This is the second series of short stories ,,i hope you enjoy as much as you can,,I am not a good writer, but a promising one..the only way you can know if you write well is to subject what you write to the criticism of the people ,,I hope you read and let me know what you don't like ,,,thanks..

The Virtue

Naima trusted her husband and believed everything he told her. She was an honest girl who
was deeply attached to her family. When Elmi told her that he was going to do an assignment
That day in another city, she was right to believe him that he would soon be back for her.
But time proved her wrong. He never came back even when she was in a critical stage of her
pregnancy.
She tried to call him but the phone number he gave her was wrong number and everytime she dialled that number, a woman would answer telling her that she doesnt know Elmi. She even pleaded with the woman to seek a man by the name of Elmi in the city.
As time went by, the two woman became freinds always calling each other on the phone for news of Elmi.
Elmi married Naima four years ago and eversince then life has been going smoothly for them. Naima never had doubts about her husband and was always there for him by his side.
"I don't know what happened to him" she told the woman on the phone -"Elmi would never have done this to me, something horrible must have happened to him".
"Men sometimes disappear" the other woman told her "but again would return when they realize that they did wrong".
Would he return, my Elmi? she asked herself in silence. Perhaps he would if he is alive, she convinced herself.
This morning though she felt the pain in her womb which meant that the baby would soon be born.
But she had no one to turn to for help. She wasn't even able to afford to buy nappies for her coming baby.
The hospital wasn't far from where she lived and she decided to check in.
There was a long queue and she has to wait for a while. She was a strong girl who endured hardships and no wonder when the pain started agin while she was in the queue, she bit her lips and tried to endure.
But there he was, the doctor, standing in front of her.
" come on in " he told her as if he read the pain in her face.
she obediently followed him to the examining room.
He took the card from her and read all about her medical history.
"Would you please lie down on that stretcher " he told her.
But she was unable to move. Between her feet, the doctor saw the blood and he called the nurses for help.
She was immediately transferred to the delivery ward.
Late that night while she lay in her bed, the doctor returned in and told her she had a baby girl.
Her face radiated with happiness. She tried to stand up and see her baby girl, but the doctor told her that the bay would be brought here soon.
Then she remembered Elmi and how at this time she badly needed him.
"Oh God, why are you punishing me" she cried out as tears rolled down her delicate cheeks.
" I bought some gift for the baby" the doctor told her.
He handed her a large backage and told her that she should rest for now.
She thanked the doctor and appreciated what he did for her.
"But you should be staying two days here in the ward as we need to do a little more examination of the surgery that you underwent". he reminded her, which meant that she shouldn't contemplate leaving now.
"Anyone you would like me to call to tell them that you are here?". the docteor asked her politely.
"No, doctor, thank you". she replied.
He was taken aback by what she said and went further coming closer, he asked her humbly,
"Even the father of the baby?".
"I am sorry to ask you these silly questions but of curse you need some one to take care of you and help you".
She then bursted out and told him of Elmi and what happened to him.
"Still , you havent heard of him?" the doctor asked her finally.
"Yes, i havent".
" Doc" she said.
"Perhaps you could help me with one call to a freind".
"Surely"
She gave him the number of the woman whom she had befreinded through the wrong phone number which Elmi gave her.
The following day, the doctor told her that he contacted the woman and that she will be visiting her tommorow.
"She is coming here ?" she asked the doctor.
"Yes, she and her husband will be coming here to see you and your baby"
Naima somehow felt happiness in the sense that she had finally a caring freind, Qadiijo, who was coming from far to see her and her baby.
If all people were like her, she thought.
In the meantime while she stayed in the hospital, the doctor took care of her and her needs.
It was as if he knew whatever she was thinking.
This doctor can read the mind, she smiled as she held her baby close to her breast.
"Doctor, i don't know how to thank you. You really helped me..um,,um,,umm"
She murmured, and said finally,
"Thank you Doc for everything"
"For honor's sake, i want to call my baby-girl with any name you like" she told him.
"Do you have a daughter, Doc". she asked him.
"How nice of you!, no, i dont have children "
"My wife died in a car accident three years ago. She was pregnant too.".Then the tragedy of the doctor started to unfold .
She fely pity for the doctor. Naima realized for the first time that human sufferings can be found in every aspect of life, whether you are a proffesional or junior, poor or rich.
"I used to think that mine was more tragic but today, i have learned otherwise".
"Doc, what was your wife's name?"
Samiira" he told her.
"baby-girl, you are now Samiira" she said as she took the bay in both her hands.
"I will see you then, Naima" the doctor bid he farewell and left.
Somehow Naima was touched by the Doctor's tragedy. Indeed it was a tragedy far more painful than hers.
The man somhow had a sense of understanding, always kind, and repectful.
That evening, the doctor brought some specially cooked food from his home, and he surprisingly sat down with her. They dined together and talked on and on. Each telling his version of the tragedies they had seen.
Both admired each other as they bode each other good night.

Naima sat down alone in her bed waiting for her visitors who were coming to see her. She was uneasy and never felt such uneasiness before.
"Yusuf and Qadiijo, please would you come forward" the nurse announced as she led them to Naima's room.
Elmi had no idea what was waiting for him, nor was Qadiija aware of the fact that Elmi was the husband of Naima.
There she is, the nurse told them as she retreated back and locked the room.
Naima was looking at her baby and stood up to face ang greet her new visitors who took the trouble to come such a long distance to see her and her baby-samiira.
Qadiijo hugged and kissed Naima.
But what shook Naima was the sight of Elmi in the room. She was speechless, incapable of speaking, motionless, unable to move.
"This is my husband, Yusuf" Qadiijo introduced, anaware of the atmosphere.
"Nice to meet you Elmi" She finally had the courage.
"You have children, Yusuf" asked Naima trying to torment him and get the truth from him.
"I mean , you and Qadiijo"
"Six, my dear, four girls and two boys" Qadiijo responded.
"What a blessing" Naima added.
"Have you heard from your husband, my dear" asked Qadiijo.
"Yes, in fact, his body was recovered, mutilated somewhere"
"My his soul rest in peace" Qadiijo said honestly praying the poor Elmi who was killed.
All the love she had for Elmi were untanggled one by one setting Naima free of Elmi's spell. She no longer felt anything for him. After all, she thought, he was a human who could err.
Qadiijo handed the gifts she brought with her and left the room, bidding Naima farewell.
Elmi during his visist never uttered one word. He was caught red-handed.
What arouse the symapthy of Naima was the sincerity of Qadiijo and the love she had for her husband.
A family of six shouldn't have to break, she told the doctor. That is why i didnt want to tell Qadiijo.
"You are a complicated lady" the doc teased her.
"You are supposed to be discharged today, so be ready and back all your things,. I will take you to your home.".
"The fact is, Doc, since i am complicated lady, I have no-where to go"
and by the way, I am in love this time"
"I will obliged then as a matter of honor to take you to my home" the doctor said softly as he kissed her and took baby-Samiira in his hands.
"You bet!" she said...............................By In_Love_4_Ever

A very nice story with moral for all of us. But can I ask you who inspired you for the Niama character or was it just a figment of your imagination?

Keep it up.
