I would like to hear everyone's opinion as to what they think our reputation is around the world. I personally think that it is a bit on the "What is their problem" side of the spectrum. Please, feel free to express your opinion and add any personal anecdotes.

ALL AROUND THE WORLD I THINK WE'RE PRECEIVED AS LOSERS.

WHY?
1)BECAUSE WE DON'T DO ANYTHING FOR OURSELFS.

2)WE TAKE WELFARE, AND LOVE IT.(MAJORITY OF PPL, IF YOU DON'T BELEIVE ME, COME VISIT ENGLAND).

3) WE DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE EXCEPT ABOUT OUR LITTLE LIVES( WE THINK THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND US).

WELL THIS IS MY OPINION.
I DON'T LIKE IT THAT WE'RE THOUGHT OF IN THIS WAY BUT, IT'S NOT LIKE WE'RE CHANGING ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
MOST PEOPLE AIN'T EVEN TRYING TO CHANGE, THEY'RE CONTENT WITH THEIR LIVES.

assalamu calaykum:

The image of somalis as portrayed by massmedia, an politicians, and enforced by somalis themselves:

1: Parasites, most of us live on social welfare/security
2:Nomads, waxaan iska dhiibnaa meelo badan. England is the latest "promised land"
3:Liars ..we lied about our identities, religion, and origin
4:Uncivilised: We spit on public places and dress in sometimes women's clothes
5:Primitive: We flock like sheep and shout in cafeteria and public transport
6:Double standards: We give the impression of being poor but at weddings we dress like arabic sultans and their concubines (DAHAB AND DIRAC for the women and for the men western suits and badly tied ties)
7: Law-breakers, we drive without a lícence, we don't pay dues etc.
8:Quasi politicians: We discuss politics about the middle east , chencnyaa bosnia . while we see our own country in shambles.
9: We tell our host countries, that we want to repatriate, while we at the same time raise money send passports etc to make it possible for our relatives to come here.

TO BE CONTINUED....

ps: Any solutions

Adoomo, Qalbi waynayaal.

Why the hell you care what others think about you? You guys are liability to Somali Identity. Acuu Du are you bastard. You are not a somali, fucking imposter. It is not like deciding being a Lesbian. If you are Somali be it, defend it, die for it. If you don't know better ask others what being somali means before you shoot your mouth. This is why many people don't like people who were born outside somalia. You can not even defend who you are. In addition, you are being bombarded by other people's projection of what somali is. Look, is it so difficult to say this "I WAS BORN IN MUDUG, I AM SOOMAALI, AND I DON'T CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT ME. Just repeat that after me, and change that part where were you born.

Wise man you are adoon qalbi wayne, if you are Somali. If not get the •••• out.

I REALY DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK, BUT ARE YOU SAYING IT DOESN'T EVEN BOTHER YOU AT TIMES.

I LOVE BEING A SOMALI, CAN GET A BIT STRESSFUL A TIMES, BUT I WOULD DIE FOR IT.

ANYWAY, I WAS REPLYING TO THE SUBJECT POSTED NOT TO YOU. SO F))K OFF.

assalamu calaykum:

There is no rule man made or divine which states that you should defend the undefensible. FYI it is time for us somalis to be critical of somalis...

We are here, in different parts of the world today: The main reason, is the lack of self-critism and reflections. Come on ..You can't defend a bunch of war-mongering, child-killing, social security-hunting somalis because they r somalis.

Calling a person names such as bastard and lesbian, etc brings the true somali out of you. The somali who uses labels to defame a person. Come on bro/sis.....That is HARAM!!!

So, let us as somalis discuss issues that may help us take a place in this world.

Accuudi....sis...Accept my sincere appologies n behalf of a fellow somali who has gone a stray. His comments I am sure are not shared by many a good somalis.

WANAAGSANE,

THANKS BRO.
THERE ARE NOT MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE INTELLIGENT COMMENTS TO SAY, BUT I BELEIVE YOU DO. SO KEEP IT UP.

IT APPEARS THERE ARE MANY SOMALI'S IN THIS FORUM WHO ARE IN DENIAL.

THE POINT THAT WE ARE MAKING IS THAT WE AS SOMALI'S NEED TO RISE ABOVE ALL THIS SH%T.
WE NEED TO GET UP OFF OUR ASSES AND DO SOMETHING
CONSTRUCTIVE FOR OURSELVES.

SOMETHING THAT CAN MAKE US PROUD TO BE A SOMALI.
SO THAT WE CAN WALK AROUND AND TELL EVERYONE:

WE ARE SOMALI AND VERY PROUD!!

I am shocked and concerned to learn Somalis hate their own and make mockery our beloved nation.
Most of you have been made so dead that you will come here to tell one another nursery rhyme to demote and disgrace our nation on public places.its very naive to make such a nonsense that Somali wear cloth in certain ways what is the relevant?
Aren't we talking about reputation or how to wear cloth?
Somalia is a great nation that had a civil war like any other countries and we are striving to stand up again with the help of Good decent Somali loving people not hypocrite who feel to insult is the way to lift your people.

Be proud Somalia will be the best country in Africa for the next ten years.
Be proud Somalia has a free market unlike other African countries.
Be proud our nation survived in Ten years of anarchy with no help outside and without central government.
I am proud and you should be too that Darwish fought the British and when they could not beat the Great Army they used (Air power I may say The first Nation in Africa that European used Air Attack) that shows how good and decent we are when other Africans countries were bunch of slaves. We defend our people You should be Proud of it those who gave us that Dignity.
Be proud Somalia almost eliminate illiteracy and Cultivated every Somalis how to read and write their mother tongue.
Be proud that Somali are great People that came from a noble people.
If you are not proud all those I mention above, Obviously you are anti-Somali Although I disagree your comments indeed you are entitle to have that opinion.
Finally Somalia certainly doesn't need another judges with a chips on their shoulders against our country.
Not last but least I would appreciate an explanation on why some Somalis who do not have any confidence on their Ethnicity feel its justified in labeling that their own are bunch of "losers"

Look what Wanaagsane and acuudu have listed agianst their own identity. No body in the world would ever do that to his own community unless you are prof Siciid samatar. That really pisses me off. Never seen anything like that. Why I am so rude ,first, becuase people like Acuudu are again and agian insulting their own identity. Second, the great Sufi poet master Jalaaludin Rumi once said if someone is ignorant be ignorant to make your point. Do you remember khadra daahir heeskeeda DUNIDU WAA CAYNBA CAYN WAXAAD CEEBA U TAQAAN QOFBAY CAMALKII CAMALKIISA TAHAY. I guess molesting children, raping their mothers, being on drugs does not seem serious in this culture. besides, Do they ever generalize that kind of behavior in the West? NO. So why these Cry babies are generalizing or seem to dig this transistory issues. Did they ever remember what somalia looked like before the war. Word of advice do not use your enemie's words to yourself. If these people say we are sorry for their remarks then I will withdraw my comments too.

FOR THE ATTENTION OF DURGAL,

(P.S I SHALL NEVER APOLOGISE TO THE LIKES OF YOU!)

MY PLANS FOR SOMALIA ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1)I AM GETTING AN EDUCATION,

2)SO I CAN GO AND VISIT SOMALIA.

3)I SHALL PURCHASE LARGE AMOUNT'S OF LANDS.

THIS IS WHAT I'M GONNA DO WITH IT:

A)DEVOTE SMALL PARTS OF IT TO THE SOMALI MALE POPULATION. SO THAT THEY CAN GET THEIR DAILY SUPPLY OF QAAD ( LIKE ANIMALS IN A FARM).

B) THE REMAINING LAND WILL BE EXPLOITED ( NO, NOT TO FEED THE SOMALIAN'S, LET'S FACE IT THEY CAN LIVE ON QAAD)FOR IT'S NATURAL GEMS, OIL AND ANY OTHER THING THAT I CAN FIND WHICH CAN BE SOLD TO THE WEST FOR SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNTS OF MONEY.

IT'S ABOUT TIME A SOMALI EXPLOITED THE LAND INSTEAD OF USING IT AS A LARGE CEMETRY.

C) I SHAll BUILD MY OWN LARGE HOUSE ( NO,NONE OF THOSE SHANTY HOUSES!)

D) ALL MY SLAVES SHALL BE ELECTRONICALLY TAGGED, SO THAT IF THEY SHALL TRY TO LEAVE THE PREMISES, THEY WILL BE IN PAIN, DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL SHOCK CAUSED BY MY REMOTE, WHICH WILL EFFECT THEIR CEREBRAL CORTEX.

THEY WILL BE FORCED TO WORK FOR ME UNTILL THE TIME I SEE FIT TO DISPOSE OF THEM.

E)IF ANY OF MY WORKERS SHOULD DIE UNDER TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES(i.e CHOKE ON A QAAD LEAF, OR A MINING MISFORTUNE), I WILL NOT BURY THEM, BUT I WILL GIVE THEM THE PLEASURE FOR THEM TO PASS ON THEIR ATOMS TO THE NEXT ANIMAL GENERATION( FOR ALL YOU SOMALIANS WHO DIDN'T UNDERSTAND, I WILL CREMATE THEM, AND FEED THEIR ASHES TO THE FARM ANIMALS).

SOMALIA AT THE MOMENT IS AN OPEN FIELD, ANYONE CAN INVADE IT.
MY PLAN FOR SOMALIA WILL INSURE PRODUCTIVE USE OF THE LAND, WHILE MAKING US ECONOMICALLY MORE STABLE THAN WE ARE AT THE MOMENT, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL, IT WILL KEEP ME BOTH FINANCIALY AND EMOTIONALLY HAPPY!

P.S YOU'RE PROBABLY WONDERING ABOUT THE WOMEN........WELL......SOMALI WOMEN ARE SMART.. THEY WILL EITHER BE MARRIED TO 1) RICH FOREIGN MEN(IF THEY CAN GET MARRIED TO GOOD LOOKING, RICH FOREIGN MEN WHY SHOULD THEY RESULT BACK TO SOMALIAN MEN). 2) OR EXTREMELY SUCCESFULL IN THEIR CAREERS, IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

MY PLANS FOR YOU DURGAL, ARE NOT GOING TO BE AS PLEASANT AS THE ONES THAT I HAVE MENTIONED ABOVE.

I dont really care what "others" yes others think about us somalis, they know we are better than them and that is the truth.

this are the thinks they do/have that we dont do:

1. molest their children
2. punish their old to death-houses
3. a solder that dont wanna die
4. blind worship
5. eat raw meat
6. eat cats
7. give daughter a ride to boyfriends house
8. cant decide who gonna be their prez.
9. their men prefer men rather woman for mating
10. their woman, i dont wanna say
11. a son that calls his mom a bitch
13. some even kill their own children
14. need i go on

why do i care what they think about me, when i already made my mind about them.

the question should be what do we think about us, and please dont generalize, we are not all in the same situation. talk about you. not others for u know not about others, atleast not much. love to all somalis.

NICE COMMENTS.....I CALL WHAT YOU WROTE...THE SOMALI WAY EMBOILED IN PRIDE AND SELF-GOODNESS.... IF ONLY WE COULD HAVE LOOKED AT THINGS IN A DIFFERENT WAY, IF ONLY WE COULD HAVE ACCPETED THE FACTS THAT WE ARE A BUNCH-OF HARDTALKING, PROUD, AND USELESS PEOPLE, WE WOULD HAVE NOT COME HERE (WESTERN COUNTRIES) TO BE DESPISED. YOUR SORT OF COMMENTS, BRO, ARE COMMENTS USED BY SOMALI POLTICIANS... THE FACT IS THAT WE ARE A NATION, THAT DOES NOT DESREVE THE LABEL: GOVERNMENT...ANARCHY, MURDERERS, PARASITES......THOSE ARE WHAT WE ARE BRO...

I THINK, BY CRITISING SOMALIS, WE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO A SOUND DEBATE SO THAT OUR COUNTRY WILL LEAVE IT'S EVIL PAST BEHIND AND EMBARK ON A ROAD TO CIVILAZATION.

I AM OUTRAGED TO SEE SOMALIS MOCKING, INSULTING,AND DEGRADING THEIR OWN PEOPLE. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING, THAT THOSE WHO LIKE TO INSULT THEIR PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING A DEEP INFERIORITY COMPLEX. WHEN SOMALI PERSON GETS POST SECONDARY EDUCATION, HE/SHE CALLS OTHER SOMALIS IGNORANT; WHEN SOMALI PERSON GETS JOB HE/SHE CALLS THE REST OF SOMALIS LOSERS, WELFARE CHEATERS, AND PARASITES. INDEED, WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF WHO WE ARE, WHILE PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY AND REPUTATION OF SOMALI PEOPLE. WHY DO WE NEED TO SATISFY OTHER RACES? WHY DO WE NEED TO CONVINCE OTHER PEOPLE TO LIKE US? WHY DO WE LIKE TO GAIN WORLDLY MATTERS ON THE EXPENSES OF OUR PEOPLE? I HAVE NO ANSWERS FOR THESE QUESTIONS, BUT I AM SURE IT IS A SIGN OF OUR WEAKNESS.
ON THE OTHER HAND, SOMALIS ARE VERY VURNERABLE FOR TIME BEING, AND EVERYBODY IS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THAT. IN FACT, WE SHOULD HELP OUR PEOPLE TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL AND GAIN THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE ON INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. I AM OPTIMISTIC THAT SOMALIA WILL PROSPER IN THE NEAR FUTURE,BUT I AM SORRY TO ACKNOWLEDGE,THAT THE PEOPLE I WAS COUNTING ON, ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CONDEMNING THEIR NOBLE PEOPLE BEFORE THEIR ENEMY. TO GET TO THE POINT, OUR FUTURE DISCUSSION SHOULD FOCUS ON RELEVANT TOPICS THAT WOULD ENCOURAGE US TO MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WELL BEING OF OUR SOCIETY. ANYTHING LESS IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Hey to all pro-Somalis how are we doing?

Anonymous, I really liked your invitation to those people. Ilayn waa run dad ahaanimo waa loo dhashaa. One advice for those who are going back and forth like ping pong, being tough is the only way that Somali community can survive in merciless world. Never question your transitory short-comings, suck it up and move on. Look, I am not blind we have some problems but are they as seroius as Mr cool's list? No, no where near, so what is the fuss? I think most of Somalis are doing fine and in the future we will come on the top.
I think it is bad strategy to insult your people in order to motivating them.
We are all the same, and like Anonymous said" youth for better clans and clans for better youths" Frankly I dont know what that means but I really like it. We,young educated men and women, will take over our country from its traditional enemies ODAY QABIILL SIYAASI QABIIL, REER GALBEED and we will make it a livable and respected land for all Somalis. It is not language of intellectuals the way you described me. this is not the first time you offended me for no apparent reason. This forums is for far sighted and open-minded people who want to express their opinions without smearing the other peoples integrity. before you jump on the wagon, check the topic we are discussing and if you have anything to offer, then you are more than welcome. on top of that, everybody has a choice to select a nick name, therefore you shouldn't be concerned about mine. secondly, you are sick minded idiot whose character is shaped by psychic influences. Acuudu

Am I under obligation to anounce my plans? No. But here what I would suggest. As somalis every where we should take individual responsibility, not a community one, just do what you can. Allah says " Laa yukalifu laahu nafsan ilaa wuscahaa" For instance I am a college student and I have busy live like most people, but any time I see smart kids from high schools I let them know what the real world is at least from what I know. Even two hours in the weekend talking to them motivating them, explaning to them that they have responsibility to make their lives better and eventually their country could make a difference. Next I try to give them whatever logistics and informations I have. It is rough world and the gap between young somalis and their parents are widening. If you are not there for them, at least those who show promise why would anybody blame them when they go wild. shimbirba shimbirteeda ayey laduushaa. Imagine if each of us who are lucky, for being in college, would extend our hands to two or three young somalis and make sure they are on the right track, wouldn't you agree that we would have at least something in the future.
I would like to hear what other people are thinking or doing?
I think the question should be what are we going to do about our problems. You know the Irony of all this is that we could use this page to exchange positive information on North American Somali community. For example why particular Somali community, say Colombus Ohio are successful and what Minneapolis community needs to do to get its acts together. I believe Somalinet can have role in organizing such task. They could release needed statistics to foster information exchange as well as competition. For instance There are fifty thousand somalis in the state of Minnesota and only 40 students at University of Minnesota. At least it is something comparing to three years ago when I started when we were 7 or 8 students. In conclusion, we can devise a rating system for all somali communities through out N America, which one seems to have the edge why is that and what did they do. We need Ideas not criticsim. Let's start now.

PLEASE IF YOU HAVE BETTER IDEAS SHARE WITH US, I AM SURE MANY OF YOU HAVE GREAT IDEAS.

I have great interest in knowing how your community is doing. Your problems, real ones and your success and what you think should be done. Let is be specific and generate ideas. Remember great ideas always emerge from candid, open, discusion. We should not start discussion for the sake of discusion it must have a point. Acuudu if my comments and yours open the door for a succussful candid, emotional discusion of the future of our fellow somalis I would be happy man. For now lets forget others, we don't give danm what they think. Lets pose a real problem and see what people can come up, all of us.

assalamu calaykum!

Well, well, we were suppose to discuss about the reputation of somalis abroad but ended up discussing "HE SAID: SHE SAID, THEY SAID".. That is the somali way of not adressing the real issue when comforted by realities of life.....

Most of us seem to have been indoctrinated to believe that somalia/somalis are strong, proud, hard working, patriots, nationalists etc. But all these were proven wrong when we left somalia.

I believe that when we acknowledge our weakness and shortcomings we shall aspire. If we do not use such a forums to discuss our weaknesses who will do it for US?......Come on somalis, our time is up... Gone are the days when we were fed political junks...SOMALIS are these and that...we are the richest nation on earth....etc... the reality today is that we are viewed as a nation consisting of parasites, religious Zealots, liars, war mongering people...Is it good that a somali tell you these...or would you prefer a foreigner telling you this....

Or I am dreaming?....somalis today are synomous with places like wembley, southall(LONDON), Rinkby/tensta(sweden), Norby(denmark), Dixon(in canada)........places that have a bad image in the eyes of many....Our bad reputation has meant that there are people living on exploiting somalias plight.....the office for social welfare, different women's organisations who thrive on exposing female circumcision, different so-called somali organisations , whose corporate idea is to lie.

My point is that we need to begin critising ourselves, where did things go wrong?, how shall we change our image? what shall we do our reputaion?.....

I note with some understanding that some of us view our reputation as a taboo......

All, I am saying is that we need to discuss this and other issues ...

hats off! all of you bastards out there. Well, looks like things are getting tough here. basicly what we have here is two tough camps. I proud of you both of you bastard camps !

On one hand, we have some real critics namely Wanaagsane, Acuudu and Duh who vowed to publicly air our laudry.

on the other hand, Ice-man, Qoonsade, and Durgal teamed up and opposed those traitors by saying have some mercy on us we, somalis, are trying our best and stop beating the dead horse.

As bitch Arawello mentioned earlier, one would be torn between these two god damned camps- fighting to teeth as both presented their arguements fairly and really kicked some butts. Here things need to deeply analyzed. One will read one camp's arguemnets and agrees with them. However, that agreement lasts only before he/she the other camp's arguement.

You maybe wondering what is my opinion on this topic rather than analyzing what others said about it. Oh well, here is my two cents and where i stand. My heart goes with Qoonsade's camp while my mind goes to Wanaagsane's camp.It is emotion VS Reason. And as you probably figured out already, reason overides emotion which means Wanaagsane camp are my favorite camp and probably right ones in my little desert world. i do agree with 100% when Wanaagsane said If you don't criticize ourself and point out our weakness, would we preffer to hear from others telling us?. Well, think as this way. your mother told you that your lifestyle is dirty and you need to do some quick turn-around to clean up your shiit. You might not like what your mother is telling you but for sure, you won't feel insulted or degraded. you know your mother wants your best. But how about if an outsider tell you same thing? for sure ,you feel insulted and damn offended.won't you?.

Well, that is all those folks are trying to tell us. they don't hate somalis or somalia. it is not self hate either. in fact, they are more somalis than others who seem not concerned at all. Nor is it a mockery as Qoonsade thought it. The only reason that they are outspoken is they are concerned. And they need you to change and kick some butts.

True that we have some positives. But how about if our negatives out weighs our positives?. Even if we all agree that our positives out weighs our negative, please let's remember there is always room for improvement. And to cure a patient, the patient has to admit that he/she is sick and decide to seek professional help. it is only then the doctor can diognize the damn patient and may finds his/her the patient's problem and then then doctor may prescribe patient to medication.

Again hats off all of your bastards up there and keep up the good work. that was serious business and you all good job that can put me to sleep.

Ramadan-ul al kariim.

I feel compelled to answer your question, what is our reputation ? People I bid you not to scorn those of us, who are speaking from the heart irrespective to what ever your beliefs may be.
Prior to the war, Somalia was a just a figment to most non Somalis in North America.
After the war broke out and the plight of Somalis was visible for all to see, our reputation plummeted. I mean you won't believe some of the stereotypes that people have about Somalians. My friend one time told me in extreme confidence that "Naz you're not like the rest in your lot", I was offended of course and asked them to retract that comment.
All I'm trying to say is stop trying to shun away from the basic truth, and it's time we faced it. I am proud to be Somali, but even amongst my own people I don't fit in. I feel we are a classless society that hinges on false notions transcribed to us by our four fathers. If you look at the root of our problems you'll find that we suffer from love of material things, the show of wealth is etched in so many minds, and pride and gluttony we see extravagated in weddings or gatherings.
Try to hold a conversion with a young person, it's like talking to an empty vessel. Every other word is "aight" or "nigga this", I don't know whether this is a cry for help, or if it's a stage their going through, most often to referred to as "culture shock". While on this topic, let me tell you the number one thing that disturbs me to no end. I'll paint the picture for you, (and people who can't decipher what I am saying or can't seem to get the gist of it, then for all our sakes remain neutral instead of flapping your gums relentless just to get a hear say) it's a wedding scene, two people celebrating an important day in their lives, joined by family, friends and those who want to pay tribute to this eventful day. Well this is a formal function one should assume, why is it then that we have young men strolling into the establishment with jeans and if that isn't enough, they have to adorn them low. People take the time to get dressed up, to pay homage to the union of these two people, instead we get riffraff who have nothing better to do with their time on a Saturday night than to crash a wedding. I feel horrified every time I see this, but now I fear that I might just become immune to it and soon enough accept such garb as traditional garnishes at weddings. You guys can say what you want, but if I have described you to the "t", there's no need for discourse.
I am just about fed up with this pathetic strife of ours. So when you asked what is our reputation, you can see that you have actually opened the gates for fury.

assalamu calaykum:

Alipapa: excellent analysis....Isn't it time for us to abandon "the heart " for the "brain".. surely, the heart has failed us.....pragmatism instead of emotionally biased heart.....

I prefer words like "an isjafno, hurdada ka toosno, qabweynada ma haboono to waan dagaalameynaa, soomali waa qani, dhibaatada na haaysto gumeysiga ayaa inoo kenay etc"

Sureal: yes, I agree..

accudi: You asked whether I/any would like to go back to somalia: three comments: Home is where you find peace and justice 2: people are paying fortunes to leave somalia (that is the reality)
3:Which somalia?...

I think, this question about our reputation has shown that we think it is a taboo to even mention that somalis are percieved as "loosers-or non fitters, socially incompetent". I hate to genaralise but, the simple fact is that in many countries somalis are seen as if i may use a metaphor (the missing link in charles Darwin's theory of evolution---ape.....mankind)...This is not to say I believe in that theory. Recently, I was watching a TV report on a survey done in Finland about what Finns think of immigrants...The somalis, thought, the finns were worser than "Gypsies"....that they were parasites, that they are involved in petty crimes, that they prefer social welfare to a hard decent job and many other things.......I don't live in Finland but where I live, the somalis are percieved as such also....

Why AM I SAYING this?: Because some of you have suggested that me and others in this forums have made up the whole thing.......

I believe in the fact that if we start from a position of weakness/strength instead of false pride manifested in tradition and ignorance, we can be able to change things for the better.....

remember denial only deserves the purpose of self-pride and does not solve a problem: SO, my point is as the locals here say "LET US PUT ALL THE CARDS ON THE TABEL":O a direct translation)....and base this discussion on facts..

Acuudu Ramadaan khayr badan

Following my third comment I will pose this problem and see if we can generate as many ideas as possible.

What is the best way to help young Somalis between the age of 10-17, a critical moment in the developmnet of any child or teenage? Please be specific, and list problems they are facing and practical and Islamic solutions.

Acuudu, I don't agree with Alipapa's ill-concieved anology Brain versus Heart. If alipapa reads our comments closely he will discover that we are all concerned our fellow Somalis but we are taking different routes or ways to influence them. You and Wanaagaane may be trying to change somalis by criticizing them. On the other hand I chose to come on a different angle: Acknowledge we have problem, at the sametime put everything into perspective and see these shortcomings as transitory problem which many other first generations share with us. In addition we need to share information, Ideas in solving our problems, This is why I am posing the above question.

Wanaagsane be specific please! Say particular community has this problem such and such but again there are some groups within these comminities who are exceptional. Did you ever ask yourself why people sit and eat jaad in NorthAmerica? Understand their side of the story don't be naive. Aren't these first generation who are sending money to their families, dont speak the language, law abiding citizens. Does that count? Wake up from your little black and white world. If you want to harvest something you have to plant it first. Having said that I am intersted in your feed back on my above question.

Alipapa do your homework, always heart is superior than reason. Ironically the two always agree with one another if you are doing the right thing. this is why religion and reason are compatible. If you mean we should use Western reason to smear our community you are flatly wrong. Supporting someone who insults his own Islamic and Somali communtiy is both agianst reason and heart. Islam teaches to refrian from smearing other people, reason, the other side of the coin tells us we should focus on solutions rather than ceebta qofka islaameed. Agian I am interested in your response to my above question.

Wow!!

I am beginning to believe in the all famous saying " Be careful of what you ask for". I am extremely saddened to see that my question has exposed so many opened wounds. I simply asked for you to list the misconceptions that many people have of Somalia and it's people, but to see so many of you display such horrid pessimism, truly breaks my heart. I haven't been able to go through all the "essays" that were posted, but I'm glad to see that some of them tried to stick to the point.

Ps. Keep hope alive. Moreover, learning how to spell won't hurt your cause, think about it.

Denial serves no purpose, admitting/recognising one's shortcoming will in the long-run contribute to a move from from CIIL to action.

I don't present/discuss an issue unless I know the facts..I have checked my sources...beleive me somalis have a bad reputation.......and the longer we deny, the more it is tarnished

I want to say everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, whether is positive or negative toward Somali community , I think it's unfair for some of you to judge something you obviously know little About, The problems that new generation face in western hemisphere is huge, to mention few languages barrier, culture, even adapting the system that these people govern themselves but most of the new comers strive to do the right thing Although majority Somalis got higher education they settle less than what they do not deserve for the sake of hardworking not Hardtalking like wanaagsane Said and the strong family value they have to support their respective families back home, The reason Somalia is healthy economically is those who do odd jobs in western countries and eager to help their fellow men, But most of you will say I know few bad Somalis(Jad eating, donut sitting ,uneducated creatures)who gave us bad names as Somalis and you will star making your self busy trying to find Somebody "bad" so you can tell us "look we have here few bad one's"
Such a position is intellectually dishonest and morally distasteful it serves encourage bigotry to flourish while, at the same time denying individual the basic human right to be who ever they want to be regardless of your sensibility, without shame in their fundamental identity, having said that I am not blind about some of us who follow stray dogs remember every society face that problem it's not something new to Somalis besides someone else reputation will not effect you good or bad in your life unless you love to enjoy the misery that other people encounter their daily life.in my conclusion Generalizing a whole community is nothing but a snap judgment its like saying " I am good but other Somalis are disgrace to be Somali" Give me break!!we are not in a same Ship
those of you who made this forums a place you can make fun your country man and your nation I will tell you this.Freedom of speech is one thing, the right to defame with Impunity is another thing
Finally I have a deep abiding faith and critical judgment of Somali people if they keep their eyes open not so much on one another but the biggest prize whatever that prize might be

Ice-man....a well written piece.....but based on emotional fictions/visions rather than facts bro.....

You mentioned that somalia is economically healthy..Is this true??????? I hope you mean the few coins we remit back home feeds the people...Somalia is bankrupt bro...it's economy , if there is any is in the hands of few warlords, chieftains, despots, zealots, morons etc...There is economic slavery and anarchy in somalia..If your vision for a better somalia is that one you call "healthy-economics"..I am afraid as you said we are in a different ship......

You are right freedom of speech should not be misused to defame someone.......If I and a few individuals, open mindedly argue/debate the mishaps facing somalis all over the world...and bring our shortcomings to the forefront......and u call that defamation......I don't know what to say:

I have not read anywhere I or someone else claimed that we are doing fine and others are loosers as you stated in your piece....What was clear, however, was that we wanted to discuss our reputations as somalis, and discuss how we could change the somalis image abroad.

Can you please tell us about the reputation of somalis????????

hello folks....well alot of critics.....it is not bad idea to be reminded of our failures as soceity but it would be wiser to back up your critism with possible solutions that make a platform to fix our current state....Indeed Somalis especailly somali male at large have failed and the subsquent loss of dignity and respect have thrown many into depressions......what these people need is a new begining and encouragements.....and please stop with generalization.....i don't think anyone wanna call a looser someone who works three jobs to provide for his folks back home...true he/she might not do anything to advance himself but than agian nobody in his right mind can sleep easily knowing your flesh and blood might be starving
i would critize those who had chance to go to collage and didn't sieze the moment....and about teenagers going wild....i don't think anyone wanna blame them without considering the contributing factors that shaped their state of mind....i would agree with Durgal....everybody must do his part to help the community....the future lies in the younger generation.....the least one could do is to encourage a teenager to finish high school and movitated them about collage.
Mr Wanaagsane....bro i agree with many of things that yu mentioned.....the bigger problem lies back home though.....education is our escape through this period.....we need to educate our young....unfortunately no somali is gonna make a personal sacrifes....i seriously dought anyone might wanna gonna back to invest in somali child....i have heard of few NGO's opened in somalia for orphans.....but nothing on large scale to help the somali children....if we need to succeed as society.....each one of us gotta to give up something in life.....it seems the young western educated somalis have alot of ideas though alot of them are self--absorbed but no one has the will or ambition to take leadership role and make something constructive.

WE ARE SOMALI'S AFTER ALL, THAT WOULD SUGGEST WE KNOW ALOT.

ALOT OF PEOPLE HERE ARE GETTING UPSET ABPUT SOME COMMENTS ME, WANAAGSANE AND A FEW OTHERS MADE.

I DON'T SEE THE REASON, WE ARE AFTER ALL SAYING THINGS WHICH ARE TRUE.
AND THE THING I BELEIVE UPSETS THESE FEW PEOPLE IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT'S TRUE TOO.

I AGREE OUR REPUTATION AS SOMALI'S IS TARNISHED DUE TO WARS.

BUT WE CAN'T KEEP BLAMING THE WAR.

ALOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMMENTED HERE ARE NOT EVEN IN SOMLIA.
SO I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY ARE USING THE WARS EXCUSE.
I KNOW MABE WHILE U WERE THERE THE WAR HAPPENED.

WE PEOPLE ARE IN PLACES WHERE WE CAN IMPROVE OUR REPUTATIONS, BUT ALL THE PEOPLE DO IS CLAIM BENIFITS, AND BUY JAAD WITH THE MONEY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO FEED THEIR CHILDREN WITH.

I HOPE THIS PERCEPTION OF OUR PEOPLE CHANGES, BUT ALOT ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT.

ONE THING WHICH SCARES ME IS THAT THIS NEW GENERATION MIGHT END UP AS THE LAST. I HOPE WE TRY AND CHANGE FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COUNTRY.

What is the point of this ping pong discusion?
Come on people! Are we discussing things for the sake of discussion or are we trying to generate ideas that will benefit somalis.
ISN'T THIS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF WHAT I SAID EARLIER, SMEAR SOMALI REPUTATION AND CONTRIBUTE NOTHING IN ADVANCING YOUR COMMUNITY'S WELFARE.
Did anyone read my question of what we should do with young somalis problems? It does not seems so. No one seems to care, but when it comes to TALKING, I SAID THIS AND THIS, all of sudden we have endless comments. More than anything else, all those who commented have shown inherent foolishness and concietedness to the point where the welfare of the community is overshadowed by the concern of appearing intelligent. It is sad fact which tears the fabric of somali heart and mind. Not even one person seems to capture the importance of that question. If anyone did we would have seen someone describing a common problem or particular expereince and how that problem was faced or needs to be faced.

Ok Ok Ok Ok......

I can see that many of you have endless passion- sometimes anger- towards this topic. I must admit that I am quite impressed with the intelligence and ambition that most of you have shown, however, you must realize that this is just a reputation, some true and some unfounded, based on someone else's assumptions. And just like my mommy said " Reputation is like glass, once broken it can never be the same" and to that I add " But, you can go to the mall and buy CRYSTAL" ha ha ha. But on a more serious note, this is a situation that all races and cultures have faced throughout history, We as Somalis have been forced to adjust to a new society, and many are still nostalgic for their previous way of life. And to tell you the truth, I am not ashamed of the way that Somalis as a culture have conducted themselves, on a broader scale we are well respected and admired. Please, don't look towards those who are into crime, foolishness, and are representing themselves in the worst way; Just believe that they too will one day adjust and look forward to a better future. So, with all that has been said and done, I believe that Somalis are on the better end of the spectrum where reputation is concerned.

P.S. Who dares to challenge this interesting discussion group and start a new interesting topic?

Dear Hibo,
I don't know what about myself makes you assume that I am a male, on the contrary I'm female. There was nothing wrong with what I said though, I mean if we are talking about stereotypes, that is the banner that we Somalis are currently waving, but that's not to say that all Somalis are the same, I am an exception to the rule you see. I thank my heritage for my looks and my out look on life, but there are many things that are of grievance. Many of our ideals aren't so blissful and if Somalia is so symbolic to you all, what led to its tragic fall from grace? Well it may be because it was not one thing that led to fire that proceeded the chain of events in the 1990s, this fire was burning for many years, or decades perhaps and it gave way to an irreversible chain of events. Now many things can be accounted for the shambles we now refer to as Somalia, and there shouldn't be one person or group of people to blame. All one should remember is the crescendo left behind by our beloved country's cry as it echoed through out.
After all that do you think people have learned their lesson? Nah, it's going to take a lot more strife to get Somalis to see each other as one I think. It's all a sad affair you see, so don't blame me of this opinion for surely you can see what I see. A nation full of scorn and hidden thorns is what Somalia is. You can be as optimistic as possible for hope is all we have with us, but do you think your fellow brothers and sisters share the same hope?

Sis, Somalia may not be as strong or as blissfull as it once was. Many of the other countries that are still under the spell of civil war are doing far more worst than we are. I do agree not many Somalis share my beliefs and vision of Somalia...not even my boyfriend let alone others. However what keeps me going is the believe in the saying..." A jouney of 10 million miles begins with the first step". I believe if I do my part in a small community than that community will surely call out for other communities.. n through that mission will be accomplishes. I may not live to see my dream materialise but certainly my heart will know I tried .. n stood for what i believed was rite. Martin Luther King for instance didn't live to see blacks freed as they r today... yet he had dreams n strived for it each day. What can possibly keep me from doing the same?
