QOSLAAYE

Saturday, September 16, 2000 - 05:41 pm
Dear Reader: This my point and how I see the indiscriminate of ••••••'s slatter toward other clans, and now they want lead. Why do I have hard time digesting this. You be the judge.

Mohamed Hassan's only crime was to believe what he was told about America. For that crime, the Somali youth spent two years and three months in U.S. jails.

When Mohamed was 14 years old, his native Somalia was in the grip of a bloody civil war, a conflict that left virtually no Somali family untouched. The war invaded the Hassan household on December 28, 1990, just as the family was sitting down to dinner.

On that night, a group of armed men associated with the rival •••••• clan forced their way into the Hassan home. They dragged the family, members of the Marhana subclan, outside and tied them together, then systematically shot them, one by one. Mohamed's father, two of his sisters and two of his brothers were killed outright. Shot in the hip, Mohamed survived by playing dead. He watched, terrified, as the men ransacked and then burned his home to the ground.

The boy spent the next three years in flight, staying for a time at a mosque where he was nursed back to health. Meanwhile, the civil war raged on, eventually claiming 30,000 Somali lives directly in the fighting and another 300,000 in the ensuing famine. Another million Somalis fled into exile.

"After the attacks, we would go out and pick the bodies up off the street to prepare them for burial," recounts Mohamed, now 21 and a resident of Minnesota.

The teenager lived in constant terror that the eventually victorious •••••• forces would kill him because of his subclan's affiliation with former Somali President Mohamed Siad Barre's clan. After almost three years in hiding, he sought refuge at the home of his father's former employee on the Kenya-Somalia border.

But Mohamed's situation remained precarious. When he was 18, the man who had taken him in advised that his best option was to escape Somalia entirely. "Go to America," he told the youth. The man explained that he could secure traveling papers for Mohamed and that when he got to the United States, all he had to do was ask for political asylum.

"He told me that Americans were nice people, that there was freedom there," Mohamed recalls. "If I knew then what would happen, I would not have come to the United States."

Stay tune for more ......
