I believe we have the most beautiful sounding language in the world. If the white media heard the Somali language they would think of it as a very romantic language. But it in my opinion is limited in words. For example how do you say dentist in Somali, how do say the word shape or shapes, like circle, square, rectangle, triangle. I am not saying lets get rid of it, I am saying lets improve it. What do you other Somali people out there think. |

in english we say "God Bless you" in arabic we say
"Yaar Hamoukoum Allah"... what do we say in somali? |

You should improve your nickname first.
It is extremely difficult to improve any language, particularly when we are talking about introducing new concepts like those you mentioned. It requires time so that local people may absorb and eventually find a name for it. You cannot just sit down and impose labels, people wont buy it. One reason why is it so difficult to find somali word for dentist may be that concept of dentist is new to somali people. Things have to exist in the field for long time to get labeles. Can you explain the concept of Air-condition to reer Gosha? If on the other-hand air-Condition has been there for a long time it may get a name just as Refrigirator has the somali word of Qaboojiye. |

may I ask you what it the classical arabic term of "Yaar Hamoukoum Allah" if any exist? In may humble understanding these kind of phraces is what islam teaches and inreaches to arabic language, it didn't exist before prophet Muhamed(ppuh) so why bothering to translate into somali?or turkish or even arabic?

I agree with you to improve the language but may be i believe in different direction than you thinking...... For your information, in the case you don't know it there are blent of somali words about shapes, I guess u aren't good at maths and physics  -... rectangular->laydi, square->labo jibaarane, cirle->goobo, triangular-->sedex xagal., dhululubo, qabaal, etc....
I love somali translation of science terms,,, but we just missing to finish the job of translating the new area of science and technology like computer science and biochemitery works..... how do you say in somali file?open?copy?paste?click???? |

that is classical arabic. If a muslim brother or sister sneezes, we have to say it. We gonna get a reward for it. But, i don't know how to say it in somali! Not all of us know arabic. |

Why on earth you want to translate into somali? do you think u could be rewarded it if you say in somali?..Free translantion of it could be samething like" Ilaahay ha kuu naxariisto"
From the Fiqh point of you, could the words of ibadah(like reading qur'an in salat, or calling prayer"Azzan" )be translated into another language than arabic during that particular ibadah activity? how about the rewarding of it? say like you make your azzan in somali? Is it valid or not?? |

you guys know that the somali language is one of the most unique languages of the world. with so many vocabs and words, it's the richest language in the world. if you just read one of those old somali poeoms you will realize how many words we have lost in this century alone. i don't understand 75% of those peoms, it because of the old language. now a days everything is changed inculuding our language, there are alot of arabic english and italian words. to the person who wrote this topic, iam sure there somali words for every word u wrote.
last time i was reading this somali physics book and u can't imgine the language in there.
like

cell=ukun

about your shapes. on my own inturbatation, but i sugest you should ask older people, they might tell you the exact words.
dentist=dhakhtarka ilkaha/ilka-daweeye
square=afar-geesood

circle=gobaab
you also have to know that as the world changes and new technology comes in. there will be a new words.
for example, in every language in the world they have same words for these things.
1.internet
2.computer
3.software
4.cell-phone
5.tv
and anything else that is new to the world.

and what's not improving our somali language is that we don't write. i mean when was the last time anybody wrote a somali noval. mybe if we can write kids-book, personal stories, fiction or fact, what ever the writting is, it will help the language. if there ever gonna be a government in somalia, i would tell them to presure the people to write in somali. like the 70s. |

Look I know you will get a reward if you do say Yaar Hamoukoum Allah in Arabic; but still that doesn't mean that our own language shouldn't have a word for it. Plus a word doesn't always have to exist in an area for it to be a word. For example why is it every language in the world has a swear word; just because we say mother f u c k e r, doesn't mean there were people all around Somalia already f u c k ing their moms. You could just site down and create a word, and if the people don't accept it then tough luck. Learn it or you don't get a good job. I think Somalis fight so much because our language is so limited; therefore we are not good at expressing our feeling right. |

Eighty per cent Soomaali weyn speaks informally--which when we don't know--or might not want to know--in hands.
We describe everything that we don't have a name to be like:
Waxaas
Geedkii
Bahalkaas
Qajafkaas
Etc, Etc.
But literally those words have a a literal meaning--but, we don't follow its literal meanings when we describe a thing or want to get by describing it.
Like:
"Ar 'bahalkaas' isoo qabo?"
"What is 'bahal'?"
We do know we are not referring it to be an ANIMAL. But, rather a thing that doesn't not exist in our lingo, but we simply refer to be a 'bahal' or whatever you might want it to call.

OK.......PEOPLE..U know what I like about Somali language??? I observed the way U guys were talking.....and as the conversation went on.....U spoke about Arabic terms/shapes & sizes of geometric figures/ what to say when U sneeze....? Don't U guys get it.........We don't have to improve anything coz as long as we understand each other.....that satisfies me.....
This funny thing happened to me about a week ago...about somali language......I was conversing with my mates and my cousins...and one of them said..."Guys there is a squirell that lives near my window.....and U know it makes so much sound and it wakes me up..." The conversation at this point was in English...Anyway as the story went on....we all laughed at him.....and someone said "What do you call a squirell in Somali"? Before even someone tried to answer....I had to butt in with a......I know...I know......It is called "Daba bakeyle"......Well was I embarrassed......I had a Rabbit in my head and couldn't say the word.......which infact was "DABAGALE". Boy was I the talk of the week and the joke of all jokes was on me......
In conclusion....I reckon language should be marvelled at.....not ridiculed....coz if U look at things they could appear to be as funny...Un-intentionally.

What I want to say is; the Somali language is beautiful no doubt, but we need to set standards for our language. A proper spelling for each word, a word for almost anything in the world, grammar rules, and so on. Cause like every top language in the world we must have all these to compete, in the worlds economy. If we had an advanced language we would not need those languages like English or Arabic to communicate. |

this issue is very important and it deserves to be proposed every corner of this web and the athor webs as well.It is real that somali language is limited in the area of technological words and urban names for a simple reason is that most our words came from nomad tradition society
and the words refelect that environment specially the peoms and the proverbs wich we use mostly are related to that tradition.I think so we can evaluate and exband our language to create an organisation wich creates new names and translates the other languages,i agree with idean if we have more words names we could have the chance to have choises to express our feelings.I strongly supporting the idea of creating a standarts for our language,a proper spelling for each word grammer rules and others. |

I think Somali language is advance enough and dont need improvement.May be to shorten the words e.g WAAANBAXAAYAA to wanbaxaya.It takes less space.
you can even find a word for Spaceship in somali e.g Dayax gacmed.

Languages Just like anything in live evolves, look at the english language, 40% of the words are new terminologies coined to describe something that never existed. I think the same should be with Somali. Hey if you want to find a name for something that doesn't exist in Somali dictionary go a head, give a try, you will be surprised how popular it will become. |
