Unrecorded Date 93.1 CKCU Radio Ottawa, Ontario Press Release October 18, 1999 Peace and Conflict - two faces of Somalia Wednesday October 20th, 1pm to 4 pm 93.1 FM CKCU Radio in Ottawa is proud to present a special three hour examination of the peace process in Somalia. This program is produced and presented by the members of the radio program "Voice of Somalia" which is heard weekly on CKCU. This program, Peace and Conflict - two faces of Somalia, looks at last Month's report by UN secretary general Kofi Annan to the UN Security Council on the situation in Somalia. The report urges the International Community to take a action to broker a peace in Somalia, and in particular to take measures to take control from the "Warlords" or clans that control much of Somalia. In the eleven years since the outbreak of war in Somalia, all governmental authority has broken down. Last month a number of proposals were presented by the United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) to restore government, and to build up the forces of a civil society. As well as proposing a restriction on arms sales from neighbouring countries, and encouraging links between Somaliland in the north and Puntland in the South, the group discussed the introduction of a peace dividend. Somalia and The Media. Somali media is quite limited. The Somali language was an exclusively oral one prior to the introduction of written script in the last few decades. Somali communities in Africa and abroad have adopted radio as an effective way of sharing news. Although there is local Radio in Somalia, these stations are owned by warlords and they broadcast their agenda. Many people rely instead on a daily one hour programs from BBC Somali service. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/somali/index.shtml) How can this radio program can help peace in Somalia? As well as being broadcast in Ottawa on 93.1 FM, this program will be available on the Internet in RealAudio. It is planned that it will also be broadcast on shortwave, allowing listeners in Somalia to tune in as well. It is hoped that Somali communities in both Africa and North America will take this opportunity to discuss these proposals and support the peace initiative. The program will be broadcast in Somali.
