 90% of Somalis oil is in the North, the only reason oil exploration started in the north was because former president Siad Barrie was advised by British and Italian geologist, and important ministers in those two nations that the South of Somalia should strictly be for business and building, and the North should be an area to started to resource draining. The reason for that is although most of Somalis oil in the central and southern part of the country. If the oil in the North was finished first Saudi Arabia, and Yemen would no longer have anything to do with Somali oil affairs. In conclusion, the new Somali government has recently signed an oil contract with one of the largest international oil companies in the world Totalfinelf. The exploration that will be conducted by this company is reportedly worth 3-4 million dollars for one year. Moreover, will be closely watched by many other oil companies, cause it will be the first real test for the new Somali government, to see if the have any real authority in the country. If the Somali government can provide the necessary safety for the oil explorers then eventually, all the other oil companies will want to do business with Somalia.

I disagree with the thoughts that oil does not build a nation. The reason is just look at the Middle East, those countries were broke and full of a bunch of uneducated people. After discovery of oil in their countries they are some of the richest countries in the world, but still have some of the lowest literacy rates. So I do agree that you do need to help yourself, but lets not count out the big help oil and stability can bring.
