MO-man

Every Eid I take it upon myself to take my family out-seeing that much of my time is spent at the University amid studies, friends and such, I immensely enjoy myself during these outings. This time around I chose to take them to the local cinema for the opening of a comedy (I don't care to mention the name it being a horrid film). Thus, hungry for some entertainment, I found myself amused, amid my parents consternation and the children's shock, as we stumbled upon a couple-quite an odd couple I must say. Nestled in a corner seat in the greatly lit theater hallway was a young Somali man (in his late teens maybe 20 or 21 at most) with what appeared to be a chinese girl of equal age-both were making out passionately- rubbing and pulling on clothes and such, oblivious to a group of Somali people gawking at them.
"Waryaaa!!"The cry was much like a roar in the african savannah and attracted more than a couple of stares-it had come from my father. I must admit I could not help but laugh, albeit quietly to myself-the young man jumped, much like a lazy officer caught offguard by his commander, his face aghast with clear surpise.
"Nacalaatullaa..."
My father had taken three strides toward the boy, the girl still lying astride the bench, mouth agape with surprise.
"War waxaan day! Abdi-Saalim?!
"Hooyo..A..aabo..adeer...ah...haa!"The boy stumbled upon his words-his mother nor his father were present this fine day-but we certainly knew him. Yes, it was indeed Abdi-Saalim, the young man who'm I occasionally played soccer with and whom, it was gossiped, would marry some Amino or other-Amino's father being a good friend of the family.
"Laa illaaha illallaahi muhammudu arrasuulullaah..."Oh how I knew what was to come next-remembering such exclamations of anger from my rather tumultuous childhood. My father proceeded to tell the young man of the disgrace and disgust he felt at such a horrid sight all the while pointing back at the girl-she was now sitting up fixing her clothes. My father continued a one sided dialogue that lasted what felt like an hour-all five of us standing uncomfortably behind him. My little brother was not one to let an oppurtunity pass, getting in few words of his own: "uf, ufeey.." to no one in particular.
"Hmm..I guess you no want jiggy jiggy no mo?"We had all but forgetten about the girl, who was now standing a distance from us, fumbling with a lip-stick. No response came, abdi, now looking down at his shoes, was clearly not at ease with my father's fixed gaze. A few seconds of silence followed before I discreetly shook my head, and in no uncertain terms, indicated for her to go, seeing that this situation was now getting quite out of hand. Giving a shrug, she waddled off toward another direction of the theater, occasionally looking back for a stare or two. To make a long story short, Abdi, my father proclaiming him to be old enough to account for his decisions, could do as he will-his parents would not be told, but a stern and indeed ominous warning was what he was left with-as well as pointed stares in the xalaal store. But poor abdi, and I say poor for the young man is indeed poor in judgement-this was certainly not the last time we would "stumble" upon him.
Coming out of the theatre later that night, one could make out "uf, ufeeey, uf" amid a babble of conversation.
