| | Tuesday, March 13, 2001 - 11:48 am Teen stabbed to death in club Two more injured in knife attack on dance floor Bob Mitchell PEEL/HALTON BUREAU CHIEF A 16-year-old Toronto youth was stabbed to death early yesterday at a notorious Mississauga nightclub that's expected to be sold and shut down next month. Guled Mohamud, of Dixon Rd. was pronounced dead at the Trillium Health Centre's Mississauga site. Two other Toronto teens are recovering in hospital from knife wounds after the attack on the dance floor of the Abyss Night Club. Mohamud, a Grade 11 Kipling Collegiate student, and the two others were attacked in an unlicensed area of the club as music blared at an all-ages event. About 1,500 people were in the club at the time. Police have spoken with dozens of patrons, but they're appealing for others to come forward with information. ``We believe all three knew each other,'' Peel homicide Inspector Tom Slinger said. ``We haven't determined if they were stabbed when they came to their friend's aid or just stabbed.'' Last night, dozens of friends, family and members of Toronto's Somali community gathered at Mohamud's home and neighbouring apartments. Mohamud moved to Etobicoke with his family from Ottawa about seven months ago, said family friend Mire Iro. The family - with nine boys and one girl - emigrated from Mogadishu, Somalia, about 10 years ago. ``He was a bright young man. Very good at school. He was always smiling and loved to play basketball,'' said Iro. ``This is a tragedy. It's hard to believe something like this could happen in Toronto.'' Family friend Nasser Mahoud was with Mohamud the day he was killed. ``He had plans to go to engineering school one day. . . . He loved to play with computers and he would use my computer to work on his school assignments,'' Mahoud said. It was the first fatality at the Abyss, which has been plagued with drug incidents, liquor infractions and fights since it opened in 1994 in the Wolfedale Rd. and Burnhamthorpe Rd. industrial area. Police say they've had concerns about the club for some time. Nearby merchants have complained about finding used condoms, hypodermic needles and broken beer bottles on their properties. A local real estate company confirmed yesterday the site, now under power of sale, is expected to be sold by next month. The new owners intend to turn it into a light manufacturing facility. Although no motive has been determined, Slinger confirmed investigators are checking whether the knifings were gang-related. No weapon has been recovered. ``We've been advised that some of the people involved may be affiliated with the Crips and Bloods,'' Slinger said. ``But we haven't determined whether this is a gang issue or just a coincidence.'' Despite private security and paid duty officers, there were two other serious incidents last weekend outside the Hawkestone Rd. club. Early Saturday, an 18-year-old woman was dragged 15 metres when a passenger in a car grabbed her arm. The victim received cuts and bruises. Two people were charged.
