There are always limitation how much you can learn a foreign language. The polish teacher who was studying the Somali language many years in Somalia experienced when he claimed that he mastered the Somali language. He was asked to explain the simple word "Cagta waxkadey" and he only came up one of three meaning of this word. It is also true more deeply you know your own language the better you learn other languages.
However good knowledge of your native language is important many reasons.
Language is a part of communication, like infrastructure (roads, ports an railways). A common language is very important the development of a country. The developed countries have only one thing in common which is they only speak one language. Japan is one example.
One of Africa’s biggest problems is the lack of one national language. We are so lucky that we are the only country in Africa where all people speak one language. The fact that we have one language many development experts saw and still sees Somalia a potential country. Two African scientists from same country communicate foreign language. The question is if these two scientists communicate foreign language how can they reach the masses who speak many different languages. It was attempt for Somali languages to modernize and many technical terminologies from foreign language were translated to Somali. However last ten years the Somali language was losing ground. Knowing another language is advantage but if your mother language is not one of them you get a problem. The fact is a white man from Russia who do not speak English knows better the English culture than many African who lives there many years. A research shows that the Russian students score better the TOWFEL test than the African who only speak English.
Somebody may ask why I am not writing Somali myself. I finished my high school in Somalia and spent lot of time the countryside. For that reason I feel comfortable my Somali knowledge. By the way that is not the only high school I graduated.
I feel sorry these Somali who cannot read a textbook with lot of terminology written either Somali or any other language. Do not feel proud of your knowledge of foreign language when you even do not have a basic knowledge of your native language. We always are refugee in outside our country but it will be tragedy to be refugee in our country.

Yes, there are different way of speaking somali.

Afsoomaaligu marka laqorayo isma raacaan sadex shaqal oo isku xiga "werky" waxaa uqorantaa werkey. taasoo dadka qaar ugudhawaaqaan "warkay ama warkayga". Waxaad moodaa dadka qaar iney khalad kafahmeen qoraakaygii oo muhiimada aan kalahaa ahayd inaan dhalinyarada beejkan soo booqata usoo bandhigo dhibaatada ay leedahay adoo soomaaliya inaad afsoomaali barashadiisa aad daneyn.

Ahmad......i agree with ya bro.....we r a lost nation if we lose our language......look at African Americans.....first thing white pple did to them was change thier names and seperate them so they dont speak thier language....and with time they 4got it all......like they neva had thier own language...!!! It would be really messed up if we Somalis did the same.....!!
I've never been to somalia.....i was born in the middle east......my dad never allowed us to speak in arabic at home......my brothers were wipped if they spoke arabic at home.....thats why we all speak somali like we just came from somalia....!! Somali is the easiest language to write too...but its a bit hard to read it....!! I feel so sorry for those somalis who say i cant speak somali.....but then i dont blame them but i blame thier parents.......i cant expect my kids to speak somali if i dont talk to them in somali or teach them how to read it and write it.....!! Parents that speak English to thier kids just piss me off walaahi......but what can i say.....i aint neva raisin' my kids in north america..!!Insha allah of course...!!

U said we got one language in Somalia......what about Barawi pple.........i go to school with barawi pple and they dont speak somali together.....but they speak somali with us...!!

Salaam

Laakiin hadaan adiga aqrikari ama aadan qori karin, sidey ilmahaada noqonaayaan??. Masa ogodiin miyaa, hadaadan aqri karin, ama qori karin in ay luuqdaada lumeyso, sanadba sanadkii ka dambeeya..

Soomaali maanta waxa aan haysano waa luuqadeena iyo diintee oo dadkeena itiisa badan ka wa simanyihiin... So in aan ilaalino ma aha??
