its true Siad ordered the Execution of this Ulumau'diin Elders. Many people who were part of that Goverment are now claiming to be the NEW Saviours of Somalia. C/qassim Salat, this guy never said anything about the crimes against humanity commited by Siad Barre, he did give out any apology and has not taken any resposibility for his part in that Siad government.

Now this is the question, how can you trust anyone who has not taken resposibility for his past actions ???

How can anyone such as him (C/qassim and others)be trusted when he was so blind to see all the crimes commited by Siad Barre.

I would rather trust Hussein aideed hundred times over this Salat Guy. He is only after his own selfish interests. He does not care about Somalia, he is part of the problem.

If you judge someone by his record, then C/qassim Salat's record is rotten. He has too many skeletons in his closet.

He has nothing to offer as a Solution.

I think some of the information here is spurious. I find it highly suspect that the order to kill anyone came from the Soviet Union. They were unlikely to be directly involved in the internal affairs of the Somali state. Siad Barre didn't need anyone to tell him who to execute and who not to, he was able to figure that out all on his own.

Second, the Somali people did not force Siad Barre to terminate the alliance (which was terminated in 77-78, not 75), Barre terminated it when, after his invasion of new Soviet client Ethiopia, the Soviets had to make a choice. Ethiopia being larer and richer, was the selection, so Somalia got cast off. The Soviets of course tried to keep both doors open but that proved impossible.

Lastly, since the Siad government ran the country for more than 20 years, how do you plan to find people with government experience if you preclude all those who were members of the Siad government? Salats record may be questionable, but there are only so many choices out there.

<Salats record may be questionable, but there are only so many choices out there. >

I think that is very interresting point. We Somalis need to understand that we have to give up something in order to get a better one. I am not pro-Abdi-Qasim but I think If he can bring peace to Somalia we should give him a chance.

As for the above title, I am not sure if that started the Somali civil-war that seems to end the existance of any legitimate Somali government.
It that executipon that I heard many times, had been the roots of our today's problem, I am sure the situation would be different today.

Mr Mad Mac ..Siyad Barre did order the execution with highly influenced from the former Soviet Union..no doubt about that..secondly read the topic carefully 1975 Somalia had drought crisis the story began and 1976 the killing happen..and from that time the former dictator his relations with the Somali public severely damage and the former Soviet relations started collapsing ,and 1977 he waged the war with the Ethiopians and the former Soviet Union allied with their new student Mingistu of Ethiopia ..

I don't dispute anything you said (other than again, I am highly suspect that the Soviets cared one way or another who Siad Barre killed, as long as he maintained control. If these men were a threat to Siad he would have killed them anyway. He didn't have a problem with killing. And if they weren't a threat, then the Soviets wouldn't have cared about them either). But I would maintain that ultimately, what pushed Barre (and hence Somalia) out of the Soviet camp and into the American one was the war in Ethiopia. No war and Siad would have likely stayed the course with the Russians.

While we're on this subject. Can anyone tell me more about the backgrounds (pre-1993) of Hussein Bod and Abdi Hassan Awale? I really don't have much information on either of them and am curious what they used to do.

Mad Mac:

It is amazing how a man of such bottomless ignorance and awareness like you could be awarded a commission in the most powerful armed force in the world.

Having quoted Santayana's famous dictum, why do you contradict yourself in the very next sentence by telling us to put everthing in the past? Putting everything in the past is the reason we have anointed one of Siyaad Barre's most enthusiastic butchers to lead us into the new millennium.

I agree wholeheartedly with the man who started this topic that Somalia's problems started with the killing of the 13 clerics by Siyaad Barre in the seventies. Or more accurately because of the Somalis public's indifferent reaction to this most savage and barbarous act perpetrated by the odious and hell-destined hyena Siyaad Barre and his henchmen(Stand up and be counted Cabdiqaasim Salaad Xassan).

Siyaad Barre and his murdering acolytes took notice and encouragement when the whole Somali nation took it in their complacent stride as one outrage after the other was commited against our religious and cultural traditions:

The only people who made a principled stand and opposed the beast were these courageous men of religion who then paid the ultimate price with their lives.

Siyaad Barre and his henchmen(stand up Moscow-trained Cabdilqaasim)

1-Brought to our land the godless, Marx and Lenin-worshipping Soviet Bolsheviks

2-Brought in equality between men and women in direct opposition to the teachings of the good book.

3-Murdered 13 holy men who resisted these outrages against our faith.

Now Mr Cabdilqaasim, Siyaad Barre's eternal, never to be replaced, scarcely ever to be curbed minister wnats to lead our nation. Can this man give us assurances that he will not hang from the nearest tree our religious leaders on a future day when they might disagree with him?

The fact is every Somali is willing to swear blind loyalty to any political leader belonging to his own tribe no matter how murderous, corrupt, brutal and unjust that leader may be.

That kind of opportunism is what has laid our country low.

And you watch as, soon, I will be assailed from all corners by the descendants of Sade Mareexaan crying foul that I have desecrated the memory of The Great Helmsman Siyaad Barre, AAbbaha ummada Soomaliyeed.

Governo,
The killing of that ten innocent ppl who were muslim -learners was certainly horroundious crime against both Islam and humanity.

May allah subxaana watacaalaa reward them paradise.

Mad Mac

I agree we need to move on and we do not have much selections.

Xoogsade,
I am mareexaan and I could not careless what you say about Siad barre. But your last sentence tells all about you. You have not answer the topic to give your account of the title but your madness about qabil drove you here.

Mareexaan are one of large somali clans, they live throughout somali terrotory from Ogaden to Kenya as well as the proper somalia. Siyad Barre belonged to that clan, however, he was a Somali president who had his very bad point and his good points. So, if someone wants to commont about that, it is none of our bussiness.
But when ppl like you who benefited from the region when mareexaans were scapegoated, talk like that, it is a reflection of the Somali clan mentality.

I was born in Mugadisho and our family were there for generations and my family could give you a good insights of how the somalis equely came to muqadisho and other cities and get educated, get jobs and new life. period only handfull of the somalis were going to schools and higher education.

I am not saying the government was good, I think, it was very bad one but it had some good points. and also its failure not to succed or not to be corrected has to do a lot of our somali quilties that is manifested from 1991.
now, we blame the Us intervetion, we blame the Islamic courts, we blame abdi-qasim. where are we going ? you tell me.

Yours sister Hudo

What I said is the Somalis should not forget the past, they should put it behind them. Not the same fucking thing. Learn to read dickhead.

And who would you annoint to lead you into the next millenium? Who has some experience in governing that has a squeaky clean record? Hell, that's hard to find in a "normal" country, let alone one that's suffered a 20 year dictatorship and then been ripped apart by 10 years of civil war. Face it, no matter who ended up as the "president", and I use the term loosely, there'd be lots of criticism. Perhaps old Abdi has learned something from the past. Or perhaps not. I'm still in the wait out mode on this one.

Xoogsade, you love being the critic, but I have yet to hear any constructive comments from you. What practical solutions do you have to deal with Somalias current political impass? What do you recommend?

Hudo
A lot of good points there. Man I miss Hamer. Where di you live? I spent most of my time in Medina.

This is the ONLY viable solution...

A war Crimes Tribunal for Somalia. Plain and simple.

If they committed No crime while in power then they got nothing to Fear.

If the U.N can have one for Burundi and another for Bosnia, why not Somalia ????????????

Who would arrest your perps??? There's a problem. Everyone is guilty, there are no innocents, at least none with any power. To get power you had to be a ruthless SOB. So where does that leave you? The UN has no power in Somalia. no ability to arrest people. Who's going to bring all these criminals, large and small, before the court?

The War criminals are all over the place not only in Somalia. Mad Mac your thinking is at times troubling. You seem to think shallow at times. There are Many of this war criminals who are now living in the U.S (Virginia, Columbus, San diego, e.t.c) yet they have been granted safe heaven. Is it because maybe (if they are arrested) they will expose the dirty hand of Uncle Sam ?

This cirminals are not confined to Somalia, they travel all over the place why is the U.N not after them ! why not indict them, just like they did Milosovic (sp)The U.N has no power to arrest in Yugoslavia but that did not stop them from indictting the War criminals there did It ??????

Why the double standards ????

Somalia is haunted, untill those criminals are brought to justice there will be no peace.

Saxib, I am a student of the school of real-politik. The reality is no investigations have been done, Somalia is and has remained a backwater. If YOU really wanted to do something to bag war-criminals outside of Somalia, i suggest you work with like minded fellows to put together a list of folks (and witnesses to their crimes) who have committed crimes and lobby the UN to set up a commission to deal with it. That's what happened in the case of Bosnia. The UN is you and me. These things gain momentum becuase the people of the respective countries lobby to make them happen. Stop talking about "they" and recognize "they" are you.
