The Epitome of Somalinism is lost, the mobilisation to the Land of Rome has influenced us to the core motto-popularly known as 'When you go to Rome do as the Romans do'!
So begins my article on this important issue facing Somalis on the diaspora of Western Hemisphere. It is estimated that Somalis living in the west have evolved from the identity of victim of civil war to victim of enforced assimilation to foreign culture. These estimations are obvious i am sure to all of you reading this article right now.For instance, the issue of Greetings among ourselves is encouraged by our beloved religeon and expected from the teachings of our culturely upbringing. The etiquette of work environment is a good example.I work in a prestigeous firm which moderately involves 99 % of non-immigrants.I see couple of somalis once in a while across the hall,we sometimes greet and sometimes pass each other in an akwardness manner.Usually i initiate the greetings to save the agony of reproofing myself later.I also noticed the behavior in these very same Somalis with others who are not Somalis. Its alarming to see how well the somalis respond to the non-Somalis in general. One can speculate it is out of cry to fit in or resentment they have against their fellow Somalis. The point becomes - no one knows the real motives. Is it conceiveable that Somalis are getting with the program of Kissing A$$ to fit?Are we loosing our core identity and our beliefs?Do we have to assume every Somali you see on the streets is your enemy OR your inferior?Do you need to proove something to your non Somalis peers? Are we loosing ourselves?

I dont have that problem, whenever I meet a somali, no matter who initiates, we shake hands and sometimes go as far as hugging each other, I dont realy know were you live, maybe a place where fugees are not allowed to live(lol). speaking for somali fugees everywhere I invite you to our camps (menneapolis, columbus, melbourne, seattle, utange etc) to give you big hug. yes we do assimilate for survival i think, but we know were we belong, put that in your head.

Valid concern and good observation.
To Dhukunbe: I realy did not understand your point are you just objecting what anon said or you have valid point for critique.
I observed myself that many Somalis are not confident to greet each other in public specially where they feel they are very few, I don't know about shaking hands to a stranger (even Somali) but greetings like assalmu calykum or iska waran, sidee tahay etc would appropriate.
Hey whatever we lose in this so called Western Hamisphere, we should not let lose our identity!!!
peace.

My ex-boss who was a Carribian man once asked two Somali teens what did you just greet to each other and they proadly answered "what's up" expecting his approval, he then asked if there is any greetings in Somali culture or religion and the answer was yes, he then questioned do you know them and again yes. So why do you have to greet each other what's up while you are not talking to a Jamaican or a white boy.
The point is we need to educate ourselves to be able to assimilate properly to any society we live with.
PEACE TO YOU ALL.

To: The person who raised this topic,

It's a greet point that you got but I sagest that you should try to know those ppl in person rather than saying hi & bye, What I wonder you meet them all the time and you don't know each other.
How come?
This just come up to me, I don't know if this goes on this satiation.
Somalidu waxay ku maah maad daa salaan badan waa laysku nacaa.
Even though remember salaanta in ay muslim iyo gaalo ay ka dhaxeeyso.

Where I live is a small city and there no that many Somali ppl but when ever I meet them we greet each other, We don't have that kind of problem or let me say never happen to me.

Be the better person in this try to greet them,
It doesn't cost you anything to be nice.

lol@ Suomaliainen,
For a second I thought I missed to read for Faitha and I scroll till the top page then I found there's no one called Faitha lol,Then I try to imagine, The guy was up high in the sky, He could spell his nick name right and the girl he was day dreaming about lol.

To " " the guy who raised this topic

Good observation, If there is one word that can capture this problem it is " Shattered confidence" which is ironically evident in your choice anonimity. Like most immigrants we are fighting in a loosing battle when it comes to keeping our culture, and our spiritual fitness. However we need to be little bit more careful on why Somalis are leaving dhaqankooda. This is my thoery. Most somalis who came to North America are either from two group: rural somalis and young people. For rural people they are not friendly in nature even in somalia, if You see someone who is subdued you would normally say he is reer baadiye. The other group, young people they do not understand or see our culture and guess what nobody greets each other other in this country so that must be enough reason for them to be act the way they are acting. For those of us who ku soo caqliyestay soomaliya we are frustrated by these two groups whenever we meet them. So next time you see a somali fellow you would assume that he wont return your greeting, then why bother. In my opinoin this could be the problem. In general I don't think we are loosing our identity. Some people are saying Somalis are assimilated that is bull, just look at the percentage of somalis who have white or black friends. Yeah some of us are drinking but we didn't call allkulistayaasha in somalia they are assimilated. Did we? I like Americans they are like Somalis you are who you are. In somalia what do we call for the somalis who lived Somalia 500 years? Shaanshi and Reer Xamar. Did we ever called them Somali, their rightful names? When these faggots understand they are SOMALIS and they will never accepted then we are all set. Accepted by who GAAL. KUFRI DULI,NAARTA JAHANAMA DADKEY KUHAREERSANTAHAY.

Do you know why we have a shattered confidence? It is our country YOU WEAK SON OF BITCHS lets build our country and RISE above GODD DAMN CLAN LOYALITY, Who are you? I AM FUCKING HAWIYE,DAROOD ISAAQ. EITHER WE DO THAT OR WE FUCKING ACCEPT OUR FIATH IN THIS COUNTRY. Who is with me?
