Dear My fellow Somali Students in UK.

I have meaning to initiate this topic for quite sometime now, but timing was never apropos.

The topic is the one I have mentioned as the title of this posting, I think there is a greater need to unify the stem of the new Somalis in the west in general, but I thought that would be our next step forward.

As a young Somali erudite " not quite certain that I call myself that…" I identify that we "Somali students in UK" need to have one body that represents us all. I am certain that great preponderance of you out there will accede with me in this matter. As we all aware of were in ominous saga that can be altered if we combine our intellect and Manpower " MAN not as gender wise, those of you who hold of extreme views in gender equality please do not be exasperated".

Some of us know there was an attempt from young well meant group of Somali students who wanted to create this immaculate deed, but due to some of their shortcomings they have failed. I believe, we can enliven what they planted, these seeds need to be cultivated in a very careful manner, we shall learn from their inadequacy and flaw.

If you are in favour in reviving USSU "UK SOMALI STUDENTS UNION" then please do email me at : mahir@lobbyist.com

Thank you for your time please reflect on this well meant deed.

Yours

Mahir

Mahir,

This is very touching thing. I can feel your compassion about the subject in question, I have met some of those initaiters of the UK Somali students Union, I have met Anisa who was a member of excutive commitee.

I think we have to take it from where they have left it.

I am up for it now.

My old friend Mahir,

I am delighted to see my fellow honourable friend Mahir is willing to undertake such a mammoth task that failed a hefty gents and ladies from all over UK. I suppose he believes enthusiastically that he has what it takes to learn from their blunder and if that is the case then he have an advantage.

My dear Mahir, I warn you this needs a lot of careful planing, and without a committed fellows you bound to experience an oversight. But, this warning should not stop you taking this precarious task. I want you to succeed it and I would like to witness a fruitful union that encompasses all the Somali students in UK.

If this becomes reality then I shall be entranced and my delight would be infinite for you and the Somali students who will make this long craved dream to come to true.

Good luck with your laboriously abstruse task.

I shall call you insha Allah later tonight.

I like the idea, I am also a student in the UK, but just like T-girl said I have never heard of a somali union that was based in the UK, yours was the first.

Could actually tell me more about this union, like what are the main objectives? where is going to be based? is it nation wide? what facilties or activities are you willing to provide? etc.

Mahir, Sophist and DrWho

All 3 of you are one and only one person, so can you stop this stupidity.

Is people like you why we can't have a functional student society in the UK. You try to haold yourself in such high position you don't have time and effort for other people.

There a lot of young willing students in the UK, and i personally think if they did not obstacles placed in front of them by ppl like you they would succeed.

You are the one who is holding back the students in the UK to establish themselves, because your an ELITIST, QABILIST AND SELF-CENTERED( not arrogant because you have no style)

Please reply to me by
1- not taking the mick ( critising) my English
2- without a dictionry in front of you
3- with honesty

We as the younger Somali students in the UK would love to have a association, which would cater for the somali ppl in general. Its purpose would be

1-meeting place for Somali students
2-help for those who are trying to get into uni
3-Arena for intellectual debate
4-board for discussing student problems

Thats all i have to say, sorry if i offended anyone.

Student you have point. I tell you one thing though, our culture needs to be changed If we are planning to get somewhere. Anyone who assumes responsibility must come through it or else one thing gets proven, the incompetancy of those who are involved in it. Why Somali student organizations fail most of the time? It is becuase the right people are not there. Either the professional screw up hassles more than those who can change things or the right people are not ready to expose themselves to what this resonsibility entails. In our university we have this guy the president who is slow and can't get the job done, but I bet he never asks himself " what the hell am I doing here" in the end he seems very confident about his record. In short, what separates intelligent people from the rest is the ability of Intelligent people to see what constraint does the environment impose on them. These constraints can come in different forms: resisting personal development by being ambitious and over-confident, not developing a keen sense of what surrounds you, not having the urge to improve constantly, not being able to grasp how one fits the whole. Is there a bigger priority which directs smaller ones? These and other characteristics will be detrimental whether an individual or organization becomes succussful. Somalis say LIBAAX NIN AANA AQOON BAA NEEF KA DHIGTA.

Student you reason and articulate well, but I think there is one important question that needs to be answered, which also addresses your concerns, why Somalis in general fail? This is simple but powerful answer, we build organizations before we develop ourselves. Can a villige build a hopital before it trains doctors? This is not to say that we should wait until we have enough college graduates. Rather,we need to experiment different ways of developing ourselves, and how individual students fit into the whole. This can only be achieved if we individaully undertake the task of developing ourselves. Does it work?

I have prepared this detailed project where we give a considerable emphasis in waking up the intellect of young Somalis who are likely to succeed but some how seem to be disorganized and have not yet developed an interest in any thing. We rely on several methods: selected readings, films, historical interpretations, making sense of the environment we live in, informal weekend discussions, unplanned small talks at Cafe. Eventhough we are at expremental age we still like our chances. This expedition is part of bigger project where the final goals is shore up a cultural, political, and economic change in Somalia. We simply want to make Somali race proud of itself in a productive way. We welcome anyone who is hurt by our tarnished image as well as the suffering of Somali people.

This is just a comment.

To student and durgaal i agree with your points all the way:). For what seems like forever to me, i have been hearing about the setting up of the unions Maahir is talking about. Though, its great in theory, the practice is barely there:(.

But guys, we university level somalis arn't that bad. i know studying is hard but the major problem lies with the younger one's. Any efforts, should be towards helping the young ones prepare for university.

University students know what they are on and where they want go in life (the ones at my uni at least). The younger generations, and i am speaking from experience don't.

The solution is a lot easier then U think.... we'll get there some day (sooner then later)InshaAllah:)

P.S whats with the language? Queens command or what?

Amina, you are right the focus should be these kids, high school people, but we got to be realistic about what we can do and how many people we can reach, besides you cannot change a whole culture. If we are going to be successful then we need to be highly selective about who we reach and why? For instance, we should
use the same concept, train doctors before you build hospital. This is the tricky part, do you train everyone in the village or do you focus on those who you think have the potential to succeed. You have got to remember that you don't have enough resources to reach everyone. And becuase of this we started talking to smart and motivated students. Every Saturday afternoon I invite over four to five high school students and I expose to them some highly constructed ideas about their history, what somali high school graduate can realistically expect in the Western world, and how things really work. Luckily, all the sessions I have conducted so far were really good and most students responded very well. My plan is to reach out 40 seniors before they graduate and give them glimpse of what the "real world" is. I am doing this becuase I have to do it, it is part of a bigger project that I am engaged in.

Mahir, thanks for bringing up this issue. However, I think you're taking it to the wrong direction. It seems to me you're just reinforcing the traditional premise that we Somalis operate. We are always eager to start things from scratch, instead of trying to improve the existing ideas,
situations and projects.

Is it something that we are conditioned to? Well, I don't think so but obviously, we can't get away from.

I personally think the founders of STU haven't done a great job and they just slipped back to the old line of thinking---trying to do different things at one time, which of course back fired. What I found it quite disgraceful is that they even deleted the website, just cos some sort of irrational disagreement. To their credit, however, they came up with this idea and they should be given a status for that.

But this doesn't mean they own the organisation and if they can't do the job, they should let others do it. So we Somali UK students have a right to demand them to hold a meeting and take things from there. We should listen what they say and what needs to be done, and when possible, take measures on the spot to improve things. These signs speak by themselves to the honest-minded man that the final scope of creating a more mature and well working society, is us and our interests.

Ps. let's just reason things rationally and stop endorsing everything that someone initiates with out a real deliberation.

"What a great idea to have uk somali student society"

This is majority of the response that i have read so far, and it sounds extremly wonderful idea.

I think the general consensus is that we are in need of a body like this, in which we can discuss our needs and also the way in which we can help our young bros and sisters.

I don't wana be pessimistic but what makes think you gona succeed where others have failed??

am not pessimists (all doom and gloom) but realist.
how we gona structure??

hiya all,

ok this is a great debate!...i'm not gonne take any body's side.... by condeming mahir or anyone else!
because that wont do any good... and anyway i thank mahir sincerly 4 kicking off this topic! thanx man!

since the younger students r being emphesized more particularly on......then, i like 2 express my opinion regarding this issue speaking from a younger student's prespective!

like many others have mentioned b 4 me..... the need for such an organisaion is extremlly needed and very very essential!

we as younger students would appreciate exchanging views and ideas with older more educated & more intellect bro's and sisters....

we would love 2 hear their ideas regarding many issues such as higher education, careers, somali history, tribelism, somali politics, the future of somalia, living in the west and how 2 tackle the obstacles (eg; racism, social affairs, vacancies etc..) and general topics such as RELIGION, culture, somali & english litreture, arts, science, music , theatre and movies.

believe it or not but many youngsters will actually r facinated with the above mnetioned topics....or perhaps will like 2 know more about them.
including my self & others that i know!
________________________________________________

however, we can sit in here 4 ever and just chat bout this & that....... but, i think(like others have sayed) we really need 2 start reaserching & planning as to how we can realise this ambitious idea!

i know & u know that it can b done...... and that support is widely avilable(from the goverment& other concerned bodies)..........

but, come on somalis lets 4 real start this and really make dream come true....again(like others have sayed) this will have more than substantial long term benefits..... just imagine how many students will b inspired by their fellow older students 2 do their best.... we can learn so much from each other!.........& we can teach so much to so many others!

i once heard that it only takes 2% 2 change a whole population........ for better or for worse!

lets hope and pray 2 allah the all mighty that we can b the good 2% that will change the nature of this nation(somali) 2 the better.
_________________________________________________

enough talking lets get some pen's & some papers and lets start brain-storming the task & jotting down some ideas!

personally i think this organisation...
1- should b based in london since its a the capital...and we have greatest number of students in here!

2-some kind of a web-site should b designed so...students can actually start putting down their ideas..... may b even leaflets should b produced and spread all over the palces where somalis gather like wembly, southal etc...2 spread awarness of this up & coming body!

3-those who really wann take in charge of this task, should perhaps start seeking support from students... by perhaps attending & visiting some of the schools, colleges and universites.... because when a potentail body is enjoying a tangible support is when the governemt starts helping out aswell.... may u should also collect the signitures of the intersted students!

that is all i can think of for now... but i'll b in touch if i have anymore...i think this is a first step...and i'm counting on u all 2 participate & contripute in this information gathering and brain storming session!

many heads r better then 1..............

my respect & deep admiration goes out 2 all the good , intellegent & dedicated brothers & sisters.

goodbye.

Student and his pedestrian battalion,

It really greatly fascinates to say the least that this lad would come up here and defame the name Mahir by associating it with very revile actions. I think contorting what I stand for will not get you there. If you have any asperity towards Mr Drwhoo then I suggest that you directly contact him and deal with him in person, I can not see why yu need to take this proverbial Somali way of " hadii aad dooneysid inaad qof udhameyso Qofkale ayaa loosoomaraa". I think if this is the case; then you loathe me great deal young man/woman. What I see is pure embittered anger to this guy Drwhooo and you painted with same brush because you are aware " from his last posting, when he said he would call" that he is a friend!. It is really ludicrous of you to base your all argument on such feeble ground.

I can not see why the likes of Durgal would agree with what "Student" painted here! I really can not see the rationale behind you "Durgal" being accordant to what he said about me. Will you please care to elaborate it.

Drwhooo, Sohpist;

I am sure you guys can defend or avert from his wanton allegations.

Tantalising yet tedious topic.

I have to say that Mahir put forward an idea that is worthwhile looking at it and researching it fully. I think even if he is the three people you claimed Mr student him to be then be that as it may; thougth i find that to be not the case becuase you can see the way they write, may be shopist and drwho are educated in same school but mahir has a gleeming character, and we should not waste that sort of effort from a brother who thinks about the welfare of his community.

Where is the Soceity Sir?, I have heard it was full of snobs " the excutives, there was a guy who was studying politics who behaved like Askari telling people what to do, and the another one who didn't allow the others to answer the questions and the rest were fellowing what these these two creatures said", anyhow, that ambition of theirs as i srongly believe short-lived.

Mahir I supported student's argument just in its organizational context and not what he claims about you. It is a general problem that exists every University, why can't we form a viable organization? I was directly answering to that question something which any new organization should be aware of. Besides, it is my inherent
interest to see every Somali organization succeed, including yours. That is what I meant when I siad he has a point.

As usual we got into arguments, i don't know Drwho if its in our haemoglobin.

We despretly need an association which brings together somali students, who share common goals and common problems.

I think the ppl who wre involved in the original organisation need to step forward and do one of two things: either the give the cause they originally set up or continue with it and make an effort to bring the organisation back to life.

DrWho, what happened i though you were one of the organisers.

Lets stop arguing and start doing '' actions speak louder than words''

This says so much for Somali ppl, is not like we are inventing a new concept that has never been tried before, its an organisations and millions of student organisations exist ( even a Bengali one)

So common ppl, lets get of the high horse, and set a date , venue and time for a general meeting.

People in this forums who need to be there as organisers include Mahir, Durgaal, DrWho and Amina.

why is so hard for those of us who want to achieve something to just get together and look at the proposal that mehir has or for that matter any other person might have and go through it constructively without out-right criticism.

Volume 1, Book 3, Number 100:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al' As:

I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "Allah does not take away the knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) the people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray."
Sound like somalians

Guys if you want to have a successful organization you must move toward the message and away from a man, after all it is a cummunity adventure not personal quest. If all those who responded to Mahir's massege start looking things from this perspective, the central massege being the most important thing, then task would be whole lot easier. For example Imagine a new organization is being set up and it claims that it will work for the interest of Somali student in Uk. It lists several key responsibilities, such us informing high school students college requirement, tutoring them, setting up Web site where students with different backgrounds list their interests, field, email address so that a high school senior can look up this web site and directly gather information from six or seven different college students, In short, whatever responsibilty that organization claims to do must be its evaluation cretiria. If it fials to do what it promised, it must be replaced with new elected members. Make the election period shorter, six months instead of a year, it is difficult to put up with a looser in whole year. Believe me we have one in our University.

One of the benefits of doing this is that individuals will become irrelevent, only the central massege and its fruits will become the basic foundation of the organization. You don't have time to fullfill your duties, we'll say to you do not assume it in the first place. Another indirect benefit of this is that you will bring together some of the honest, highly motivated, most intelligent somalis together who then can move from such a betty organization to much more important adventures, such as shaping the future of Somalia.

Even though we have different veiws on how to achieve a successful organization we must remeber onething, we are all genuine in our concerns. How then can we overcome such differences? First, it is my view that these differences are based on: a, past expereinces from somali organizations and the need to avoid simmilar fate, b, our personal veiw getting in the way instead of focusing the big picture. In the first case I have already highlighted how we can avoid that, and let me add that personal development is the key to success. You get to have the ability to take a bunch for your organization's sake, so that you can separate those who have alterior motives and those who are honest but confused. In the second case, all those who want this organization to succeed must learn how to refrain from divisive comments that would bid one student against another. In short, we should all be concerned about the result of our comments regardless of whether are right or wrong. What will they contribute? Success or failture, you choose.

Mishebel and London Medic I attend one of the Big Ten universities in the States. I wish you all the luck for whatever comes out of this organization. I advise you, though, that you take a greater interest in founding and contributing the success of your UK organization. Do you take a bride in being where you are compared to five years ago, then you can do the same by being the fore-front, work with whoever serves for the student's interest. If you need my help do not hesitate.

Most ppl talk about how good idea it is to have Somali Student Union, but we need to move on to another stage, maybe organise a meeting on the easter hollidays and give everybody the opportunity to contribute on this.

I would also like see, the bros/sisters who started the existing organisation to come and share their expriences with us.
Many of us haven't heard such organisation existed, therefore i don't think they have done a good job, although they deserve some credit for atleast trying.
