It has made the talk of week. i have been invited to the 2000 graduation ceremony of a high school where my neese was among the graduans.the principle says to me it is the first time a somali won any merits/awards from his school. three somalis were able to prove to their mates, principle and their community at large that they are capabable of wining the best in accademic and social activities, something which was never heard of among my people in the country we live in.

They assumed that we are always good at using guns and fighting wchich they also joke about the somalis at theri schools. They redicule the somali students that their world is the world camel and camel milk, deserts, destituses who gets their living by robing others, no brains but only talks, and yes only chaat eaters. But for somali to come and beat their white folks in the accademic world was no more of a joke to them.

Three somalis at the graduation have set a record in their school and made a new perspectives about the somalis. i have never felt so proud and elavated to see this young people standing on the podium infront of no less than 500 people and being named among the top in the school.

The first was a boy, he achievs excellence in mathematics, merit in computer and technonlogy and lastly an a ward wining for being the best soccer player of the school. Belive me it never occured to me this would be a somali at first especially with the bad reputation of my people here. The amazing thing and the most astonishing of all this boy was never accompanied by his parents/relative. can you belive that???!!! He made to the ceremony walking one hour and he had to walk back home in the dark.i really head a mixed up of fellings- proud and at the same time angry about the boys situation.

in the second lot comes my little neese , she was only 18, and i saw her being nervous and shy. the day before the ceremony she comes to me and asks me what she needed to do at the cerecomy and how to act. mashallah she was always Allah fearing and did not wanted to do anything that would displease Allah and knowing her uncles too well she wouldnt want to take the ceremony without knowing what was required of her. when she move on to the podium claded in her beautiful Hijab it was announced that she achieves merit and certificate award in science, excellence in chemistry and calculus, and finally her high school certificate. i tell you folks she made my day too well.

the third was also a boy, he looked so young for his age and he achieves excellenc award in Englinsh as alternative language, and certificate award for services to the school [he was the school 2nd deaputy head boy]. infact to this boy the school principle refered him as a person of good character and he liked him very much.

Seeing this young brothers and sisters of ours achieving top in their schools was enough for me that our young generation are the hope to count on. i still remember what the priciple said in his final speech, he said, while addressing the crowd, ""with this generation the future of this country is bright, we have got a very bright futures and a successeful one"".

my attention was attracted to this last phrases and wallahi it brought tears my eyes. i came to reflect on the meaning of those words again and again and was convinced enough to the root of our problems.

please i would appreciate if you share with us about other somalis who were/are successefull in accademic or other great somali thinkers you know

jazakallah for your time all

I know a girl who is an inspiration to me , her name is Hani she comes here sometimes preaching (Marshaallah), i have known her for nearly 3 years now and i think she has a achieved a lot and she has only been in the country for 6 years and she puts us to shame, i have been practically been in this country for all my life. Let me tell you something her. She was award for the best student in her college ,the best somali student , excellent attendance , puntual for the past to year. whenever we were out parying and going out with boys etc whe was always at home doing her work. We would always tell her to come out but whe would always refuse(good move). She is well resopect around the area we live in , she doent talk bout people shhe just minds business and i guess thats why she has a lot frineds and the resepct of our elders. She always got distinction for assignment. she has taught me a lot , thanks to her i am back to college. She going university next year. She is also a person with great personality , funny , smat and she fears allah. i believe that there a lot somalis out there who are smat but we are losing outse;fes in the countries. So hani please keep up the good and i hope that you will me throught my education. you a true friend. Most of the girls who live our are they were born here and yet they have nothing to show.

In prespective

I am happy for the three Somalis and other young heroes. Keep up the good work. But dayib we are a nation of 8 million people, and surely we must have smart people. Generally speaking Somali are smart people, I am not just saying that because I am Somali. Somalis are associated with distinctive characteristics, clevernes and bravery. However, whether we used them appropraitely is questionable. I am sure the present conditions of somalis may warant celeberation and optimism for the achievements of certian individuals, whether in colleges, high schools, but we shouldn't be reading that too close. I can see your concern of our Overall condition, especially your communtity, how somalis are treated and how they disrespect themselves by choosing the "easy way". But agian, are we expecting too much? Aren't we the first generation? Many people seem to forget that. If we want to put things into perspective we need to remember two things. We were once a respected nation and community and we are capable of surpassing that.We produced brilliant, highly skilled people, and if today other somalis prove themselves it should not come to us as surprise. Second, our individual acheivements does not mean anything unless it is reflected both in our communities and and our Beloved Somalia. The central point in my comment is that when confronted with present realities, many somalis have difficulties in puting things in prespective. One possible explantions could be that young people have failed to read our past. Another explanstion is that we may be reading too closely what others are saying about us. In short, I don't give danm about what other think of me. Neither should you poeple.

I don't know why you are suprised ?

These achievements are inevitable after all we are the chosen race (all the evidence suggests this).

I am conducting various genetic engineering projects at the moment with the aim of creating a Somali SUPER RACE which with the help of my GRANDPLAN will result in SOMALI SUPREMACY AND EVENTUAL WORLD DOMINATION.

We need Somali people with IQ's above 130 to come to the research centre for a thorough medical examination and to donate DNA samples.

Need not apply if your family has a vested interest in improving Somali /African-American relations(or any other contaminating populations).
