All my life i had felt i did not belong anywhere.I saw people from many nationalities and watched them talk pride of their country and their sense of place in this world.I was happy for them, they knew what they have had.I never knew my coutry nor will i ever.I was left enjoying other tell good memories about their country.Imagine,a country of your own.By nature of my age,i suppose this happens to many youth like me.The older generation can reason the probability of Once having a nation;a country called Somalia!
Growing up in North America is not something i chose but was given.I understand in another point of view i should be thankful of the oppotunity i have thus achieved, just by moving to North America. In another point of view,i resent that fact that the choice was not mine to make.I really dont know what it is like to walk on the soil of Somalia. The smell of the wind or the sight of the beaches during sun rise. All this i hear from my elder relatives. They know much and i know less. Why?'Special circumstances' reads on my parents Assylum application.A Refugee status! Is that all i am worth? An escaped casualty from Somalia?
I once wrote a poetry about soimalia in my school,it was a sad window open to my soul. Those words came from my heart. As i was congratulated and praised, but deep under my Happy face,i hide my agony. An agony that is larger than my life.A sense of not belonging to a place i can call home.My family is getting sworn this summer to complete the 'Special circumstences' application.A citizenship application. Can i finaly be Happy to belong somewhere? To become an American. To be sworn to Love this country with all my heart. To belong somewhere. When would i tell a story about my country. Can i forget Somalia?Did i ever know Somalia?Would i finaly belong somewhere?

Katra.

I don't like it when Americans ask me where I am from ? I tell them that I am from Cleveland. Somehow, they ask again, "U sound different." In other words, you are a foreigner. I have stopped explaining to them that I am from Somalia. This is because: (a) they don't like foreigners (b) the Cleveland Public Schools system did not hire me to be a Geography. I once told a person that I was from Mogadishu. He said is the that near Wakeegan, Illinois ? Yes, I replied. 10 miles down the road from Wakeegan.

Hehehe, Baba, that's so funny!!! yeah, Americans are completely lost when it comes to geography...
I know, coz I am from Norway. And they think that Norway is the capitol in Sweden, but do they know where Sweden is?? No way josé! They eat our salmon, use our oil, have heard about the vikings... Go on a cruise on one of Norways many cruise ships over there, like SS Norway, The Legendary Norway, Norwegian Majesty etc... and they say; Oh, I thought it was just a silly name, oh, do you build the ships too, really...hahaha! They talk about the middle east and the Oslo agreement, and about the Peace Prize, but they don't know a heck about what Oslo is.... Maybe some kind of cheese?? SAY CHEESE, GUYS! ;-)

American really need to learn Geography.Once two african american co-workers asked me if they could drive to Africa in time to catch their favorite show jerry springer.I was like...say what?

I said No man ...you need a passport and plane to reach there.Takes you more that 15 hours.

they say...."Oh my bad.......where can i buy the passport?
