     | Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 03:55 am I was born into a Somali family in a foreign country. I am a member of the ever growing populations of foreign born Somalis. I am accused of not being "Somali" particularly by my Somali Somali relatives. I like certain aspects of Somali culture but not others. I have adopted some certain foreign cultural practices and mannerisms. What I can't figure out is What Makes a person Somali besides having Somali blood ? Konan

You are what ur parents are, period! A little advice, for a start- start mingling with the Somalis like you are one of them and stopping putting on airs with your" I was born in a foreign country" attitude. I am sure that would do wonders.

I know some somalis that are mixed , but everyone believes they are from somalia and also they believe that themselves. But the thing is the ones that their fathers are from somali are considered to be somalis. the offspring of the women are not considered somalis, at least the ones I have seen. So i raise another q. Is the mixed offspring of a somali women, considered somalis?

I feel i am somali 300% walaahi.......i have the culture, the look, the language, the every little thing that defines bein' a somali...true i have not seen the land....but how important is it when i feel like i belong no where else but to Somalia...!! Yes we do have some stupid thingz in our culture......but look at other cultures...can u say that culture is perfect...can u say that culture fits me more than the somali culture......naaaah...even if u say yes.....chances r that the culture u r trying to adapt is not gonna recognize u as a pure follower...!! U know what i mean right...!! So be proud of ur Somali culture....it is the best identification that fits us...!!!! You don't have to be born in somalia to be somali. the ancient ritual of becoming somali involves 1. drinking caano garoor, eating bur, consuming goat meat 2. making sure you maintain a weight of 120 or less 3. have your macawuus/diric handy at all times 4. make sure the smell of uunsi surrounds you at all times. 5. treat all other africans, including ethiopians, like dirt-although they might even be richer than you. 6.and if you're really desperate to obtain your somali identity-smoke jat. 7. visit your local zoo to get closer to the camels. 8. qabil qabi qabil 9. sing along with your maryan mursal tapes-when done, rewind and listen again. 10. and when in daubt-smoke jat.

When I am walking on the street everybody around me would automatically know dat I am from somalia.... We have unique look but some times ppl will confused the difference Ethoipians and us. But hey we can tell the difference who cares others.. 2 more thing the language and been muslim is something dat we are definitely different from other.. I hope dat help your Q?

| | Thursday, April 12, 2001 - 03:03 pm i assume you are a male. so let me list what makes a man a somali: be very proud,almost vain of your identity be proud of being a muslim respect women. for men it's a shame (ceeb) to insult women, or even argue. the somali man respects women in general, and somali women in particular regardless what they say or do to you. you have to have the "waxkasta waan daadshay" attitude. lastly , let me repeat and reiterate of the most important point-never insult or say anything about women. the strong and the brave charecter of the somali man will otherwise be lost.

I took a special liberty in trying to be inquisitive about our culture. As a little girl I loved reading the Somali Newspapers, and boy did I ask a lot of questions. I would stop my mother in the middle of the afternoon and ask her to translate a whole song for me. I would ask my dad on my way to school what a certain word meant. And as the first born in my family I relied on my own instincts. My friends still taunt me of not being enough SOMALI but who cares............If I talk in Somali, Dress like a moslem girl, act like a Somali.....Guess what..I AM A SOMALI 100% and noone has the guts to imply otherwise.
