     | Tuesday, January 23, 2001 - 10:16 am My parents, throughout much of my child-hood, raised me blind to the clan system in Somalia. Often I would here adults speaking about this clan and that,and about who was hurting who, and would go to my parents asking what it all meant. My parents often replied: it's nothing just some silly things people talk about. And as I grew older, I took this sentiment to be true, and would play with kids not asking which clan they were from or whatnot. It was only when I reached my early adolescense that my parents described to me fully about all the details of our clan system. So by then, although I knew which clan I or my friends came from,to me it was inconsequential-just something silly people talk about. So why do we not raise all our children in this matter? A question: how were YOU raised in terms of your attitude toward the clan system.

Let us elect and vote for whose political agenda matches our vision. Let us shed clan politics and replace it with our common interests. We all know it will work. We all know clan politics doe not and shall never work except for the warlords. But to change, we must start with ourselves. We must confront the self, heal the self and clean the self within and depart from there in search of way to co-exist. We must embrace the diversity of our clans, the differences among our ethnic groups and regions. We must heal ourselves from guilt, hate, superiority and inferiority complexes. After dealing with all the hate within, we must seek forgiveness; and we must also forgive. Each and everyone of us must forgive and seek forgiveness by doing the right thing from now on. It is important for the journey of healing to confront our fear, to grieve our losses, and to lament our past. But it is also important to smile, to laugh, and to forgive, because the future is ours, if we have the courage to confront it. Without encouragement, support and approval, wars cannot be fought. But wars are fought: we encourage them, we support them and approve of them. Don't think I'm just pointing finger's here or taking side's because Women had their part in the war as well as men so...Let us not pretend innocence. Women must accept their share of violating the God-given rights of others. Since 1991, women have been igniting fires that burn lives still. Women have empowered and encouraged their husbands, their leaders and their militias to victimize their fellow countrymen. Women cry, they grieve, they remain weary - but do not learn the lesson- a lesson that has cost them more than they will ever know. I know I might seem like I'm speaking from experience but the truth is that I've never been to Somalia in my entire life these are just stories' I heard from people who fled the war. May Allah give us the courage to face up to who we are. That's all I have to say for now

| | Tuesday, January 23, 2001 - 12:26 pm again this is a silly thing people talk about. i used to be part of a certain somali clan and then i realised i can no longer be part of any clan. i called my dad and told him my decision that i am not longer part of the clan. He laughed at me. i was a teenage at the time and i was living with my aunt who was from another certain clan. My mother is darood and i am Hawiye, so i always dealt and grew up with my uncles from my mother's side. i then found out that some of my uncles felt uncomfortable to talk about clan politics when i am around. that hurt me a lot. i will find a way to excuse myself and let them continue their discussions. then i met this girl who was in the same situation like me. she too was being cared by her auntie and she was isaaq. we were classmates. i could not relate to my clans people becouse they too were busy and sometimes would go disrespecting my mother's people..... i thought about this a long time and then i called again my dad. i told him i am no longer a somali. my daddy this time laughed so hard and told me son whatever you decide is ok with me as long as you don't convert to another religion and become non muslim. i went to the masjid and i talked to the imam and said he should do something about clannism.he should include his friday sermon about my plight and others like me. if he doesn't do that i told him i would not come to the masjid anymore and i would pray with the pakistanis and listen qutba in urdu even if i don't understand it. guess what he started to tell me to be proud of my tribe and he too is my uncle and related to my mother. he told me god created tribes so people would know who you are. he went on to give a long lecture and i was not ready for it. i continued going to masjid and sometimes i go to the other masjids where i see people of different cultures and origins. i like the diversity cos i i feel comfortable there. i haven't yet renounced my somaliness and my religion. i know this is hard to do but i come to accept clan and now i go to my cousins and play games with them but they are not even one bit interested in knowing who they are and other somali tribes. i am not married yet but if i do i will find a non somali muslim girl so my kids will always appreciate being somali.

THE ONLY THING I COULD REMEMBER WAS THAT I WAS HAWIYE. HER OTHER FRIEND SAID SHE WAS TOO, AND THEN SHE ASKED ME WHAT KIND OF HAWUYE I WAS,SHE KEPT ASKING TILL THE LAST ROOT. THE FOUND IT AMUSING THAT I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT MY OWN TRIBE. AFTER I ASKED MY PARENTS WHO THEN TOLD ME NOT TO CONCERN MYSELF WITH THOSE KIND OF THINGS. AS I GREW OLDER I FOUND THERE WERE MANY PEOPLE WHO HATED ME BECAUSE I WAS HAWIYE, I MEAN I NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG TO THEM. MY FAMIY IS FROM ALL SOMALIA, I HAVE DAROOD COUSINS, ISAAQ COUSINS, AND OTHER HAWIYE TRIBES COUSINS. | | Friday, January 26, 2001 - 01:42 am well, reading the posted articles and views, has been 1 of the most intersting activities that i have participated today. so i sincerly thank the person who kicked off this extremely facinating and rather magnificent debate. personally, i'm a great beleiver of indivual rights, including expressing individaul views, what ever it might be. now, let tell you a little about my background.. i'm darood and i'm from the northern red sea region of Sanaag, i was born in the city of Erigavio and left the city and country when i was 6 years old. so therefore, naturally i have never expreicend war and misery at first hand , or at the battle grounds. however, a great number of my distaned relations and vey many of my clan mebers lost their lives and their livelihood, most of the times just 4 being Darood. my father and other members of my family also lived in the city of Hargaysa, and my father had a number of businesses there, befor 1986 everybody lived together in peace and harmony and father continued his business operations in the city, although he could have moved his business to where his fellow clan members live, which was sanaag and the rest of sanaag. but he choose no to, in the war my father lost all his businesses in the city and no less $250,000 were taken of him cash! from his personal savings caberd! anyway, my father was very lucky to have survived with his life, although of his relations, freinds and business partners lost their lives there. as a result of that, my father was forced to move us out of the country, march 87 was we lfet somalia. my father had other business in Mogadisho, and gain when the war irrupted there in 91, he lost EVERYTHING, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING THIS TIME! even his READING glasses would u belive they took it of him! in Mogadisho no less 10 of my fathers emediate family were sloughterd, these people have never been soldeirs nor politicians but simple civilians, who were infact contributing to the business of the city, offering jobs and livelihoods. again, my father was the luckiest man alive to have survived this vicous and utter most barbaric of battles of all. | | Tuesday, January 30, 2001 - 12:51 pm i am so thankful first and formost to ALLAH who have blessed me with decent parents. i love my parents so much that i will do whatever that will make them proud. i am muslim and somali. i was born and grew up in hamar. i have been sent to koranic school. i have been sheltered from hatred and all the ills of tribalism. after reading this posting i have realised how lucky i am/ i will also like to tell my fellow somalis to abstain even posting the tribal things in these forumss. we have a lot to exchange and learn from each other. i think we don't need to see this ngative thing. people are still caught up in it and as you can witness, it's just sad and discouraging. i am hawiye but that means nothing to me. i have no hatred in me and i pray every time toallah to heal our people and to make us mre civilesed , more islamic and more developed. iam sorry and i apologise if i offended any one. i am in school now and i have beautiful somali people at my school. we have a somali student association. we don't have tribes and all that negative stuff in our school. i hope every decent, educated and yooung somali to do his part to spread love and all that is positive.

But hey that is Somali men and women how we are strong. I ask myself how a Saudi Arabia girl or boy can cop if they had a civil war like we do. And sometimes i thank Allaha that we Somalis are 50% nomadic or semi-nomadic when this civil war took place otherwise the consequence will more damage than it is now. | | Friday, February 02, 2001 - 06:49 am I was just looking through the messages posted and could not help but wonder how we are doomed as Somalis because even at this age and day and despite everything we have all been through we still adhere to clanism. What hurts me more is to the degree someone of us will go with clanism. I belong to a clan but only use it to know where I stand in this world as Holy Quran teaches us. There are times a get tempted to hate a clan for what they have done to us but then again that would be going against the laws of ALlah SAW. Expecting clanism to be abolished would be asking for a miracle, we all know it has been ingrained in our system for too long. However if we use it postively it can change us and the situation Somalia is in for the better. I thought that our youngsters having moved away from Somalia would have the courage to fight what has destroyed us but I guess clanism is even more prevalent abroad then it is back home. I hope you will all realise that life is too short to spend time on hating a clan. Clanism has no benefits in this world or the hereafter. If anything it blinds us from the truth.

Still we relent about a past long lost, and trivial matters that should be left alone. Prescribed to us was mass cleansing, for who are we to lament when the All Might Creator is merciful and forgivable, instead we choose to ascribe increased amounts of hate and slander to one another. My people let us not drag this thing in the mud and come to the conclusion that there is no use trying to reconcile to build a new future, for we will always forsake one another. When we come to the stage when the essence of being Somali is lost, don't fret, for that was the consequence of our actions. No one to sow our seeds and keep our history alive, for the youth of the future are lost due to us.
