Hi friends,

Nowadays it seems that some people confused the adjective of the word "Somalia", specially for the last 8 or 10 years.

Since the colonial powers came to our country, specially the Brish, they had the adjective "Somali" which since then widely used both in our counrty and overseas.

If you have ever read any documents written by previous somali goverments starting from the 60's till late 90's you will never sea the word "Somalian".

I don't understand where this new word(Somalian) came from. The only reason that i can come up with is that since lot of young generations came outside somalia mainly to english spoken areas, they learned English and as result they were conforted with chance of using the adjective without checking any referance. Then they came to the conclusion that once Ethiopia became Ethiopian, Kenya turned into Kenyan ...etc then somalia will follow suit. And that is where the wrong adjective came from.

Please if you have different view, let us see your version.

Thank you
Gablaax

To; Anonymouse,

I would not say your are silly, dum or idiot but one thing i am sure about it is that you know nothig about what you trying to comment.

Even I have doubt if you have a clue about the differance between noun and adjective, other wise you would not comment in a such stupid way.

I will show you that one of the above words is an adjective,just read this exaple;

Somali women, somali man, somali government and somali language. The "somali" word in this context is a clear adjective which descripes the following nouns, in this case; women, man, governemt...etc.

So my friend you need to go to your ESL teacher and ask what an adjective does.

I hope that would be very good lesson for you about what an adjectives is.

Thank you.

WRONG!

In reference to your tittle i see no women, men or other nouns that could suggest you meant to use 'somali' as an adjective.I still stipulate my case, you are dum, idiot and silly! Your Honor move to strike!

Gabalaax:

You are absolutely correct in that Somali is both a noun and an adjective.

a Somali woman --adjective

a Tall Somali --noun

And yes, Somali and Somalian ar both accurate. But I fear the less elegant "Somalian" term is gaining ground in popular usage. It is a pity because "Somali" is the superior term not only for its economy and ease, but its likeness to the word as it is used in the originating language.

Who asked you?

Gabalax

If you could have said Somali -woman or Somalian men,it would have been an adjective. For your information an adjective further describes a noun.In this case, the noun is Men or women and the adjective could be said its somali or somalian.Dum idiot you and Xoogsade both.

assalamu calaykum

Gabalaax, what a question bro! it is an issue that should be discussed. You are right, most somalis who have acquired their language skills recently use the word somalian.

There is no such word, be it adjective or noun. The term used by to describe a person born in somalia is somali.

It is unfortunate that people comment on things just for the sake of it. I think the usage of the word "somalian" tells us about the extent of how somalis are coping with education in the diaspora. It is unfortunate, linguistically wrong.

I would have prefered if the others who participated in the discussions would have come with an excuse for using the word somalian.

what a suggestion Mr. Gabax

However lots of us have been trying to correct these young guns to the correct term "Somali" and but it seems they either too cant resist saying somalian or don't want to, the former of the two is understandable since people make mistakes and i to comment on the last part (not want to) is useless. I think the number of those who still use the term somalian is going down dramatically, thanks to people like you.

note: just remember when you want to describe yourself and say -- waxaan ahay somali somalian*a ma aqaan wuxuu yahay.

geel-qaad!!!''

well done!!!!

the problem is that our kids/teenagers and adults are not taught correct english, so these people learn words such as "somalian" in the playground, chatrooms etc.. they think that the usage of the word "somali" will make them a fool, because the word"somali" looks rather like a somali word than an english word,....confusing eh.......
