Wednesday, November 29, 2000 - 05:34 am http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/islam/ MPAC(MUSLIM PUPLIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL) welcomes the introduction of the State Department's new website on Islam in the United States. As Secretary Albright notes, Islam is the fastest growing religious group in the country. The provision of accurate information about Islam and Muslims is necessary to dispel traditional stereotypes disseminated in the mainstream American media. A broader understanding of commonly-held values and of the sentiment of Muslim peoples can lead to the development of more informed and constructive U.S. foreign policy in the Muslim world. The site presents background information, including facts and figures on the Muslim population in America, media and academic articles about Islam in America, speeches and official texts recognizing the contribution of American Muslims, such as Senate Resolution 133, supporting religious tolerance toward Muslims in the United States and President Clinton's message to Muslims celebrating Eid al-Adha, as well as a listing of academic programs focusing on the Muslim world and useful related links. In her introduction to the site, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright says: "From our inception as a nation, religious pluralism has been part of the mosaic of American life. A rich part of that mosaic is our Muslim-American community, which comprises six million Muslims and is the fastest growing major religious group in America. Across our country, mosques, Muslim schools, community centers, organizations, and student networks are flourishing. Muslim-American chaplains are an important part of our uniformed military services. American scholars and journalists are devoting greater attention to the Muslim world, both here and abroad. Muslim-American activists and leaders are playing a much greater role in strengthening our understanding of Islam as a significant and positive force in American life…As you explore this site, I hope you will appreciate the diversity of Muslim life in the United States. Finally, as you use this Web site, I hope you will contribute in your own way to the dialogue between cultures and communities that builds our shared future."
