They were Cuban cigars smuggled in violation of the embargo and this particular batch was treated with a discontinued highly toxic pesticide that the Cubans were forced to use because of the tightening US embargo. It was either use the old stockpiled but dangerous chemical or crop failure. The irony of it all you say. If only he lifted the embargo!!!!!
