One of the casualties of the destruction of somali Nation State was the impact on our culture as a people. This impact is endagering the existance of the values that define us as a people. There is a feeling of disorientation, if not alienation especially among the young somalis who grew up outside Somalia.

There are young Somali couples who grew up in the diaspora and are now having children who are second generation Somalis. The problem is in every generation there are some things that are lost. This lose of values leads to cultural erosion.

For example, my young niece asked me a very simple question,, Are there any somali Heroes??? ???? He ment historical figures.

For someone who left Somalia ages ago and grew up outside somalia, I could hardly answer his question. And I think there are many young cyber age somalis who would identify with my situation.

The question is where do we go to get this resources ?? Who are the real Heroes, Heroins??

The Somali Historical figures, the Sons and daughters of Somalia. Lets try to be realistic and lets not our romantacise history. Tell it like it is !!

Somali Heroes/Heroine

Who are they ?
what did they accomplish ?
What generation ?

GenerationX, I have asked that questions before (not in cyberspace) and still I have no answer.
I am not a GenrationXer and my extended family has been lving outiside Somlia since the early 70s. We have third genration children in elementary schools asking the same questions.

Traditionally, we somalis tend to admire violent men as heroes. I don't understand the logic of it.
Also, men who are known for their poetry are seen as heroes. One who combined both and who is seen as an hero is Sayid Mahamed Abdille Hassan, he was a poet, a patriot who fought with the British and a murdureous despot who killed many innocent Somalis.
Ahmed Gurey, is another hero, he fought with the Ethiopians.
You know based on your definitions of a hero, you can help the youngsters of your family identify heroes.
To me a hero nowadays is someone who is honest, principled, judicious, peaceloving, hardworking and ambitous.
Good luck with your search and let me know if you discover any new heroes.

The one Somali hero that is a historical figure is Mohammed Abdille Hassan, the British nick named him the "Mad Mullah". He led the war of Resistance and fought against the British and Ethiopians armies. The war of resistance lasted for twenty one years and became one of the bloodiest conflicts against colonialism in Africa.

i think the information regarding the somali heroes is abundant and available on history books available at your average american/european library or the major bookstores and even some web sites like the socio-culture ones can give hints and its on the net too..SO, please...look up the basic info..besides, most of us have a hero figure, well at least i do...my grandfather is....he is/was/will be the most generous human being i know...50 years ago he was a member of the independence fighters,,,,in the future, i might even get a chance to write a brief autobiography,,,anyway,, it is very important to have your general hero and a hero that...cont.
