He then tells the subcontractor that the contract was for $25,000 dollars. He goes back to UNOSOM and says that the original estimate was low and successfuly renegotiates the contract for an additional $2,750. How much profit does Musa Sudi make and what is the differential between what he promised the subcontractor and what he's actually paying him? We made this thing up when I was in Mog in November 93. The local Somalis loved it - thought it was hilarious. Maybe you had to be there though.

That having been said once we committed to Somalia we never should have quit - my compatriots and myself were willing to stay and finish the job. There's nothing special about Somali sand, so please let that ridiculous notion go. We did not mine any uranium at Bur'hakaba although I heard the Libyans have since we left. I don't know if the rumor on Libya is true or not. I heard it was a deal between the SNA and the Libyans in exchange for Libyan support to the SNA (uniforms, ammunition). I can assure you we did not mine or export uranium to the US when we were there. 2. You did not come close to defeating us militarily. I''m sure you realize this. You defeated us politically - which ain't hard to do. Like I said before, I am not proud of the fact my country quit before the job was finished, I didn't get a vote on the matter. Also, the conflict between the Italians and The Americans had nothing to do with competing resources and everything to do with the fact that the Italians were passing information to and running guns to the SNA. 3. For the record, I do not want to install anything in Somalia. I want to try and help facillitate the process whereby the Somalis establish their own government. All white people are not evil who are trying to rip Somalia off, although based on Somali history it's easy to see how one could conclude that. 4. Somalia has to have some form of government that can insure basic services and negotiate with other countries. How much government Somalis want is up to them - I suspect it's not much since they haven't had any more luck with governments than with European intervention. 5. You guys are the one who continue to bring up my background. I only mentioned it so there's no subsequent accusation of deception. It's not as though I don't listen to other peoples opinions or consider them of no value. The start of this was JUST A JOKE. You guys take everything more seriously than a heart attack. | | Unrecorded Date mad mac When i was in hudur the army was a major employer cause the town was close to the ethopian border.ppl there r very nice to others everybody knew each 1.great town population in 85 was around close to 160.000.great place, damn i miss the old days.hopefull i go back and visit next summer. Hudur is more like galgacyo in contrest.But around the suburbs were a alot of farms and livestock.

Galcaio's kind of a dusty backwater, not my kind of place. Does Oddur have maybe a little more charm or is it classic Desert Outpost - like Tombstone Arizona.

They will never do that and will stick with the west they hate so much, needless to explain why. Virtually all western governement has allocated thousands of dollars to any Somali who want to go back. The result; they found no one. So i'm afraid your "team" will be very few, however persistent´you are with "wanna go back?". Finally, i guess you would ask me what's my solution. I think that the Somali diaspora can HELP Somalia not "FIX" it. No diaspora has ever fixed their country of origin, apart from the jews which are a special case, because of the Holocaust and they didn't have enough people to do much in Israel in the begining. It's only Somalis back home who can fix the country, however distant may that prospect seem today to many of us, And we can't even HELP if we aren't an established communities in our adopted countries.

In fact, just a couple of months ago I got an E-Mail from COL David (he was the commander of the soldiers that rescued the Rangers - check it out in Black Hawk down by Mark Bowden). I've known him since Somalia and his first question to me was "Are You Nuts?" Acutally, I like to thinki that I see things with a clarity that most people lack. So maybe I am nuts. I met wonderful, friendly Somalis in somalia, along with a bunch who were trying to blow my head off. Then I met a bunch in Virginia and we had dinner together and it was cool. Then I met a bunch in Germany and lived with one - a boat load of Haber Gedir, it was unbelievable. And they all hated me at first, but I grew on them and we argued politics and by the time I left we were on very friendly terms. Man they can cook great food. I did not say that the soldier who was dragged through the streets deserved it. What I said was that I understood the anger that drove those people. I'll be honest in 93 if MAD MAC had been in charge we'd have been doin' some serious killing. But I learned from that and now know you have to think with your head and not with your emotions. I don't need or want a big "team." A small number of quality folks is just right. Quality is the key. Reliable people who are willing to take a risk to TRY and do the right thing. You are absolutely right on the last point. Only the Somalis can "Fix" Somalia. I'm not fool anough to think I can do it. I want to try and facillitate the process and once it takes hold get the hell out of the way and go home.
